Started watching "The Distance" last night so far an excellent video but now I'm feeling a bit inadequate. Is there anyone one here who does NOT have a background in athletics?

Happy Easter everyone!

I have a two-hour ride on tap, zone 3 and under.  Hopefully I get it in outside later or at least part of it outside.

Really sore today from running yesterday.

Here's a running question for you (re: my enormous blisters!)

What socks do people wear running? (if at all?!)

Is it normal to have blisters develop on your instep?

What magic potions/ tapes are used to prevent them?

(OK 3 questions then!Smile)

Cheers,
k

I have to wear thick socks, Thorlo running socks.  Lots of different kinds of socks, materials, and thicknesses.

I use Body Glide all over my heels and toes for short to medium runs and Blister Shield for long runs.  Both work well but I'm not sure if they work that much better than the good old petroleum jelly I used back in the '80s.

I just want to say that I love that wee donkey. Have I said that before. I love him and want him.

I don't get blisters. Don't hate me. I wear super thin socks. I can't run in thick socks because my feet sweat.

You just do what I did and switch them around.  I would rather run in 45-50 degrees than bike in it!

I am not Supergirl and don't have a reputation to protect though.  Wink

No, I had to turn my company car in last Monday and haven't replaced it yet. That leaves my motorcycle as my main means of transportation. The wife has a car but I don't want her to drive my to work unless it's really nasty out there. Also thanks to my slipping in my fitness I can't ride my bicycle to work like I did a couple of years ago.

Lesson for the day:
My time today for 100m front crawl kick: 3'10
My time today for 100m front crawl kick with core slightly engaged to bring my chest lower and feet higher in water: 2'42!!!!!

(My hips normally sink when I do legs only because of my weak back)

Almost 30 secs per 100m quicker with slightly tensed abs?
Bloomin 'eck! Surprised

Just a little survey.  What does everyone use for sports drinks, gels, etc.?

I want to change and really want to avoid Gatorade, Gatorade Endurance, and Power Gel.  I was using Cytomax for bike workouts and my coach says that is too complex to use for IM.  Gels don't seem to agree with me on the bike or run.  I am trying out Sport Beans for running and it seems to be going well.

Has anyone found the magic elixir?

Excellent topic!!

I prefer Powerbar gels.... I wanted to like them because they are on the IM course- and I really do.. the carmel ones are yummmy.... they are all prettty yummy.

I use GE - gatorade endurance for some of my bike training.  But for longer rides and races I use Infinit.  I LOVE IT.  Mike from infinit is awesome- he will totally help you get the rightformula.  I just ordered the IM formula at first and I HATED it... I called him- he tweeked my formula by asking some questions and now its great.  And it was free- well the replacement stuff.  Great company.

Sport beans are Ok- but I prefer Clif Shot blocks fro riding- I never tried them on a run- Im too uncoordinated to swallow solids and run but I think it would work if I did.

Lori- what did you use at IM?

I used shot bloks (two flavors), luna moons (two flavors), bananas, Gatorade Endurance and made the mistake of using a Power Gel after they ran out of bananas.  Tried to eat a PBJ sandwich at bike special needs and it wouldn't go down.  The plan for special needs this year is something salty--pretzels, PB crackers, etc.  Hope to balance acid levels and get better results.   Used one Suceed tablet per hour and drank plenty of H20.

Gels just don't work well for me and I'm not sure why.  I have tried them all (Gu, Hammer, Carboom, Crank e-Gels, etc.).  Gels=GI issues.  Shot bloks and Sharkies are both fine.  Working on determining what to use for fluid nutrition, I know it won't be Gatorade in any shape or form.  EFS Liquid Shot and Heed are possibilities as is Luna.

Cookies will be another experiment through training, likely molasses or PB cookies from a bakery.  Sport drink on the 15/45, shot bloks, etc. at the bottom of the half hour, and real food at the top of the hour for a total of 200 calories an hour.  Water on 15/30/45/60.

The sport beans work well for running for me, they sit well and I pop three beans every 15 minutes.  I have also used luna moons for running (not as messy as shot bloks--far less gooey and smaller).  The Sharkies would probably work well too.  Gu is now making Gu Chomps but I haven't seen any yet.

Now is the time to experiment!
