Please take this advice with a HUGE grain of salt since I'm still very new to all of this, but it sounds very reasonable to me as long as you're still running at least 3 times per week. Even Hal's "intermediate" plan starts with a "long" run of 5 miles in week one. I'm currently using this plan and my long run to date is nowhere near 8 miles. i TOTALLY VALUE your opinion TOM! so thanks so much for the feedback. my thought process was 'similiar' i came into the 1/2 MARY training (Hals of course) at week 3-4. the long run was 6 miles... i want to be able 'pick up' where i left off, w just a little 'advantage' heading into my 1/2 come MAY. this way, ill only need to build in 4-5 weeks in prep for my Half this go round. stacieb Sounds smart to me. Will it be the same course in May that you did a couple weeks ago? How hilly is the Burgh anyway? I imagine the scenery is very nice around there, but I don't know anything about the terrain except for the 3 rivers. it wont be the same course, DAGNABIT, but pretty similiar...from all accounts flatter than the course i just ran, as if THAT was possible. i thought the Spirit course was pretty darn flat...course, what i trained (and will continue to train on) was MUCH hillier. on the Spirit course, the hills were the grades going up and on to the bridges. there were 3 bridges in the Spirit course...i think there are at least 2 on the PGH 1/2 course. as for the terrain, generally, it is VERY hilly everwhere except downtown/down by the rivers...and these races were/are run close to downtown, so you have the advantage of the 'flats' next to the rivers (yes, all three of them) but generally speaking, runners/triathletes from here, always say that pretty much anywhere else they go to race its MUCH EASIER because what we train on day to day is soooo DANG hilly. [not that there arent areas, a lot hillier, but....] i know my friends from uber flat OHIO were whining that the Spirit course was HILLY. i just laughed at them. ![]() stacieb Sounds like you'll definitely be ready to rock it then! I also have that advantage in that the area around my house is much hillier than the course I'll be running in January. However, if I'm able to do the HM I want to do in April (La Jolla) I will need to step it up even more. There's a brutal hill from mile 5-7 they call "heart-attack hill." The finish is downhill towards the beach though. I just hope I'm able to figure out soon if my work schedule will allow me to do it. |

I just hope I'm able to figure out soon if my work schedule will allow me to do it. you know any hill that they attach HEART ATTACK TO is gonna be KILLER! ![]() at least the race directors were 'nice enough' to give you a reprive/downhill to the beach.... they have this bike race called the DIRTY DOZEN here in PGH, and they selected the WORST most BRUTAL climbs in PGH, 13 of them, and they go from one hill to the next to the next to the next. and i think. what PYSCHO came up w THAT race?? ![]() but at least you know when you finish your race, which NODOUBT YOU WILL (fingers crossed your schedule allows you to), that you've conquered the course and proved yourself to be UBER CAPABLE AND STRONG. WOOT! [now me. im big ol WOOSY when it comes to hills. the flatter the course the better. lol.] stacieb Edited by skrtrnr 2009-11-11 6:18 PM |

I put the sneaks on and went out for a jog/walk. Went a little over 5 miles and no probs with the knee!!! The HM is still unlikely (unless I decide to walk alot, which isn't out of the question as I have friends flying in to do it with me) but I signed up for the Ft. Lauderdale HM in February as a motivator. Planning to make it a long beach weekend with friends who live there. Jersey is horrid in February. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() skrtrnr - 2009-11-11 3:24 PM QUESTION GHOULIES. I think 8 seems pretty sensible. Its a good middle ground so you are ready to hit your next half training plan and not too long to where you are really burning yourself out. I was going to try 8-10 as my "maintenance" long run over the winter myself. If I can get over this hip thing that's the plan. Although this would be the first time I haven't had to start my running over from scratch after the off season so I can't tell you how well the plan will work. |

See you Ghoulies in a bit! RUN TOM RUN! stacieb OK, I'm back. That was a tough run. Not sure why, but I just didn't feel like I had much in the tank. Still, I think I did an OK job of "tempo-ing" it and even though the hill at mile 3 REALLY slowed me down I pushed as hard as I could through it and still had enough for a hard 1/2 mile downhill push on the home stretch. I think what really did me in was that it's a lot more humid here today than usual so I was a bit overheated. I even had to take off the t-shirt and expose my poor neighbors to my distinctly Scandinavian torso complection. Hopefully noone got too blinded. Fortunately I was able to cool down fairly quickly once I got my hands on some water thanks to our discussions from last month ![]() I definitely thought of you guys when I was pushing up that hill though, between all of your nagging injuries, ailing familyies, crappy weather, and all the other obstacles faced by the Ghoulie nation. Talking to you guys makes me very thankful for the good things I'm able to experience every day. Thanks a million Ghoulies... Ooh, dealing with humidity is never fun. I've had some real doozies in the summer where I had to pretty much crawl home because I had nothing left. Way to push through and get the mileage in! |
