barqhead - 2007-12-08 9:13 PM Good evening Nibbs! Looks like folks got some good workouts in today. Not me, of course, but just had to cheer on those that did!
I did some wimpy stuff. Thought about going swimming, but the shoulder was twinging. So I decided to give it a rest day..... This is highly unusual for me. Generally, I just go first, and think (or suffer) later.

really???? i hadn't noticed that - LOL

good job in listening to your body! If you keep doing that, your shoulder might just get better!

How long does it take for "tendonitis" to get better anyway? (Seems to me that all injuries should heal after 3 days. Well, ok - 4 days for "bad" ones....)

LMAO - yep I couldn't agree more

unfortunatley I think tendonitis can take weeks to heal

from what I've read, anywhere from 4 - 10 weeks (or longer)

I'm still having problems with my hip and I injured it the first week of September. But I was a bad girl and still ran on it for two more weeks. During mile 4 of an oly tri, it let me know enough was enough. And here I am, second week in December, still unable to run. Be careful, Dee. Very, very careful.

Hm. My shoulder started hurting just after the September Challenge. After years of not swimming, I logged 28900 yards that month. It felt really good!....

Until the first week of October, that is....

So your hip is still bothering you? What did the doctor say?

Ha ha ha. See, I'm on an ultra high deductible insurance plan and it's really close to the end of the year... But I have been working with my chiropractor and a sports massage guy (less expensive than an MRI). My chiro believes that if I continue not to stress it and stretch and massage regularly, it will be okay. Most of the time, I don't have pain anymore. Just when I started to run last month, it became inflamed again. Chiro said that meant it wasn't healed. If I'm still bothered after the first of the year, will probably break down and see an MD.

Yeah, I hear you.... And we aren't far from the first of the year now. So it's not like you'd be putting it off for a really long time.

Actually, I was at the doctor, so I asked about the shoulder. If I hadn't already been there, I wouldn't have made a separate appointment. I figured I'd get my $$$ worth. LOL

"Tendonitis."

She didn't feel it was a rotator cuff tear because the pain didn't worsen when I lift my arms.

So she lumped it into a generic inflammation category, I guess. LOL

Oh, and she said ice wouldn't hurt it. (Yeah, like that's gonna happen. I hate anything cold.)

My sports massaged therapist helped wonders with my shoulder - Hopefully you will see the same results.

Unless it is something that requires surgery, and MD is likely to prescribe the same things you are already doing - of course, I'm sure you already thought of that!

edit - argh, I can't fix the stupid quote thingy

That's what I thought. I've been in this sport long enough to know what MD's do with soft tissue injury. RICE, NSAIDs. If it still bothers you, we'll do an expensive MRI and tell you, yeah, it's tendonitis.

this reminds me, I should go stick my foot in a bucket of ice

hard to think about doing when it's like 10 degrees or something outside!

Yeah, I wasn't surprised when she said "tendonitis."

But at least she didn't say "rotator cuff." That would have been worse.

She asked if the pain was bad enough to require a cortisone shot. Uh, no thanks.

I hear ya. I've been tempted to apply for a job at a Y that's 20 minutes from home just for the 50meter, 78 degree indoor pool at their facility. I get so tired of doing flipturns!

I just realized that I am finishing up my 4th consecutive week with no running or cycling - my foot is marginally better - at least it's not swelling up quite as much

I sure hope it's 100% by the end of the month - If I want to do the entire distance at the HyVee tri in June, I have got to get running again

barqhead - 2007-12-08 10:35 PM What did the doc say about your shoulder?
"Tendonitis." She didn't feel it was a rotator cuff tear because the pain didn't worsen when I lift my arms. So she lumped it into a generic inflammation category, I guess. LOL Oh, and she said ice wouldn't hurt it. (Yeah, like that's gonna happen. I hate anything cold.)

Umm isnt water cold when you swim in it?

Not at my pool.

They use it for rehab, so the water is around 86 F (30 C).

It's like a large bathtub. Unfortunately, I am now used to bathtub water, which means it will be horrible if I ever need to swim anyplace else. LOL

Dee swims in really warm water if I remember right - not necessarily by choice though

Yuck - thats why I hate the two indoor pools i have access too... that and they are only 25m... maybe Im just picky?

I hear ya. I've been tempted to apply for a job at a Y that's 20 minutes from home just for the 50meter, 78 degree indoor pool at their facility. I get so tired of doing flipturns!

I understand... for me it just means my training is up to the weather gods as I use the 50m outdoor pool at the uni which I think is slightly heated (not that youd tell but in winter Im sure it will make a difference!

barqhead - 2007-12-08 10:41 PM That's what I thought. I've been in this sport long enough to know what MD's do with soft tissue injury. RICE, NSAIDs. If it still bothers you, we'll do an expensive MRI and tell you, yeah, it's tendonitis.
Yeah, I wasn't surprised when she said "tendonitis." But at least she didn't say "rotator cuff." That would have been worse. She asked if the pain was bad enough to require a cortisone shot. Uh, no thanks.

ewww, i had a cortisone shot once, when i popped a tendon out of place playing racquetball, all it did was mask the pain and I abused it to the point of requiring surgery

yep - no thanks
