But I won't swim in open water alone. That's stupid. I have two small children that even though I'm divorced need their father more than their father needs to swim in open water to do tris.

I'm with you on that one.  Totally agree.  What I do is swim back and forth in the 'guarded' area in water slightly over my head.  That way if I cramp or freak out, I'm only 20 yds away from being able to stand.  It still gives me GREAT sighting practice, though...

Again, I've found the tri community here to be not very welcoming of folks who are MOPers. There's plenty of support for newbies and elites, but not for us in the middle.

Man, that's a bummer. From what I could pick up from TAN, I guess that's why Scout took a haitus...that's just sad. I fortunately haven't received any flack for having slow swim times. I think I'm harder on myself than other people are.

Here's the way I look at it. In an 600 yd sprint swim, swimming at 3 min/100 yds, it would take someone 18 min to finish the swim. A faster swimmer swimming 1:40s would do it in 10 mins. Not all fast swimmers are also fast bikers and runners, so that would put the 3 min/100 swimmer behind by only 8 min. That would only put me 2 min behind. I love the fact that I can easily make up the 2 minutes passing up swimmers with less biking and running experience (yeah, I know it's a bad thing). It makes that deficit seem insignificant.

I'm still MOP/BOP depending on the race distance, but TRIs ARE SO FUN...IT DOESN'T MATTER. I have a blast. Triathletes/cyclists/marathoners are some of the funnest people around and are very encouraging during races. I'm hoping this forum doesn't get as critical as SlowTwitch (runs for cover...)

hmmm its weird Ive heard a few people say stuff like this about support but I have NEVER experienced it... maybe you are looking for support in the wrong places?

But when Ive said I want to be able to swim a HIM swim in MOP time comfortably I got inundated with offers of support, swim plans... honestly lots of help.

And people here had been instrumental in helping me celebrate small training successes that are a big deal for me.. and I HOPE Ive been able to return some of the love..

Especially during these challenges... looks ath the props you got for your 200 mile month Scott... that was pretty cool!

Yes it was although it was kind of stressful. I don't know if I'll be doing that kind of run mileage in the off-season. I'd like Scout to redesign my workouts to 4x a week and a lot more cycling than I've doing. I've abandoned the bike

Fantastic sounds like you already have a plan for the off season after you have your time out in December! Congrats on getting it all together...

Sounds like run maintenance and base across two disciplnes... will set you up well for both sports considering the cross over between the two!

Hi everybody! Yes, Judi, I was both working and cockapoo wrangling, and neither had to do with dogs. (Wait ... WHAT?!) Kidding.

Sparco--you're still in trouble. You might have to post more hot pics to get me to forget about you forgetting me.

And Nutella--I grew up on the stuff. Perhaps you shouldn't judge Nutella by its apparent effects on me, though!

Great training and talking, all!

I'll be honest and say its not important enough to me to race tris to spend that kind of time in the pool. I can swim 100 in roughly 3 now, but I just hate the pool. I can either a) spend my time and energy becoming a competitive duathloner or b) waste time and energy and consistently finish near the bottom of my AG in tris because of my swim ability.

Its simply not worth it to me at this point. I'm even thinking of just doing run races only and riding recreationally next year. Again, I've found the tri community here to be not very welcoming of folks who are MOPers. There's plenty of support for newbies and elites, but not for us in the middle.

And spending $100 a month on swim fees when I could spending it on running shoes...

But.... wouldn't most of the people here be MOPers?

OK, I'm a newbie. And that's the only category I fit in. (Despite my post count.)

But it seems to me that most people WOULD be in the middle.

So form a MOP Support group. Wait, that comes out to MOPS for short. I think you need a better acronym than that.... MOPers United in Support, aka MOPUS.....Um.... MOPers Inspire Each Other, aka MOPIEO.... Um....

(I'm so tired that my brain is fried. Can you tell? LOL)
