QueenZipp - 2008-11-06 8:47 AM Morning Nibbs...swimming with a pull bouy makes me off kilter for balance

I've never used a pull buoy. But now that I've overdeveloped my kick from the one-armed swimming, I wonder if I should try it.

Being not of a swimming background whatsoever, is the pull buoy the "prop"/"device" that you insert between your legs (keep it clean here folks) to keep you from kicking and just used to focus on arms?

Leave it to you to not miss a device that goes between your legs

Yes, it's a figure 8 shaped foam thing you put between your thighs, from what I understand to minimize kicking and practice pulling. Some people like the flotation help too, which is why I never used one. I didn't want it to be a crutch while learning to swim. But I kick way too much now.

You can never kick too much! (Unless you've got angry hip flexors, like Judi)

I don't know about regarding longer races - you need to conserve that energy and the legs for the other disciplines.

That's what I've always been told. But when I was swimming with one arm, I had to kick hard to get anywhere and my legs got really tired. Now I'm used to kicking more and while it makes me faster, probably not so good for IM training. Maybe i'll tie my feet together

My 2 cents about "saving your legs" for other disciplines. I only buy this as an argument if you also coast the downhills on the bike. That's "saving your legs", right? To me, this is what training is for. You adapt. If you have a nice, strong kick and you are training for IM with it, you will be fine. It's not like you get to your IM and suddenly say "I'm going to kick like hell in this race even though I never do it in training". I think it would be far worse for your IM to drag some of the most muscle-laden parts of your body through the water causing your upper body to have to work harder than ever to keep your body in a nice, efficient, prone-position. I am a big kicker in the swim. To not do this would cause my HR to elevate way out of my comfort zone in the swim, something I really want to avoid. My kick keeps my stroke smooth and efficient. I guess you have to do what works best with your body. But the first thing I tell folks who work with me on their swim (I'm an instructor at the Y) is kick more. It decreases drag and adds to over-all swim efficiency (going faster with less effort) which is what triathlon is all about

Wow...totally opposite with me...of course I'm one of those weak swimmers who 'relearned' how to swim with Total Immersion.  My HR goes through the roof if I kick too much, but settles in with less kicking and more emphasis on streamlining (fish swimming) and efficiency.

Maybe that's why I'm not very fast...

Actually no that makes sense to me and Im not a TI swimmer but I do have the TI book. As a result this time last year I spent a bit of time working on my body rotation and that combined with increasing my upper body strength has made a HUGE difference to me.

Im a 'swimmer' swimmer and although I can kick hard and fast I tend to have a pretty gentle kick.. and quite slow compared to what you would do in say a 100m TT in the pool.

I have a 2 beat kick I think... so its more about balance than propulsion but Im also a huge fan of increasing your kicking towards the end of the swim leg to get thing pumping to your legs so standing up and moving is easier...

One GREAT tip I know is this:

1) Go swim two laps with a pull buoy

2) Go swim two laps with a kick board

Whatever was harder is where your weakness is (either your kick or your stroke

Very simple way of doing it but effective....

That's why I say you got to what's best for YOUR body. I am a hopeless 6 beat kicker. Without it, I go nowhere because I have no upper body strength. But, I have size 11 feet so when I flap those puppies in the water, I throw out a wake I'm not wasting built- in fins I am 30 seconds faster in a 500 TT with my kick vs. with a pull buoy
