wmcgee62 - 2010-05-19 1:07 PM Are you thinking of volunteering the year before to get better idea of the course?  That's my goal for IMWI. Like this year I have volunteered for the Steelhead IM 70 at Benton Harbor. I believe I will answer a lot of questions.

If it's anything like the NYC Triathlon, many of us volunteer to either to get early registration or be there when registration opens up after the race.  Actually getting to see the race and scouting out longer races is a pretty smart idea though.

I could volunteer at LP, but AZ is too far away.

As a third choice I would do Beaches2Battleships. It's not an ironman branded event, but it is still the full 140.6 mile distance and I have heard good things about it. I like the Wilmington, NC area, too.

Yes I have been to NC many many time and that would be a great race/choice

In January I was like you. How could I do a triathlon or a 5K? I was the slowest swimmer by hundreds of yards.  Though I was not the slowest in the running dept but I was still a waddling penguin in the back watching as most left me in the dust.   Now 2 indoor triathlons, 1 outdoor sprint and (3) 5K runs later I am doing it. Day by day  Just know you can do it. (If I can then anyone can)

I plan on a marathon in Detroit on Oct 17 if the girlfriend will do the 5k then. If she decides she would rather not, then I will do the local Grand Rapid marathon on that weekend. Either way its a marathon that weekend

On your blog you stated you are struggling with your running. How long have you been running and is this a reoccurring thing?

thanks for that! i don't doubt that i can do either (the sprint or 5K i mean) ...not that i'm not nervous when i realize that d-day's getting closer, but i also know that all i have to do is finish with a pulse...was just laughing at the idea of a marathon or IM at this stage of my game.....!

I believe you said something about a problem with some body part but you said it is what it is. You keep plugging away and you will get there. I know you will.  My first 5 K I wanted to quit, I really did. But when I smiled and watched others. Some I stayed up with, others left me behind and there was more than 200 behind me. I just kept plugging a way and beat my goal by 7 minute and have gotten faster since. Sometimes I feel like they have to lay a stake on the ground beside me to be sure I am making progress but I keep moving.  Tonight I had swim class and personal instruction after wards. She always beats me up in the pool but I always leave the pool more confident than I went in.   Marla something in you says you can do this or you would have quit. Now go prove it. You can do this. (ok funny part -in every Adam Sandler movie there seem to be a part where they say "YOU CAN DO IT") This is  Wes -wide body penguin extraordinaire saying you can do it. Have fun

I am having fun...especially on the bike, wobbles and all - it gets better & better each time, and my death grip on downhills is abating. Yeah, I have body part issues, but what other 40-something doesn't?! I had a matching pair of knee surgeries Nov/Dec, and they're getting better & better each month. Have intermittent shoulder stuff  - old swimming injuries - but stroke work helps those. The running is progressing...only time it's really frustrating is when I want to throttle my 11-year-old running buddy, but we've also discovered that our block is exactly .22 miles around, and that we run best together-but-separate, and it's working. I've not doubted that I can do this at any point - if anything, sometimes get impatient that I don't progress faster, but am also pragmatic enough to realize that I'm not willing/able to work out more to increase my rate of improvement ... also know that if I keep it relatively slow but steady, my knees will heal better, and I'm less likely to reinjure, so that's all good. I really see this as a journey & a process, and not just a unidirectional path to one race. Don't ever imagine myself as a runner, or wanting to run more than a 10K or thereabouts (it's just so damn boring to me!), but wouldn't rule that out, either (I hear those endorphins really will talk to me at some point Smile).  Really do want to see where I can go on my bike, though...and maybe check out more OWS.

I am 47 myself so I know at the beginning my knees killed me. I would run and it would take two days to recover to walk normal. I took a good form running class and that changed my running for ever. I am up to 8 miles and can walk the next day. I still run 8 to 10 minutes then walk for a minute on long runs.  Then wind sprints I push till I can't go any more.

My anti-inflammatory meds are my "little happy pink pills" (must be middle aged if that phrase refers to meds like that!). My ortho prescribed them a few months ago, and I've learned that a few days on, a few days off, etc., helps enormously while minimizing risks of side effects from long-term use. Really cool how I have less & less pain as time goes on & I'm running more, but I'm also scrupulous about sticking just to the planned mileage (from the 0-5K training group) each week, and never running more than 2 days in a row to give the knees time to rest. Still ice them too.

I do occasionally.  A long 11 or 12 mile run usually cures that :-).

I plan to do a couple spints and olys this year along with a couple half marathons.  If I still feel this good next year, I'll try a HIM if it's cool with my wife.  If that goes well, who knows.  My multi-Ironman cousin predicts I'll do an IM in 2012.  I haven't ruled it out.  I figure I started endurance sports in my forties, so what is the rush?

I like your attitude and completely agree with you.  I really want to do a half-iron next year but a full IM or marathon are a long ways away at this point.
