Same here.  I had a hard time getting around slower swimmers a bunch of times in the first stretch.  I would look up, find a way around, but inevitably, someone going slower in front of me also found that way to go!  was planning on getting the bouy line around the turn buoy, but ended up getting there much quicker - like about half way.  I got way off course on the long leg back and had a lot a clear water, but no one to draft off and probably added 100-200 metres to my swim.  I have a problem when the sun is out, I always want to "swim towards the light" in the water.  I also couldn't see the buoys very well.  After doing that for about 10-15 minutes, finally realized that if I kept the light between 1 and 2 o'clock in my field of vision, i wouldn't be too far off course.

OMG yes, this is exactly what I did. I had a great swim...standard stuff, got my goggles kicked off (I'm a believer in wearing them under the cap now!!!), got beat up a little at the start, but never panicked. 

My biggest problem was the occasional "sheepdog swimmer"...either someone swimming faster or slower than me, but going off course (I really sighted well during this swim...I know I was going the right way) and pushing me with them! Happened a LOT!

Yeah, me too.  I didn't find semi-clear water until the final turn buoy.

I think maybe there were a couple hundred more starters this year?  Not sure.  I'm a MOP swimmer and got clobbered numerous times.  I guess it just goes with the territory.

Shoot, I thought that was you.  Was going to stop and introduce myself but my second time through you were running off to get medical help for the guy that collapsed at the top of the hill. Do you know if he got pulled out of the race? He looked like he was in a bad place. 

I think my problem was my start spot.  Last two years at IMWI I started wide right.  This year I started just right of the ski jump, about 3rd person back.  It was definitely more dense waiting for the start.  I was getting inadvertently (I think!) hit/kicked for 10 minutes before the gun went off.  Didn't have clean swimming until after the first turn, by which point I had worked myself inside the buoy line.

If I were doing IMWI again next year, I'd start somewhere near where you did.  And last I looked there were still charity slots available . . .

I was starting to worry that I was the only one.....

Thanks for a great season, everyone!  My ironman journey was super great and I ejoyed all the talkin', story swappin and advice givin in our little IMWI thread!!   And I hope you all had super radical races and enjoyed all the ups and downs of the day.  I've been having fun reading everyone's race reports - I'm so impressed with everyone's successes!!  I LOVE IMWI, and i'll for sure be back for #4!!
