Is anyone racing this weekend? I did a stroke and stride last night where the swim was cancelled for lightning. So, just a 5k, but I PRed @ 25:36! So pretty good overall. I did get up and swim this morning too to make it up. Congrats on the PR! |

Champion 6656 | Subject: RE: Mndymond and Disturbed275's Awesome SBR Group--- Phase 2--CLOSED! Moonrocket - 2012-07-18 9:52 AMI have a bit of a dilemma and I'm curious what others would do. My husband has to go to Asia for 2.5 weeks for work and it's during my A race which is an Xterra. We don't have family that lives nearby. I could hire a sitter for the race, but I'm not that comfortable with that idea just in case I get hurt. I think I would be way to distracted during the race. Would you race if you didn't have childcare back up after the race? Should I just choose a different race? I really want to do something since I feel like I've put a lot of work in towards this. Although, I really feel like I've already accomplished so much just doing the training for it and getting into better shape. I would be weary of doing it if you do have concerns over how you will feel post race. I was pretty tired and sore after my first couple of tris (I also wasn't super well trained for them...haha). It's hard to have to pull out of a race you have worked towards. I had to do it a few years ago because my nana was palliative and we went to see her before she passed away. The good thing about the scenario is there is always another race to do. Try to find something. It's sucky that it won't be an xterra since that is what you've been working on, but it will e good to get out and race! |

Kayaked at Lake Tahoe yesterday for three hours straight, thought I would be sore but not! Terribly sun burnt today from floating the Carson River on Saturday...hmm sunscreen on my face, arms and legs, missed the chest...ouch! Off to the pool. My pool time has been awful! Must be the extra weight I gained in the past three weeks, which I lost this week, thank goodness! Feels like I am starting from sratch..., as the song says, "the hardest part of stopping is starting again." |

That being said I have ridden on Hwy 28 N during the day on the weekends before, bu I tend to avoid busy roads with traffic and large trucks going at high speeds. My brother has ridden the Hendey though and didnt really remark on any problems. Probably not a helpful answer to your question! HahaHey Melissa, you ever bike on the anthony henday? Expert 1662 Spokane, WA | Subject: RE: Mndymond and Disturbed275's Awesome SBR Group--- Phase 2--CLOSED! Training question for the guru's and advisors. It's about my run pace at HIM distance. I ran a little over an 8:00 mile in last marathon. I was hoping to hit this pace for HM of HIM after 56 mile bike. If the weather is a non factor (in the 80-90 degree range and not 90-100), is an 8:00 mi/pace realistic? Should I give it 1-2 miles to feel it out on race day at a little slower pace, and if it feels good, then go for it? I plan on trying to reverse split the swim/bike portion, or at worst finish even, so energy levels should be high for the run. I just ran a 6.2 miler with 7:40/mi pace in 90 degrees, with the goal of hitting 8:00/mi pace. It was just to hard to keep the pony's in the stable. |

My first HIM I was only a couple min over my best HM time for the HM split. It really just depends on how you feel your bike fitness is because if you push the bike and your legs are crushed then it doesn't matter how good your run fitness is, you will suffer. Probably a good idea to try and go with a negative split/even split pacing strategy and use the first little bit to get into a running rhythm after the bike and then see how you feel. Nothing worse than the death march coming home because you pushed it too hard off the front! Sounds like your fitness is good though for 8:00/mi pace! Good luck this weekend! Enjoy the taper week! |

So exciting that your first tri is just a couple of days away! I think your run pace goal seems very realistic considering what you've done in the past and how your training has been going. I would definitely plan on taking it easy the first few miles to feel things out. I would almost go as far as to hold back the first half of the run and then crank it up if you feel good. I overcooked the bike on my first couple of HIMs and probably went out too fast on the run. That combo does not make for an enjoyable run. Best bet is to take it easy to start and enjoy the rest of the race, especially for your first. |
