Cool, glad to know I'm not weird.  I do have some earplugs, but havent worn them yet.

Tim - Make a list and post it. We can make sure you have all the goodies and give you some advice.

Will do, I am going to use triathlon.racechecklist.com, they have quite an extensive list broken up for the different sports.  Looks like they have all the bases covered.

Brick felt good, I don't know if I'm just not riding hard enough or what.  I am expecting the run to just plain suck and that's not what's happening thus far.  Went out a little fast, took a few minutes to settle into an easy pace, but I was happy with it.

I don't really feel to much distress coming from the tri bike to running. However, the MTB is a different story. In my off-road races, I usually have to fight through gluteal tightness for the first mile or so before I can settle into the run. I've come to the conclusion it has to do with positioning on the bike.

As for the swim, lacking equilibrium as you get out of the water is completely normal. As was already said, this has to do with horizontal positioning to vertical positioning. I have a little trick that helps me avoid this to some extent. I'm not a hard kicker when I swim. I pretty much focus on hip rotation with a soft two beat kick. However, as I come into the last 100 yards or so, I will start to flutter kick. This starts to engage the leg muscles and increases circulation to the lower body.

While on the topic, I will try the opposite coming of the bike. As I approach transition, quarter mile or so and if the terrain allows, I will focus on using my hamstrings to pedal and allow my quads to rest. The pedal sensation is like your sliding your feet backwards at the bottom of your pedal circle.

Works for me.... Give it a try if you like and let us know.

to be honest, I'm just looking to get through the swim. I'll try it though if I think about, although I suspect I'll be too nervous and focussed on getting through to remember these things.

I like to go for short 1 mile long runs after MTB'ing so I'm actually more experienced doing bricks off the MTB. However, this early in the year I have yet to do one.

I think the biggest thing worrying me is what to do with my glasses. I'm undecided on whether or not to wear contacts for the MTB. It may be too dusty. But if I don't I'm not sure what I'll do on the swim without any perscription. I'm leaning toward wearing disposable lenses and taking them off after the swim and switching to glasses for the bike run, but I'm afraid to give myself too much to do in T1!

Do they make some sort of racing goggle you could wear during the MTB leg and keep your contacts in?

I don't know.

I've been playing with the idea of getting perscription goggles for the swim though. Infact, that may be my best bet. I'll just keep them on till I get to my station at T1 so I can see!!

I'll look into ear plugs too. I suspect the water in Michigan will be cold anyhow.

I'm over the controversy!

I posted my race report and "unoffical results" on my training blog.

Now, I'm going to workout.  Talk to you guys later.

Looks like $40 I can get perscription swim goggles.

http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/10229.htm

Then I could switch to my glasses for the MTB and prescription sunglasses for the run. That may work best. That way, if I get my goggles kicked off I just get water in my eyes as opposed to my contacts. That may ruin the day if that happened.

Need advice, please:

My posterior tibial tendon hurts. Every time I try to run 10 or more miles a week, I end up limping when I walk. I'm limping right now from last Thursday's run. Consulted with orthopedist doc, and I went Friday to get fit for some custom orthodics and they should be ready today. Also need new running shoes with more support for my over-pronating left foot. (This ticks me off because I went to a running store specifically with the intention of getting the right shoe for me. Turns out the guy sold me the wrong type of shoe.) So this'll all cost around $400.

Anyway, my question is: When should I start running again? Given the fact that my tendon hurts when I walk, shouldn't I lay off for a while, even with the new shoes and orthodics? (I can't tell if there is any swelling - if there is any, it's minimal) Or should I ease back into the run with 1 mile runs...say...3 times a week until my tendon doesn't hurt anymore? Keep in mind that I have a sprint coming-up in 4 weeks?

I don't know what constitutes normal running pain vs. possible really messing myself up pain.

If you're feeling pain and not soreness, I wouldn't run until it feels better. Better you take one week off now than injure it again or injure it worse and miss the tri all together.

Some questions:

How do you know it is posterior tibil tendon???  This is very specific.

What did your Orthopod say abouit it?  If he mentioned it, would listen, he is your bone MD.

Maybe your orthotics will help?

Interesting story about bad marshalling, etc.  IT IS UNIVERSAL!!!

In my last half mary, in Feb (Very cold & snowy), the lead runners were misdirected by marshalls, midway during the race.

1 female & 2 males were ushered  wrong turn & did .5 miles less than the 13.1 mile distance.

The female, who I know did the race in 1:20 ish  & the males near this.  Clearly the winners for a winter race.  They were disqualified & the following 3 "won".

This was not an "A" race & they did not care, they know they are "king of the mountain", nevertheless, it would have bothered me! There were no points for the race & it was just to keep everyone competitive during the cold winter months.

RH

PS.  I only see the female for the 1st 5 seconds of the race & the GONE.  Too bad..nice pace booty, but I will never, ever, ever be that fast!!!Innocent

Both Brian and Richard have offered you sound advice.  I'll had a little:

The initial treatment of posterior tibial tendonitis if focused on resting the tendon to allow for healing. Unfortunately, even normal walking may not adequately allow for the tendon to rest sufficiently. In these cases, the ankle must be immobilized to allow for sufficient rest.

I would lay off the running.  If you're sore, but not experiencing acute pain, then I would walk.  Don't fret over the upcoming race.  Spend your time working on cycling, swimming, transitions, and alternatives to running, such was water running, elliptical work, and-or leg exercises.  Listen to your doctor!

Doc gave a definitive diagnosis - posterior tibial tendonitis. He hasn't given any specific advice on how to train except to lay off running if my leg hurts. Well, it hurts if I get above 10 miles running a week. I certainly hope the orthodics will help. He seems pretty confident that they will. He also told me no more flip flops, and to wear supportive shoes even walking around the house.

I will try water walking. I also have a nice Precor elliptical upstairs, guess I'll use it. Main source of cardio for 8 years and am super burnt out on it, but it's better than nothing.

I will axe the running for a week and just concentrate mostly on the bike, swim, weight training, and transitions. Thanks for the advice, guys.

You might already know this, but if you're concerned about losing those goggles, a little trick is to wear them under the swim cap.  That way they can't be kicked off your face.

Started the day off with a self-inflicted wound.  Headache, nauseous and quite frankly hung-over from shots, beers and margaritas poolside during yesterday’s Mothers Day basher in the VoODoO LoUnGe (my backyard Tiki bar).  No rest for the wicked however so after clearing email and a few meetings… off I went to Encinitas to do this weekend’s race course.

One of my management practices has always been to take a situation to the worse variable and work back from there.  So I set-up strategically in order to have the longest distance transitions in the area and added distance to both the Run & Bike courses.  After setting up my transition I checked in with the Lifeguards who did not want me to swim alone due to the high surf and rip tides.  We compromised that I would only swim the final leg of the swim (about 100 yards) at the swim finish and I unfortunatley did not get a good time on it.  I followed this short swim with T1, the Bike course, T2 and the Run course.

It was pretty tough with a hang-over and all… but as I said “self inflicted wound” so I sucked it up and (only almost puked once).  My training log is updated and here’s what the Garmin said today (note that I inserted last year’s 45-49 AG winners time as a gauge):

What this data tells me is I had better have one hell-of-a swim to be competitive this weekend.  I am strong on the bike but the run will always kill me.  The heavy surf in the OWS coupled with the long distance in soft sand and climb to T1 could be a soul crusher and having played in it this week may give me a little leverage.  The Lifeguards said the Swim Course should be set on Friday morning so maybe Jay and I will have a chance to check it out before race day.  Masters Swim tomorrow followed by a Trail Run at Lake Hodges.

Regarding Ear Plugs… I use one in my breathing ear (no Bi-Lat breathing for me yet) but I only use them to keep my head from filling up with water and sinking.

What's the surf suppose to be like this weekend?  Do you know if the swim will be an out-and-back or parallel to the shore?  Are there any rips you can use to your advantage?

You touched on an important factor in triathlons.  The race is often won in the run, especially in the longer distances.  Just look at how many times Chris Lieto has dominated the bike leg only to be overtaken in the run!

Looking pretty good there!  Are you going sockless?  Also, are you going to take the time to put on the HR monitor?  You have water listed for the bike and run, but are you planning on adding anything like HEED or Gel?

The surf could play havoc on the race. A lot will depend on how the swim course is laid out.  Beside the obvious, the biggest issue is going to be sighting.  You are going to need to find the buoys when you feel yourself rising over the swells.  Landmarks on the horizon are going to be important if available.

If you can, get out there with Mark before the race.

Yep, sockless, and I will put the HR strap and QR strap on in T2, don't trust myself to do it while on the bike.  No, I don't train w/ anything but water for shorter distances like this.  I will take 1 GU before I get off the bike for some extra fuel for the run.  I read last years RRs and the sprint distance swim is just out n back, so I am guessing it will be the same this year and the same for the supersprint also, which I feel better about than swimming parallel to shore and only having to look for 1 buoy to go around.  Yeah, I'm making it a point to hit the water before Sunday.  Speakin of, I guess I need to give him my #...

Swim for Enci is a beach start just south of the Lifeguard Hqs… out past the surfzone to a R turn at buoy 1 parallel to the shoreline northbound (with the current) R turn at buoy 2 back into the surfzone.  The exit is just about parallel to the pathway past the south of the bathrooms.

Surf Forecast today through Tuesday:
     - Water Temp 57 - 60 degrees
     - Surf height 3 to 4 feet with sets to 5 feet
     - Rip current potential is high
     - Very strong currents and dangerous swimming conditions are expected
