Moonrocket - 2012-07-31 5:55 PM I'm getting nervous on my half swim. The Res is 77 per the race site. I kind of hope it pops a degree so it's not wetsuit legal- it's too hot for a full sleeve, but I want the speed if it's legal!

Is the race this weekend? If so, good luck!

Training question for the guru's and advisors.  It's about my run pace at HIM distance.

I ran a little over an 8:00 mile in last marathon.  I was hoping to hit this pace for HM of HIM after 56 mile bike.  If the weather is a non factor (in the 80-90 degree range and not 90-100), is an 8:00 mi/pace realistic?  Should I give it 1-2 miles to feel it out on race day at a little slower pace, and if it feels good, then go for it?  I plan on trying to reverse split the swim/bike portion, or at worst finish even, so energy levels should be high for the run.

I just ran a 6.2 miler with 7:40/mi pace in 90 degrees, with the goal of hitting 8:00/mi pace.  It was just to hard to keep the pony's in the stable.Smile

So exciting that your first tri is just a couple of days away! I think your run pace goal seems very realistic considering what you've done in the past and how your training has been going.  I would definitely plan on taking it easy the first few miles to feel things out.  I would almost go as far as to hold back the first half of the run and then crank it up if you feel good.  I overcooked the bike on my first couple of HIMs and probably went out too fast on the run.  That combo does not make for an enjoyable run.  Best bet is to take it easy to start and enjoy the rest of the race, especially for your first.

Thanks for the advice.  I'll plan on cruising the first 3-6 miles and seeing how it goes.  My goal is a 6:00:00 finish.  Hoping the heat stays 90 or below.

What a bummer! One of my co workers did it and had a blast. Did you have to pull out of the ride?

Thanks! Boulder 70.3 on Sunday! I picked up my packet tonight with my teammates.I even signed up my 2yo for the ironkids race tomorrow. She has to swim/ run through the water 25 yards, bike (on a strider) 1/3 of a mile and run 250 yards. She is so excited! I get to run with her for the bike and run. She has watched a ton of races there and done a few running races in the stroller with me. I hope she doesn't get overwhelmed.

Hey folks,

Sorry for being MIA recently.  I've had pretty low motivation for tri training the last couple of weeks.  I've (mostly) still done the training volumes, but it's been like pulling teeth!  I realize I don't really like running in the summer, which I guess is ok since I built up a pretty solid running base over the winter and have been able to maintain my long runs despite not running during the week. Plus, in the 2 tris I've done this year, my run has been my strongest leg despite only running 1-2x/week!

I HAVE been pretty gung ho about my 5k swim training, though.  I'm expecting to blow last year's time out of the water (pun intended!) My biggest worry for my HIM, though, is that the water will be in the 70's so everyone will wear a wetsuit; I would want to wear mine too for the extra speed, but at the risk of overheating.  I'd rather have it be in the 60's (more comfy wetsuit water) or in the 80's (wetsuit illegal).  At least with the 5k swim, there is a wetsuit & no-wetsuit division, so the overall standings are completely based on ability and not equipment.

So I guess what's really been slipping is my biking.  I've been getting long rides in on the weekends (30-60+ miles), but during the week I haven't even been bike commuting or doing shorter rides as much as I normally do.  It's always been my worse leg, so I'm sure I'll be super slow when I do my half at the end of the month!  In the meantime, I actually won a bike performance analysis with Robbie Ventura, so I'm getting that done this week.  Hopefully he'll be able to tell me what to focus on in the coming weeks (and in general) because lately I haven't been doing much of anything with my bike training!

ANYWAYS! Catching up a bit on the thread-

Melissa- Congrats on finishing your third year!  You definitely deserve your upcoming vacation, and probably need it considering your upcoming busy year ahead!

Neal- Sorry to hear about your crash!  You don't seem to have very good luck at RAGBRAIFrown

Cynthia- Awesome about your new bike!  Always fun to have a new toy!

Kevin & Kate - GOOD LUCK on your respective races tomorrow!  From your posts all season, I know you guys are super prepared and will kick butt.  Can't wait to hear how it went.

Kate- Did you ever figure out what to do for your Xterra race?

We're expecting highs at 97 in Spokane tomorrow, after being in the mid 80's for the last 10 days.Frown  Oh well, Maybe my run will suffer, but that's why I trained in the hottest parts of the day!  My packet p/u is today!  I'm gettin pretty antsy.

Just have to gush about the ironkids race today. My daughter had a blast! I started her at the back of the wave since she's only two and it was a 3-5 yo co-ed heat. When we finished she said "mommy, next time I want to start in the front with the big kids!". She did awesome on her strider and finished with the biggest smile. She keeps coming up to me with her tiny marked arms, flexing and saying "Momma, I look tough!". She wore her finisher's medal all day long. It was so much fun! They didn't time them, it was just a participation thing for the little kids. I think I'm going to make up a little shadow box with her cap, number and a few pictures. I'd like to put the medal in, but I don't think she'll put it down for a while. The volunteers were awesome too! Now, for my race tomorrow. I don't know if it's going to be wetsuit legal or not. I assume they will tell us in the morning. I'm wishing I still had my zip up high neck suit from when I played water polo! Will people grab the straps on my suit?

Awesome Kevin!!! You beat my relay team! We went 5:41. I had a blast. I had the honor of being the very first person done in the entire race. I swam a 32:08 which I was pretty happy with. I would like to go under 30, but need to train more for that. I really enjoyed the swim and am thinking of doing some OWS races. It was so hot! I was amazed at all of the crazy fit people.

After my swim yesterday I decided I have to drop my Xterra.  It's just too much.

The race directors let me move my entry to a sprint at the end of Sept.  So, I get to extend my season a month and still do a race.  Also, I did a tri on that course 4 years ago (only race I've done before this year.)  So I think I'm just going to focus on crushing my time from four years ago :-)  Now to find a good 8 week sprint plan and get back to it.

Taking off for a few to the Ocean.  Hope everyone's training is going well.

I plan on swimming in the Ocean for the first time in my wettie!  Pretty excited for that.  I may get 1 or 2 short runs in as well, but other than that, a little break for this weeks excercise.  I may eat too much sea food, and have a few too many barly pops.Wink

It's 2:01 in the morning and I can't sleep - must be guilt from not checking in for the past two weeks.Wink

I've spent the last 14 days moving my family from one campus house to a new one.  While the place is bigger and has a killer deck (we grilled tonight - it was awesome!), moving is no fun.  But we are making progress - I'd say we have 50% of our stuff unpacked.  The upside is - unpacking and moving boxes for 5-8 hours per day burns a lot of calories.

Despite the move - I've been getting my workouts in and am tapering for a b!tch of a century this saturday.  I've got one more short ride tomorrow morning and then will do the deal this Saturday.  I've had some pretty good rides so I should be able to do it - and the ride ends at a brewery so I will have good motivation to make it to the finish.  Hoping that I will get to experience some of the good mojo that Kate and Kevin enjoyed to finish under 6 in their HIMs last weekend.

Have not been checking in too much. My foot has been bugging me and I finally went to the dr. yesterday. Went for an xray but the Dr thinks it is this:

Morton's neuroma is a swollen or thickened nerve in the ball of your foot. When your toes are squeezed together too often and for too long, the nerve that runs between your toes can swell and get thicker. This swelling can make it painful when you walk on that foot. High-heeled, tight, or narrow shoes can make pain worse. Sometimes, changing to shoes that give your toes more room can help.

Guess no more wearing high heal shoes...Laughing

Will try get into Physio tomorrow. On anti-inflammatory now. Hoping this goes away sooner then later. It is dragging me down. I might look at buying a new pair of bike shoes. The ones I have now are pretty narrow for my wide feed. I am thinking this may be the cause. One lousy triathlon this year...
