They have really taken off over here in the last few years. You get an organiser putting together two or three routes of varying distances, the longest being around 100 miles. You pays your money & enter (providing there are places left of course). There were supposed to be 1000 riders in Sunday's event. Sometimes you have marshalls on road junctions to point the way, othertimes arrowed markers. I am told that some of the markers were sabotaged towards the end of the route. Luckily for my mate he knew the way as it was in the area when we train. 4everblue - 2008-04-01 6:24 AM Got to share this with you guys. Sunday was the local sportive ride. Two routes 60 & 97 miles. Due to lack of training I didn't enter this year but instead drove my riding buddy to & from the event. At the start I saw this young girl with a 24 inch wheel racing bike (kiddies size). I was impressed as I thought she must have been 16 to enter. It turns out that she was in fact 9. Yes nine! She completed the whole 60 miles in 6h 55m. Here she is at the start line, second from the right. The other two midgets on the left are my mates leaning on their bars. They're small but not as small as her.
Now that's what I call inspiration. You say you had a lack of training??? What are you talking about? You rode so much this month. That is cool that a 9-year-old did the ride--that's something my dad would have made me do at that age. One more stupid Yankee question--what is the definition of a sportive? Now I have explained have any of you come across this sort of thing over there? CHR15 did one early on in the year down in his part of the country. I believe the poseur went round with the pro's, didn't you mate. He had to walk up a hill though |
