kcarroll - 2009-11-11 6:29 PM BTW, I also signed up for the lottery for the 2010 NYC marathon.  Keep toes and fingers crossed!

Very cool!  I hope you get in.  That one is definitely on the to-do list.

RUN TOM RUN!

OK, I'm back. That was a tough run. Not sure why, but I just didn't feel like I had much in the tank. Still, I think I did an OK job of "tempo-ing" it and even though the hill at mile 3 REALLY slowed me down I pushed as hard as I could through it and still had enough for a hard 1/2 mile downhill push on the home stretch.

I think what really did me in was that it's a lot more humid here today than usual so I was a bit overheated. I even had to take off the t-shirt and expose my poor neighbors to my distinctly Scandinavian torso complection. Hopefully noone got too blinded. Fortunately I was able to cool down fairly quickly once I got my hands on some water thanks to our discussions from last month

I definitely thought of you guys when I was pushing up that hill though, between all of your nagging injuries, ailing familyies, crappy weather, and all the other obstacles faced by the Ghoulie nation. Talking to you guys makes me very thankful for the good things I'm able to experience every day. Thanks a million Ghoulies...

Ooh, dealing with humidity is never fun.  I've had some real doozies in the summer where I had to pretty much crawl home because I had nothing left.  Way to push through and get the mileage in!

Thanks Neal! The humidity here definitely wasn't midwest-in-the-summer bad, but bad enough considering how spoiled I usually am around here. I figure it's good for me

kcarroll - 2009-11-11 4:28 PM Hi Ghoulies!  Went off-line this afternoon.  I didn't have any meetings on my calendar, so I left the office and went MIA.  I put the sneaks on and went out for a jog/walk.  Went a little over 5 miles and no probs with the knee!!!  The HM is still unlikely (unless I decide to walk alot, which isn't out of the question as I have friends flying in to do it with me) but I signed up for the Ft. Lauderdale HM in February as a motivator.  Planning to make it a long beach weekend with friends who live there.  Jersey is horrid in February.

Sounds like a great afternoon Kim! I hope you're healing well - the Feb trip to Florida has to be a good motivator! All the best!

Thanks, Tom.  You are so lucky to live in the SD area!!  I could use a motivator for March.  Any good races that come to mind?

Races around here? Let's see...

-Mar 6 - Scavenger Dash San Diego: "Urban Adventure Race" in downtown San Diego. You have to sign up in teams of 2. Looks pretty fun.

-Mar 7 - Union Tribune Race for Literacy 8k: I ran this one last year. It's a really nice course from Balboa Park into downtown. It finished at a park and had some seriously good schwag for a 5 mile race. The free breadsticks from Pat and Oscars come to mind...

-Mar 7 - Desert International and Sprint Triathlons in La Quinta, CA: It's a ways from the SD area, but I've heard a lot of good things about this race.

-Mar 7 - UCLA IronBruin Triathlon: Sprint course on the UCLA campus.

-Mar 14 - XTERRA Black Mountain Trail Run: 5k or 15k or you're feeling frisky enough for the hills I just checked the site (via active.com) and they both finish with a pretty nasty climb.

-Mar 20 - Pasadena Triathlon: Super Sprint (150m swim, 15k bike, 5k run) in Pasadena.

-Mar 27 - IMCA 70.3: It's probably full, but it still sounds fun. Cool course through North San Diego County.

I'm sure there are more, but that should give you some ideas! Are you planning a trip out this way?

Is it archery or rifle - we are still in archery up here until Thanksgiving week.

Archery, the last day is Saturday. Then the Monday after Thanksgiving it is rifle for 2 weeks. I prefer archery, it's quietier, safer IMHO, no bullets flying past your head, and there aren't as many hunters out.

wgraves7582 - 2009-11-12 6:38 AM Well doctors be d&m*ed I went for a bike ride last night.  A long slow bike ride but I did it and I don't care how my ITB reacts.  It was not improving with doing what I was doing and my back always loosens up so nicely after I ride.

So I rolled it out a lot when I got home from swimming and it feels alright.  Going to go again tonight and am planning on a cyclocross race Saturday if all goes well.

I will avoid running until 12/1 but this weather has been way too nice to skip the bike!

Good to hear the ITB agreeing with you.  Hope the new plan works out!

I concur.  I have not hunted since I joined the Navy and up here all we can use is shotguns.  I could head south an hour or so and be in rifle country but I agree with the bullets!

Then again all I have to do is walk out my back door and I could hunt all day long.

Our Youth Pastor got 3 already this year - He had a doe & buck permit and then NYS sent him another doe because they are trying to reduce population.

I used to hunt across the road on my Father In Law's farm. I had 2 treestands, we set up the deer cam in the late summer/early fall to see what was back there. Then last year my nephew heard there were a few nice size bucks that I had been seeing. He called me to be telling me he would be hunting back there and where. My stands weren't easily moved, he had a climber. I told him he'd be 20 yards from me and he said he didn't care. He was also bring his BFF with him to hunt. This pi$$ed me off! This was the only place I could hunt, I couldn't really move my treestands and I had to use a crossbow last year because of arm issues. He lives on 10 acres in the woods, his In-Laws own over 100 acres, and his BFF's family owns 5 different farms. I stopped hunting then. He got an 8 point and my FIL told him he was done hunting back there it was time to give someone else a chance. This fall he asked if he could hunt again and my FIL said he could, and he could bring his friend.

My brother got permission for me to hunt on a farm he hunts but it's about half an hour away. There are lots of deer up there though, we hunt the other side of the hill during rifle. The whole situation just ticks me off. My nephew wouldn't have talked to any of the guys in the family the way he talked to me, and he wouldn't have hunted on top of them.

speaking of running....

heading out in a bit to get in my first long one in since my 1/2 MARY.

i have to admit, and im not quite sure what the word is to describe how im feeling....

DREAD, perhaps....

oh dear.  maybe too strong.

i dont know.

im just not looking forward to running.

im waiting on the sun to heat things up just a bit, but my goal is to have it over and done in time to go have a nice BIG UBER YUMMMY salad at Panera.

i have this weird feeling of foreboding, like im not gonna be 'able to' run?

wtFLIP??

its not like i had some HORRIFIC run at my 1/2 Mary.  so im not sure where this is originating?

no matter.  its not like this will keep from my running.

my guess, once i get started, ill get in the groove, and ill feel OK by the end of it.

im thinking i need to scope out a new route too....wont be taking the time to do that today though.

but, i do have to figure out where i need to go to get in 6-7 miles, i didnt have a loop that distance worked out....

theres a part of me that just wants to say SCREW IT and head up the Y to do the run on the TM.  but i made a commitment to myself to do at least 1 run a week outside, preferrably my long run.  dont want to 'lose' what i gained pounding the pavement for all my long runs trng for the 1/2.  it DEFINATELY made a difference.

and this is the first season (like you NEAL) where i actually HAVE a base to work w.

most of my seasons i was either building from Zero, or building from 3-4 miles.

its cool BUT new to working w a base through the winter.

come SPRING, look out!

QUESTION GHOULIES.

im planning on running the PGH 1/2 IN MAY.

i was wondering, what should i maintain as my long run/base through the winter?

i was thinking 6-8 miles.

does that sound 'reasonable'?

last winter i was (re)building my base after my injury ie starting over from a BIG FAT ZERO so this winter maintenance/base trng is new to me.

stacieb

6-8 is good but you could always go a little longer periodically - throw a 10 miler in there for kicks and giggles - just the next week drop down to 4 or 5 as a recovery type of week.

I tried to keep the habit last winter of having a 10 miler in there every week but I don't remember that being very successful in the end.

I would shoot for 4 days of running and throw some speed stuff in there monthly - you can never be too fast

thanks for this BILL.  the feedback REALLY helps me a TON.....

i was thinking along the same lines, throwing in a longer run from time to time...9-10.

running is 3 days for me, a mid distance rcvry 3-4 miles, a 5-6 miler/speedwork alternating tempo, intervals and hill repeats.  YES I WILL DO HILL REPEATS!  and then my long run  6-8.

in my schedule, every 4th week is a taper week, but w all my times/distances on the 'maintenance' end of the spectrum anyways, this might be unnecessary.

i dunno.

just feeling my way, i guess.
