NH | Subject: RE: Jeff Y's Group - CLOSEDDirk, looks like some pretty nice recovery runs.  With a day off today it seems like you'll be absolutely fine for your run tomorrow and back on track.  You've got a lot of fitness in those legs so there should be no real setback.  Looking good for that marathon. |

I have a class/type 3 AC separation and now I sort of wish that I got it fixed back when I tore it in college. Definitely be careful on the swim Jeff. Obviously you can swim with one arm, but be careful and not make it worse. We will definitely watch your rehab and you can count on us to be on your case to make sure you're following your PT correctly. |

There is a bone spur in there, I think he said on my scapula that may have been what cut the rotator cuff? There is also a big impingement of the clavicle that needs to be dealt with. And a small tear of the Labrum. He will cut off the end of my collar bone to relieve that pressure. He will fix up the Labrum. He will fix the rotator cuff. he will remove the bone spur. Then, depending on the condition of the Labrum he will decide whether he needs to detach my bicep tendon and move it to attach at the top of the humerous. That was the weirdest thing. If the Labrum can't be fixed, then the bicep tendon will always be a problem. Moving it will result in function equal to the original location. I jumped on to his calendar for Tuesday.

Sounds bad, but at least you know. Are you saying you're going in for the surgery Tues? |

The dr sees some seriously bad shoulders I guess, because he doesn't feel this is super serious. Not going to race tomorrow. Over the last few days my shoulder has been feeling less stable. Dr was ok with the idea if I would avoid using my right arm on the swim, but I don't feel like running, transitioning, peeling off a wetsuit... That's how much its hurting. |

Packet pickup is at 5pm today. Forecast at race start is 55 degrees with a high around 80 by 1pm.  The lake water temp yesterday was 84.  I anticipate a pretty chill bike ride before it starts to warm up.  I guess I'd best see if I can find my arm warmers in my winter running gear box.   These are my estimates for my time expectations: Swim: 43 minutesBike: 1:30 ~18mph Run: 1:00 I finished in 3:10:14.1 I do believe we can call it a successful race. I plan on spending the rest of the day laying on the couch watching college football. I'll write up the race report later this weekend. Swim     39:47 |

Shortly into the race I noticed an old friend running ahead of me. Well I did not want to be outdone so I caught up with him and then proceeded to leave him behind!! Finished the race with a new PR at 24:34, this is 20s off of my previous best which was set just last week. Why is this dissappointing you ask? I wanted this to be an easy run for charity and save my legs for tomorrow's tri! Oh well it was fun running that fast, I actually slowed down in the middle thinking I needed to reserve energy. finish was amazing as I was able to spring at top speed and run down a guy that had been 25yds iin front of me with less than 100 to go. My Garmin says I went from 7mph up to 17mph (that's amazing)!!! 4/8 in AG and 42/186 overall. I am getting closer to the podium on these 5K. Hopefully tomorrow's performance is as good as today's.    |

I am glad you decided not to do the race last weekend. By the description you had given of your injury it sounded like there was something pretty substantialy wrong. It's too bad about the surgery but in the long haul you know it'll be much better. It certainly isn't something I am sure you're looking forward to. I agree with Jonathon....we can help hold your feet to the fire for your rehab, but I don't really see you as someone that will need to be prodded to make sure you get the rehab done. If anything you'll be like my PT told me I was, "someone I have to tell to not do too much." |

What were some of the porblems you seem to have had? Matt, It sounds like you are happy with the 5k. What about the triathlon? I think you are seeing the benefit of those longer distance runs already. I also don't think you're going to have any problems running the entire half marathon in November. Pacing will be key, but I really don't think there are going to be any endurance factors keeping you from moving well throughout the race. Plan to keep your long runs gradually increasing in distacne and plan to run all of those runs. Remember to PACE, PACE, PACE through all of it. Your long run pace should be something that is easy on your cardio but slightly hard on your legs.

Especially as I size up the results and see that I would have probably been 2nd OA with the fastest bike split. But I did the mature thing. It may be a while before I log in again. Any emails that go out through the run group list should be seen though. I kinda got in to swimming with 1 arm today. I even raced a teammate in an all out 25m and won (she got to use both arms). That was fun. |

Check it again today and see if it still stands with that time. I don't really think it's possible. You know what I think? I think it's a 2 lap swim course and he bailed after one lap....or was simply rescued and crossed the mat when he was brought back to shore.

I think it's a 2 lap swim course and he bailed after one lap....or was simply rescued and crossed the mat when he was brought back to shore. They left out the leading 1 in the original time posting - his swim time was actually 1:43:07. But I did some checking and found the 44:51 swim split by Luc VanLierde in Ironman Europe 1997 is the fastest. Unreal. I know it hurts, but I'm also glad you decided against racing. If it's a "simple" surgery, keep it that way by not adding more complications. And we'll definitely keep your feet to the fire on the rehab. I think the most important part of the rehab will be exactly what Dirk points out - not going too fast. Edited by wbayek 2011-09-12 3:29 PM |

Probably because I give no time at all to the pool. I will have to work on that. total time was 1:43. My swim place was 150, bike 102 and run 98. Easy to see where the weakness is!! I will post the RR as soon as I can get it finished. |

As hard as it has been, I am really happy to have been able to accomplish this much running. The real rewards are from the races and hopefully higher placements in my races due to the additional mileage. Jeff, I'll throw a few prayer up for you and your surgery today. This week will suck a bit without a lot of physical activity for you, but like I said, be smart and stick to the plan. Hopefully the surgery will go perfect and you'll be up and running in no time. I'm in San Diego....awaiting my baggage to arrive from a mixup with a lady who lives north of Seattle. We had the exact same bag. I actually picked her bag up from the baggage claim in San Diego, brought it to my hotel and when I opened it, found out that it was hers. Luckily she had a name tag on the bag and I called her up. She was in a grocery store and when I told her about her bag, she walked out to her car (in Seattle) and opened up MY bag and found out what had happened. The bag is unique, but we both checked into JetBlue yesterday morning at Boston, Logan aiport. Somehow they must have flip-flopped. |

If you can get a cheap trainer and get a solid running base leading into winter, then switch your focus to bike in January, you will have and incredible jump in the standings for next season. Focus on the the swim a little too, but it's going to be the bike and run that make the biggest difference in your races. |

Right now it is 42 degrees, which is very nice, but I would like to see something closer to the upper 40's before I head out.
