Hey Warren, that's some awesome riding in the mountains. You are ready for a stage in the Pyrenees!
While it's quite hilly in my area we don't have any sustained climbs that are as long as will be found in the 'real' mountains. But we have some steep ones. Here is a strava segment of a hill that's infamous near me.
http://app.strava.com/segments/787626
Check out the hill's elevation profile. There is a place on the hill where the grade reaches past 26%. How did they even pave a road this steep???

I agree on the paving - and notice how few people have done that segment! Those are even scary to drive up (or down) in a car. We have very few "long" climbs around here either, but it always seems to be up or down.

Here's one up at the lake Jonathan and I did twice in one ride last summer. Shorter but even steeper. http://app.strava.com/segments/1664250

Not sure why this segment stops where it does since the climb continues another .3 up the road at a slighly lesser but still dastardly pitch. Two other guys riding with us are on the segment page MUCH faster than me! We hit this after 20 miles and 2500 feet of climbing, so we were all a little spent, and then again after 35 miles and 4000 feet. That's a warning to all of you to NEVER agree to meet up with Jonathan for a hill climbing fest with his cycling buddies!

I want to redo this climb this year to see how much I've improved - I was really struggling last year and even dropped my chain near the beginning the second time around.

No way! I saw a spot on that climb with over 80% grade!?!?! How do you not pop a wheelie?
In a car, you would be looking out the windshield and see only sky...not the road?
Crazy!

It's steep, but not THAT steep! And yeah, it's a touch scary going down.

1 month should do it, at least for Oly distance.

With my running, I'll never be on anyone's list. Maybe an aqua bike? You'd still crush me but at least I wouldn't embarrass myself. How about age and weight adjusted?

Two things from me.

First, I'm doing Timberman as a Make-A-Wish racer. And yes, I'll be plugging for donations soon. But the news is that Andy Potts is racing, and he's the Wish guest speaker Saturday and he'll be hanging out with us for a few hours. Can't wait to meet him! Anyone have any advice you want me to pass on?

Second, I now know my max heart rate. On my ride today, I was finishing up and coasting down a pretty step hill. There is absolutely no shoulder in this part - the white line is the edge of the road. Anyway, I'm going 33-35, and a tractor trailer is coming up the hill. Meanwhile, an SUV behind me decides he can't wait 13 seconds to pass and pulls up next to me. There was no extra room, the wind was blowing, and a gust pushes me a few inches left and the car actually bumped my leg. I served to the right but not off the road, and somehow didn't wipe out. The car zipped off. Heart rate hit 203, highest legitimate reading I've ever seen . Guess 220-age is wrong or else I'm 17. Be careful out there everyone.

Warren, that is very scary! So glad you are okay.

I did my ride this morning on some roads with very little to no shoulder too, but thankfully everyone was patient when passing me and gave me plenty of room.

Warren, OMG....... I am happy to hear your ok!
I went out about 2 hrs later than usual and that means more traffic I also had 3 stupid people do stupid things while they were driving which caused me to come home and finish my ride inside...but I have to say nothing was a scary as your ride. one person turned in front of me, another was actually giving a biker on the other side of the road plenty of room but that meant she was close to hitting me head on, and lastly another guy pulled outninfront of me he must of thought he could beat me in his big a$$ truck that had absolutly no pick up to it so I had to slow way down as not to hit him, his window was open so I yelled HELLO..... And waved vigorously and he floored it and speed off Iam sure feeling like an idiot!

Warren I'm glad to hear that you are alright and man that is a scary situation to be in. I'm glad things turned out alirght that could have been a real disaster. I did my long ride today and towards the end of the ride someone literally tried to run my friend Wynn off the road and it's a double lane highway with a shoulder. He was riding on the shoulder and it's wide! Thankfully nothing happened other then my friend givng the guy the finger and being right fully upset. Some people have no respect for others and have no business being behind the wheel of any vehicle.

I got in another great long ride today. Wynn and I rode the hills to Port Jefferson and I got in 87.5 miles today. We did the all the hills we normally hit and I wound up doing 12 Oakwood repeats. We must have spent 2 hours just doing the repeats. He also took me up another hill that was worse than Oakwood if that is possible.

If someone tells you that you haven't lived until you've done "insert here" be afraid. In my case it was the steep hill on East Broadway. Holy cow it was a tough climb. Before we even got to the hill Wynn was like get in your lowest gear and just spin and by the way you'll be standing on this climb. As we're going up he's like ok rest on here. I'm thinking this is going to be bad if we are trying to rest while we're climbing LOL! He was right though I almost made it to the top but I had to get up at the very end. I almost made it seated, not bad for my first time up it.

After the repeats we pretty much limped on home. The way back was tough because we were riding in a big headwind. We passed by the jail in Riverhead so these are affectionately called "Jail Runs". It was a tough one up Route 24 to Route 51 because the wind was so bad I thought I wasn't going to make it I was riding so slow. We made back to Wynn's house and I actually felt like I could ride some more which was good so I decided to run a mile to see what it felt like.

Two times around the block about a .5 mile each loop and some uphills and downhills. I felt good and ran faster than I thought I could. As I'm running I'm thinking man I can freakin do this. I think I could have run some more but I ended it at a mile. We were out a long time today at least 6 plus hours with the stops we made. Another positive step towards actually being able do this at IMWI. I think I'm on track and I know I can do it. Next week we'll be skipping the hills and it will be a century ride. I've been wanting to do one so I'll finally get my chance.

Quick check in, I'll catch up after while but wanted to let you all know I will not be making the trip to Indy for the race. Originally we were supposed to have a family reunion but that has fallen through due to my 96 year old (and only living grandparents) poor health. Then my sister and her family who live in Oklahoma decided to come visit anyway that weekend so I figured I couldn't make it and now I just heard from mom that Hospice thinks Grandma only has a day or two left at the most.

My parents have been really worn out and not themselves for the last few months while trying to cope with Grandma's declining health and the realization that she may not be getting better. Please any prayers are appreciated.

Dina, I just prayed for your parents and grandma.

To those of you mentioning dangerous drivers, you should check into your local laws. I believe in Texas, all we have to do is report them and they will get fined.. no real evidence needed. The hard part is to get their license plate number before they speed off.

Well, we had the best July weather ever here today... I rode from 8am-12:30 and it was overcast & 80 degrees the entire ride w/ some mist. The humidity was still 97%, so I sweated out about 8 lbs... but it was still such a great ride. 72 miles on the bike and 1 mile run right after and I dont feel near as worn out as usual. During the ride, I kept wondering why my HR was so low... I'm guessing the cooler temps... basically my avg HR was 10 beats lower than normal for this ride. That's good b/c the ironman I'm looking at is supposed to be cooler, even cold some years, which I may not be prepared for since I'm doing zero training in cold weather.

Also, I've got some Infinit on the way that I'm going to try out as my main nutrition (with maybe a couple solid bars or stinger waffles on the bike)

Forgot to mention, weeks 6 & 7 in my training plan went really well. Got in pretty much all the running and biking called for and was close on the swim. So, that feels nice since I pretty much missed weeks 4 & 5.

Checking in!  I'm finally back from my camping vacation!  It was super fun but now I need a vacation from my vacation!

I did a sprint triathlon the first weekend we were gone.  It was the 8th time I've done it.  It's a tradition now.  I placed 2nd in my age group on a hot and miserable day.  Aunt Flo was an unwelcome houseguest, dehydrated, overheated, super bad headache.  I did not try my best.  It was pure survival.  I won the best ever 2nd place goodie, though!  A beer growler!!!!  I promptly had it filled with kombucha!  (Don't get me wrong.  I LOVE beer!  The kombucha was calling my delirious brain!)

The rest of our vacation was at a family reunion.  It was hot.  Enough said.

I'm so glad to be back home so I can get back to regular training!

Andy Potts Huh?  Let him know that I think he should work on his swimming.  If he were to train a little bit on his swim he might make the podium a little more often.  You can give him my phone number if he would like any personal advice.

You ride sounds like someone could use a lesson earned with a baseball bat.  I have had similar types of passes where I can hear a vehicle behind me and they see oncoming traffic and wait for just long enough to begin their pass to make things interesting........or STUPID.  I'm happy to announce I've never had anything as close as you've had.  The closest I came was when she decided to pass on a road with no shoulder in oncoming traffic at a somewhat slow speed.  As she began her pass there was a car oncoming that had to get off the road and head toward a ditch.  No birds were flying on my account but I cannot say for the driver of the other vehicle.  I was too busy keeping my bike on the white line or the 2 inches of asphalt on the field side of the line.

Besides your ride, it seems yesterday was a bad for most everyone while riding in traffic.  It's good to hear nothing happened to anyone and that must be from the mad bike skills everyone possesses.  Keep safe out there and ride defensively.

Tracy welcome back we missed you. Congrats on the 2nd place finish in your traditional sprint tri. Glad to hear that you had a great vacation.

Dirk looks like Andy Potts is doing just fine today at Lake Placid. I'm not sure what you may have said to him but it seems like it's working LOL!

Just wanted to wish all my friends who are volunteering and racing in Lake Placid to have a safe and fun race. I'll be tracking all these guys through out the day in between shopping and my workouts.

One more thing I found out more about the one hill climb I did yesterday on E.Broadway. It's a 12% grade according to my friend. I can't believe it, there is no way I could have made it up there last year and I'm pretty surprised that I got up there as well as I did yesterday. I think I actually impressed myself which I don't do very often lol.

The weather here has been really mild too.  As I headed out for my ride this morning the temp was a brisk 56 degrees and a wind of 10MPH making for a really cool first few miles.  The humidity is still up but you can't really tell it when it's that cool.  It was a great day for riding but really hard to believe it's late July.

Your HR will definitely be lower when the weather's as cool as you mentioned.  One thing to keep in mind about training long on the bike for IM, make sure you stay in the right zones.  You'll want to practice riding easy to set yourself up to ride properly at B2B in October.  If your HR is climbing a lot during your long rides you are wearing yourself down more quickly.

Tony is a big user of Infinit but I have never really tried it.  Well, except for my first 70.3 last season.  It seemed to work alright for me during the race but it's not a good idea to use something new on race day if you're more sensitive to changes in your GI system.

I forgot to tell you guys about my Thursday night ride!

So I leave the bike shop with a group of 7. The peloton is rolling along and I just got done pulling, so I'm in the back... I hear someone holler something at the front, then I see bikes swerving left and right... I'm thinking there must be a pot hole or debris. Next thing I see is a huge copper head snake coiled up (one of the middle bikes had already ran over him) and he is striking at me... I can still see the two huge fangs. Anyway, I think the lead rider thought it was just a stick until she got right right up on it... ha.
On our way back in, a deer bolt out of the woods and runs across our path about 10 yards in front of the peloton... so we've re-named the Thursday ride to "Wildlife Thursday night ride". I think the deer could have done a lot more damage than the snake... that would hurt to get T-boned by a deer... and probably would have taken the whole group down...

That sounds like an interesting ride changer......Copperhead biting you on the leg, the onset of delirium, a ride to the hospital in an ambulance and stories for a lifetime.  Sounds great!  I posted a pic of a deer crossing my path on my facebook page a month or so ago.  I was the only one around for that one and if the deer had been much, much closer and taken me off the bike no one would have found me for hours.

______

I had another great riding weekend!  Yesterday was long riding day and I wanted to get at least 80 miles in the saddle.  I headed out from home to ride to the meet site for the group and got there in the planned time averaging just over 20 MPH.  Nothing hard but the wind was calm for the most part and I stayed slightly under threshold.

Once the group took off a couple of the fasties took off like it was a race and I wondered how this "easy" long ride was going to play out.  These guys set the tone for the entire ride.  We settled into a pace with the light wind at our backs and a fast pace, averaging at or over 21 MPH for the first 21 miles.

We got about 3 miles from the halfway point and I was just pulling into the front position.  Riding in a double pace line, I looked over at a fellow rider and asked if he was "ready."  I was just kidding but he apparently didn't think so and he bolted!  I laid the hammer down and promptly caught and overtook him and never let up until we were about a quarter of a mile from the meet.  Those 3 miles averaged out to be just over 26 MPH and no one was catching me.......So much for riding easy!

At the turning point we stopped and refilled water bottles and discussed the rest of the ride.  Most of the guys wanted to cut the mileage down to 42 over the planned 48 and so we went short.  Now that's not to say we headed out easy.  As  matter of fact we kept the hammer down as we headed back into the wind.  This time we formed a single pace line and took turns grinding out the pace.  I pulled another long pull at a much lower effort but still managed to pull for a shade over 2 miles at 22.5 MPH into a 10 MPH wind.  We finished the ride with a 21.9 MPH average (according to another rider) for 42 miles.  We were just ripping along!

Once back at the meeting site where we took off from I took a few minutes to recover and headed back toward home.  I had another 20 miles +/- that I was looking to get in but this time I would be facing some crosswinds all alone as I headed south.  By now the winds were a little bit gusty but only to around 14 or so, not too bad.  Luckily I knew I was going to be getting the benefit of a tailwind for a little over half of my miles back into the house............

........I ended with an eaverage of 21.5 MPH for the entire 82 mile ride.  A good ride.

Then today, without going into all of the details, I rode with the TT national champion again today.  This time was with a larger group of people but Gary laid the punishment down!!!  I was above 100% MLSS for a short stretch and above threshold for much of the 30 miles back to the meeting site.  There was a long sprint at one point that I Gary was putting the pedal to the metal and dropping us like school kids on walmart fixie bikes.  I sprinted ahead and was able to catch the one guy that was able to stay o his wheel for a minute.  Then, not more than 10 seconds after I got David's wheel he could hold no longer and he pulled out..........And I had just gotten there and was hoping to recover.......Not a chance!!  Another great weekend ride!

All in all during my normal 3 day weekend I ran 18 miles in 3 days and rode almost 160 miles.  This is my interpretation of a great weekend!

Will that sounds like a crazy ride, more like a safari as opposed to a bike ride. I do use infinit on the bike and it works well for me. I like the fact that you can customize the mix to your liking. If you haven't checked them out you should give them a look.

Dirk sounds like you had a great weekend of training. Those sound like some very fast and hard efforts on those rides. You guys were definitely flying out there. The more you ride with that group and with Gary the better you're going to get. Sounds like you have a great group of riders to push you.

Congrats to the finishers out at Lake Placid yesterday. I had 6 friends there and they all finished. It was cool to track them and see some of them finish especially some of the guys who came down towards the end. I'm happy for all those guys especially the first timers.

Dina, tough time for you and your family. I'll have you in thoughts and prayers.

Will, great to hear things are coming around.

Tracy, so good to "hear" your voice again and see you in a race. Great job.

Tony, that climb should just be more proof to you that you are ready. Keep going for these last 6 weeks.

Dirk, you are officially un-invited to the Lake Winnipesaukee bike camp! I average 18 for 60 miles and feel like I'm a rock star!

Meeting Potts should be even more fun now that he's the IMLP winner. Can't wait.

Tony, this is incredible! Way to go....I can't believe you ran that comfortably after your ride.

Sounds like yo had an enjoyable trip.  Welcome back!

An AG placement makes for a good race.....ALWAYS!  The beer growler would be a best award for me too.  I have gotten tumblers as swag from a race but I like the sounds of your award better.

We are certainly going to miss the chance to meet you, but there are more important things.

Warren, when you meet Potts just go ahead and say the same thing I would say: "I'm coming for you".

If I am going to be a chihouha, then I'm going to be the one that stares down the pit bulls...

Oh, and how about this?? A wager that if you beat him in the race then he donates his entire season's PRO earnings to the charity!!!???

chihouha??? What are you implying?

I'll definitely make that suggestion to him, just to get his reaction.
