Thanks all for the bottle help.  I was afraid it was going to boil down to practice.  At least my swerve sizes went way down this weekend to the point where I no longer thought I would get pulled over for operating under the influence.

Congrats on the race Lisa!  That milky white fluid is pure magic when they inject it, just be careful because I sometimes overdue things when I get a cortisone shot and end up hurting the area even more.

Dee - might I be so bold as to suggest that you get a book, a manual or something else with a particular style of running (P.O.S.E., Chi-running, etc) and then you can follow their format?  In the end, I think they all try to accomplish the same thing.  Personally, I'm still slowly slogging my way through chi-running but it has helpful drills as well as some framework for me to follow during my "style transition" rather than trying to cobble together everyone's suggestions (though I still use those in conjunction now).  Just a thought since having such a book to refer to with drills and illustrations did make my life much easier.

Bleh - performance review today at work and I am not looking forward to it.  Hopefully my boss will be in a good mood and my co-worker who gets hers before me won't aggravate him like she usually does.

losta - 2009-06-28 1:19 PM I did a 5K race this morning as part of my triathlon training. It's been about 29 years since I did an event. It was fun and I finished a little faster than I thought (still slow and way slower than I used to run) but I'm happy to have done it. My knee was ok since I had a cortisone shot in it on Wednesday. In 3 weeks I have an OWS coming up and 5 weeks until my first tri.

Great job!!!  you were really close to where i live!!!  next time in Fairfield, go to Archie Moores for wings and beers...best in the area!!!

Thanks for the suggestions!

I picked up Chi Running last week, actually!

The bookstore didn't have POSE, but eventually, I might order it through Amazon. (Not yet though. It would be after I work my way through Chi running.)

I'm still trying to figure out how to land under my body, but still move foward....

Good luck with the performance review. I'm sure you'll do fine!

There were no surprises in my review so I'm happy.  My boss even made me laugh when I said "Well, I'm not happy being average but it gives me some room for improvement." and he replied "You're not average, you're just meeting my expectations.  There's a difference."

Dee, that's great that you picked up the book.  The leaning forward aspect really helped me with the whole "trying to go somewhere but only landing under yourself".  My first run I felt like snails were warping past me but things have steadily gotten faster as I have gotten more and more used to it.

Yay for "no surprises" in your review! Sounds like your boss feels you're doing a good job.

So, if I lean forward while landing under myself, this is how I'll go forward? Because right now, I feel pretty much like I'm standing still. LOL

OK, I'll keep working on it. I have to get the lean from the ankles better. Right now, I think I'm bending at the hips still.

I hear you on the snails. One was laughing at me as it ran past me last night.

Hi Everyone!

My first race on Sunday went really well!  I made it in in under 2 hours and didn't finish last (which were my 2 goals).  My overall time was 1:54:52 and for the overall women I was 134 out of 153.  I checked out the overall mens standings too and it looks like I beat 10 of them also!   The ocean was pretty rough and choppy Sunday morning so I was pleased with how I did considering the conditions.  I was able to run pretty much the whole time on both of my runs (minus when I had to stretch out my calf after the bike during the beginning of the 2nd run because I got a cramp, but it went away and all was good)  I'm going to post a race report on my personal page so I'll let you guys know once I've done that in case you're interested.  Here are my split times/rankings for each leg of the race.  Looks like I need to work on my biking leg (a new bike wouldn't hurt either!).   The ranking is the overall ranking out of 153 women.  They ranked the men and women separately.  I'm guessing this is what they normally do.

Swim 1 (375 meters):  11:24 -- Rank 73

Run 1 (1.5 miles):  18:27 – Rank 133

Bike (12 miles):  54:31 – Rank 148

Run 2 (1.5 miles):  16:36 – Rank 104

Swim 2 (375 meters):  13:56—Rank 75

Final -- 1:54:52

Get better soon Cat!

My training is going alright. I think I'm on schedule.
I am working on getting back to my pre vacation training levels.
I kept active during my vacation, even lost a bit of weight (on a cruise?) but came back with little head cold and took a few days off early last week but am pretty much back in the swing of things now.
I am looking forward to July's TdF Challenge to work on my cycling and get in some longer rides (long for me).
My first sprint tri is one month from today!
I think my nutrition program is working for me, a few people have noticed that I lost weight. I have a long way to go but I'm working hard to get there, goal is approx. 1 year away.

How is your training going?
OK. I did a lot of running this past month, due to the June Run Challenge. AND my knees are holding up OK.

How is your eating going?
OK. I'm addicted to Pepperidge Farm Milano Double Chocolate cookies. But other than that, OK.

What goals are you still working towards?
1) Running: Continue working on the running. I'm in the process of reading Chi Running, so I plan on working on those drills.
2) Biking: The TdF challenge starts in a few days. (And I *heart* the TdF so I'll be glued to the TV set, although probably not as much as Cat will be!) So I'll be working on my biking next month.
3) Swimming: Still don't have a place to swim right now. So maybe not much of this....

What else is going on in your life?
Ah the million dollar question! I had a job interview yesterday. It went well.... Now, I'm trying to determine if I'd be happy working there. It would also mean relocating, so I'm in the process of trying to determine what the area is like. (I'd only be about 40 minutes from IronPam though, so I'd make her give me some swim lessons. Uh, not that I've told her this yet. LOL)

- How is your training going?

Pretty well.  Biking is coming right along.  Still loving my new bike and especially the new saddle!  I'm signed up for the TdF challenge, so I'll have a little more motivation to get my miles in.  I've started running more, so I'm hoping my pace will get better...I don't think it can get any worse.  Swimming is a no brainer for me.

- How is your eating going?

Eating isn't near as bad as the weight increases lately would indicate.  Not sure what's going on there.  I try to make a good choice each time I eat whether it be to eat less or choose something healthier or whatever.

- What goals are you still working towards?

My only tri this year is the 1st week of Oct., so I have no excuses for not being ready.  It has a really huge hill that most people had to walk up last year.  I've gotten much better on hills and tackeled some pretty big ones around here, so I shouldn't have to walk it this year.

- What else is going on in your life?

Just living life and being thankful for what I blessed with.  So very happy to have a 3 day weekend starting in 4 hours  The hubby is going out of town for a month starting next week, so that's going to suck.  The kiddo and I will be holding down the fort.

Hi Patch - sounds to me like the bike might need to be set up in a less aggressive position... when I was first working on riding I would get shoulder/neck issues etc and it was from needing my handlebars rotated upwards for a little while so I could gradually work my way in to a more agressive riding position...

I slowly moved them back down as I adapted... but if you go to too much of an aggressive position before your body is ready then yuo can get all sorts of discomfort.

As for the contact point with the saddle... that could either be position... or you need a different saddle

Hmmm thanks...imma try to see if i can move the saddle back a little more and give it more of an angle and hopefully that fixes it. Im not really sure how to move the handlebars though?

If you loosen the handle bars you can rotate them upwards which might help...

And sometimes when yuo THINK you need to put your seat back you actually need to raise it... is there anyone you an get to run an eye over your position... its really important to get someone to look at your set up while you are ON it... otherwise you are just making guesses..,.

Ok - so we are all a bit quiet at the moment.. when you check in give us an update!

I want to know:

- How is your training going?

My training has gone okay, for the most part.  I wish that I had been more diligent about doing the core exercises.  I seem to be able to do most of the time that the plan calls for me to do in each of the disciplines (swim, bike, run), even if the mileage comes up a bit short.

One of my big fears was getting injured, so I am happy that I haven’t managed to give myself a major injury yet (knock on wood!).

- How is your eating going?

I am a bit disappointed in my eating habits lately.  Between birthday parties at home (June was a huge birthday month), exiting/new people parties at work and luncheon appointments, I have really gotten away from the good eating habits that I was trying to cultivate.  I said it before but I really have to get back to tracking my food using weightwatchers.com.  Seeing the numbers pops up gives me some sort of context for how much I am eating.

- What goals are you still working towards?

I’m still working towards completing my first sprint tri.  I’m still working on my self-confidence and going from a head case to HTFU’er.  I’m also still working on my conditioning so I can begin exceeding the sprint tri biking and running distances in my training.

- What else is going on in your life?

Work has been a bit busy with the end of the fiscal year and I am readying my ark since it has been raining so much over the past month.  Other than that, it’s just the usual day to day drudgery.

- How is your training going?

training is going well, i had my longest time and distance bike month ever, topping 300 miles in a month for the first time!!!

Running is still a chore, and i had developed a bit of Planter Faciitis for a few days, i have seemed to correct it and had my first run in two weeks this morning.

swimming was a bit down this past month as a had been kinda busy in Life...more on that later, but i have been swimming regularly this past week and half, all open water now that the ocean is warm enough and will ramp up distance and time greatlt in July with training a sprint Tri and my very first Olympic Distance!!!

- How is your eating going?

i am on a see food diet...i see food and i eat it!!!  My weight has gotten as low as 227 in the past week!!!  and bounces vetween 227 and 235 depending on how much food i am consuming. Now that i can run again, it should be closer to my primary goal of 225 which would be "fat guy...no longer"....  my secondary goal is 210, where i think i can be a competitive racer, especially in Clydesdale.

- What goals are you still working towards?

i signed up for my first Half Iron in October, so that will be my primary goal after the OLY in NY

- What else is going on in your life?

BIG CONGRATULATIONS!!!  You must be so excited!  From everything I've heard from pregnant friends, family and colleagues, you timed it nearly perfectly for her comfort (temperaturely speaking).
