The race was great.  I was nervous for sure, but very comfortable that I was properly trained and new what to expect.  I didn't expect so many high end bikes, but it made me feel better that my low end bike wasn't going to get hurt in the rain :-).

The weather sucked, but I had a blast anyway.  My wife said I had a smile on my face the entire time.

Blog about it here (with pics).  http://blog.ransick.org/2010/05/my-first-tri.html

BT race report here (with times) http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=208559

Thanks for all the support!  My 2nd race is next weekend.

here's a change of subject:

anyone know where to find / what to call a water bottle that sits on/near the handlebars? on one of my 1st rides one of the riders had a bottle sitting near the aerobars with a straw sticking up, such that she could hunker down low & drink while riding. haven't seen anything like that since, and was wondering if that was something easily found (or perhaps not rec'd at all?). I'm still not all that good at riding steadily with one hand to flash turn signals & warning signs, let alone reaching down and pulling out my water bottle to hydrate and replacing it while riding, and i really need to be drinking more while riding as the temps are climbing.

any suggestions (besides more practice grabbing the bottle while pedaling)?

thanks!

I'm looking forward to hearing the responses since this is something that I am still HORRIBLE at doing myself and I don't want to go thirsty.  Cry

Something like this?
If you order this you may have to order the mounting hardware separate.

Here is another that has an insulated pack around it
http://www.roadbikereview.com/cat/accessories/water-carriers/bontrager/PRD_440019_4192crx.aspx

Word of caution - they only hold about 20oz of water. If you fill them fuller than that you will get splashed. A lot of people use ice in them to cut down on the splashing.

Thanks, but will something like that work without aerobars? I just have the standard road bike handlebars....

I really don't know if they will or not. I'm going to lean towards no. Reaching down to get your water takes some getting used to. I know some people that will completely stop to get a drink because they can't do it on the move, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Maybe go to your LBS and ask them if it would be possible to add an aerodrink bottle to your road bike.

Ann, I see you want to do Ironman China 2012. What about China Ironman that attracts you. A few of the athletes this year got food poisoning there. Not that you will but wondered why China and not something closer to your back yard.

I suggest not worrying about the water bottle just yet.  Practice riding with one hand for a few hundred yards, then switch and ride with the other hand for a while, then switch back.  You might need to build up to it, but it will be valuable.  Do this for a while on every ride (when there is no traffic).  At first do it on smooth road/trails only.  After a while, do it on bumpy roads.  Once you master that, the water bottle will be easy.  It will come in handy some time when you get a bug or sweat in your eye or need to blow out a snot rocket.

...that's an admirable goal and sounds like good advice, though not sure I can do it for a few feet yet. Appreciate the advice though... I've been able to get in one good ride + one day on the trainer a week, but maybe I ened to devote time on a 3rd day to one-handed-training-in-the-neighborhood, too!

Then I would start at 5 seconds per hand.  Look at it like a drill that you need to be able to do.  Start really low where it is comfortable for you.  I bet you are surprised how fast you get comfortable if you push yourself a little.

I was going to go do it with a friend, but I'm not sure she is going to do it now.

I'm starting to think either IMLP or IMAZ in 2012. IMLP would be closer, but I love Arizona, and my BFF may be living there by then. I still have time to decide.

Great  not sure which one of those I would like better. Each one has its own challenges. I am looking forward to the OLY in IL later this year. Am looking at doing New Orleans 70 in Apr 2011 and have committed to a friend on doing Steel head HIM in Benton Harbor, MI in the July/ Aug 2011.  As my swimming gets better I dream of doing an IM sometime in 2012.

IMAZ would be flatter, but that isn't necessarily a good thing.

I will do whichever one I can get a Sherpa for.

IMAZ would be hot hot but a Dry Hot (meaning lower humidity). Having worked in AZ(Phoenix) for a year I believe it to be like doing the IronMan in a Sauna. Lot of people talk about Lake Placid though. Not read anthing on IMAZ.  I wil probably shoot for IMWI later in the year. It would be my sole training purpose for the year.

IMAZ is usually late November, so the temp isn't that bad. LP is coming up soon, that is why there is a lot of talk about it.

From what I've read, for most of them you do have to sign up a year early.

I've already decided I would pay the $1100 to get in a charity spot when I want to do it if I can't get a regular spot. The extra $550 for a charity spot would be less than I'd spend to fly out and stay there for a few days to volunteer.

Are you thinking of volunteering the year before to get better idea of the course?  That's my goal for IMWI. Like this year I have volunteered for the Steelhead IM 70 at Benton Harbor. I believe it will answer a lot of questions.

I could volunteer at LP, but AZ is too far away.

As a third choice I would do Beaches2Battleships. It's not an ironman branded event, but it is still the full 140.6 mile distance and I have heard good things about it. I like the Wilmington, NC area, too.
