This article was posted on the main forum page.  Very interesting and good read.  I'll post it on the running group page as well.

Sounds like you don't even need to try to work on this.  Maybe you should try running short............like me.  Sure you may look like a neanderthal all hunched over and knuckles dragging the ground, but it might work.  That or people will laugh at you, call you names and you would probably appear in many youtube posts, but hey it's worth a try.  Just make sure you shoot your own video and post it on here so all can see it first.

Have you ever seen him run?  In the words of Monty Python - how could it possibly get worse?

hahahaha, you guys friggin kill me.  But it's the truth...honestly how many 6'4" 190 lb guys do you know that can't run faster than a 10 minute mile?  You don't know any, so shut up.  I was actually "running" today and thinking to myself, $hit, if I try to run any taller, I'm going to hit my head on overhanging branches and traffic lights.  That just sounds dangerous.

I am going to miss my long ride for another week.  Cycling has had to take a mild back seat position while swim has been nearly non existent while running has taken the front seat.  The missing ride will worth it though, we are taking our daughter on a college visit tomorrow morning.  We are getting closer and closer to that time when we will have only one daughter at home.  I am excited and disappointed all at one time.  The months will fly by, faster than the years have already flown by, and she will be off to college.

Triathlon training may be better for me once my girls are gone but I will certainly miss the time with them.  I think I just need to stop getting older and they should follow my plan to keep them young.

When my daughters were little I threatened to stop feeding them to keep them little.  I never tried it, but dont think it was a viable plan.

I feel ya on the long bike ride...no bike out here at all. There are spin bikes at the gym but who wants to ride one of those things for more than a half hour when it's so nice out?I don't have kids yet...but it drives me nuts not to see my little niece. :-)

Wow, college visits!  I hear ya on that, it's exciting but sad.  We started late, so even though I'm about to tick past the half century mark my oldest just started high school. That has me thinking about my attempts to keep them little which were equally ineffective.

Our youngest (9) has Down syndrome and one benefit is that it actually is like having him stay little longer - all the stages last longer so we really get to enjoy each one with the perspective of having seen the others grow up and out of each stage way too fast.

On an unrelated note - this sickness is KILLING me.  I can't get better.  My wife has had it a week longer than me and she's still a mess.  We can't breath, taste, smell, stand up, or stay awake.  I've tried running and even trainer rides, but it's a no go at this point.  If this lasts much longer I'm gonna cut my head off and be done with it!  /whine.

Yeah...I took a wrong turn on my hike today and ended up tacking on an extra mile and a half.  Oh well.  Sweating is a good thing.

Leaving for college?  That's just ridiculous!  My oldest is 10 and I dont even want to consider them leaving the house!  Not sure I would know what to do with myself!  Plus I would lose my companions for my long runs!  The kids love to ride their bike as I run.

I will hide from this thought as long as I can,  Denial is a wonderful thing!

Two things come to mind.  You have kids!?  You don't look a day over 20 in that avatar!

Secondly...you've already lost 30 lbs?  That's totally awesome dude!  Congrats.  Keep that up.

It seems everyone has weighed in on the kids thing.  And as with Jeff I tried the "stop feeding" thing too, but I also added bricks and concrete blocks on their shoulders too.  My last attempt, and vain as well, was to find and purchase a time machine to keep them home.

I am looking forward to watching them move into different growing areas of their life but I am not anxious to see it happen.  Time runs to fast and we get older faster, it seems.

On a training note, I ran 22 miles yesterday for my long run.  That brought me to 54 miles for the week and 158 for the month.  I am noticing my running efforts seem to be easier at a faster pace then they were at the beginning of my training marathon cycle.  For instance, my HR for much of my training was in 150-153 in the early stages, now it is 146-148 most of the time.  Obviously the weather has had an affect on this too.  The cooler temps over the past few weeks is making for a better environment to run in, but I can feel my fitness getting better and better.

I am beginning to gain confidence as I draw closer to my race.

How did you feel at the end of that 22 miler Dirk?  That's a serious training distance.  All those miles will absolutely show up during the marathon.  What's your BQ time?

Hah that's some good stuff, not a day over 20?  The picture is small enough it hides the flaws, I have 15yrs on that estimate!  As for the weight loss it has been kind of surprising.  I never went into this thinking to lose weight.  I didn't change my nutrition and still eat my McD's from time to time.  As of this morning I am now down to 195.  It almost seems reasonable to reach the weight of my 20yr old past (180)

Amazing story!  And Jonathon, kids get it when their parents get it, if you know what I mean.  My kids, I hope, understand giving back and not taking advantage of situations at the loss of others for their own personal gain.  I hope to have taught my girls many things before they leave the house on their own, not the least of which would be caring for others.  "Do to others as you would have then do to you" is a message I hope they get.

Pretty good initially, but after a little while I was feeling the adverse affects.  I don't think it was as much the added distance from that run as much as the overall distance throughout the week and poor post run nutrition, with the latter being the primary cause.  After my long runs I usually get some food and a strong dose of protein from Muscle Milk that I mix with a large glass of milk.  Yesterday I didn't have time.  My wife's birthday was yesterday and I hadn't gotten her a card yet (long story) so I needed to get one before she got home from work.  By the time I got home it was too late for me to get caught up to where I needed to be nutritionally and I began to crash.

In the end, I wish I had and time to get the proper nutrition and I think I would have been fine.  I usually don't suffer like I did after those runs because I know what I need to do.  If I had it to do all over again I would have not forgotten my watch at home and come home to get it, costing me the time I needed to be able to get food and the birthday card.

You just liked it because the kid was 6'5"!  But seriously, it's a great story and absolutely some kids still get it.  As Dirk says, hopefully you leave some of that with your kids.  But it has to come from your everyday living of those ideals, and not just a once in a while thing.  I bet that wasn't the first random act of kindness the kid from that story every did.

Took yesterday off from exercise to go visit the family.  Great to see them all.  I love my neice.  She must be the sweetest little kid I've ever met.  I'm not going to be lucky enough to produce one like her...but hopefully close.

Ran this morning.  Easy (as usual) 3.5 miles or so.  Shin felt only mildy uncomfortable and not the entire time.  I've been wearing calf sleeves/compression socks, which help a ton.  I've taped up my leg as well.  Hopefully all this will pay off and it will go away entirely.  Luckily I haven't been completely side-lined by it.  I'm going to try to bike on the trainer tomorrow for about an hour and then get a swim in.  Just the thought of biking indoors when I'm out here sucks....but then again, I don't want to lose it all before Jorge's cycling program kicks in.

Jeff...you around?  Don't let this shoulder thing depress you...I'm assuming you've hit the recumbant bike??

I wasn't thinking bout Jonathon liking it because the guy was tall, but more like now the "tall makes me slower" thing is no longer an excuse.  Now he has to get out and put those runs together.  LOL

In all seriousness, I hope the shin splints get better very soon.  The high mileage would REALLY help you guys get some speed going.  These past few months of 40+ mpw are really paying off for me and I know the payoff would be just as high if guys can put the time into it.

Speaking of speed, I did my last higher mileage Tempo run yesterday and it was pretty successful.  I added 1 mile to the tempo portion of the run which obviously added to the overall distance as well.  The run was 10 miles total including 1 WU and 1 CD, with 8 miles in the middle pouring on the coals.  It was a decent pace that was pretty hard but not too hard.  It was probably at a pace I could run a HM next season.  I will hope that is the case for a stand alone HM and then be a little slower for the HIM I am planning too.

Man, I would LOVE to run fast.  I actually enjoy running right now.  I will get there.  I'm not backing down.  WAY too stubborn for that!

Dirk, how do you judge when you're going to add miles to runs like that?  Just going by feel and experience?  I always want to add distance when I feel good, but obviously afraid that I'll be sore the next day or something.

Happy to hear you are enjoying running right now.  Getting miles in sure is easier when there is joy in it.  I just hope the shin issues disappear very soon for you.

As far judging when to pick up the tempo a little bit, it is just a feel thing mainly.  But, I have run several of these at 7 miles on the tempo pace and I would recommend getting a base for the higher speed runs prior to building on them.  As far as you specifically go, I would wait and make sure you don't have shin issues for a while before doing any speed work.  These runs can be fairly brutal while you're out doing them and the risk of injury is heightened as well.  A good running base, I think, is the hey first, then you can start hitting some harder efforts.  Forst, I would start out the intensity a little lower to allow your body to adapt to a more intense pace before a real hard run.

Tell me about patience Jonathan.  This virus is still kicking my butt, there’s so much garbage coming out of my lungs it’s scary.  I’ve been to the doc again and they say no pneumonia but that I just need to keep resting and recovering.  It’s been a little over two weeks now, and it’s driving me nuts.  My wife is still hacking up a lung every once in a while and she’s been over 3 weeks.  Luckily the kids are not really affected.

I have also come to love running over the past year.  It’s funny given that my wife was always a runner and whenever she tried to get me to join her I’d always tell her that running isn’t a sport, but it’s only PART of a real sport!  Now if I miss my running I’m a bear.  I can’t wait to get back after it.

I am really planning to get up to the 40+ mpw level this winter and maintain that as long as possible.  My plan is to build to that slowly with almost no speed work until I can be at that mileage for a while, maybe month or more.  I know the shorter the race the faster I am relative to the “norm” so I have to think that endurance is my limiter.  I’m at the age when “they” say you start to lose about 1-2% a year, but I’m also brand new to running and “they” also say you improve for 5-7 years no matter when you start.  I’d really like to get a sub 20 5k and a sub 1:40 HM at some point in my life.

Dirk, yeah, I am definitely not doing any speedwork.  I just mean that some days after 3 miles, I feel like I am just getting started and I could go forever.  I usually stop just because I don't want to aggravate my shins at all.  I did an easy run today and I could feel my leg start to twinge also.  Not sure what the deal is with these shins right now.  Tomorrow I'll be off my feet, in the pool.  I think adding stress to my legs even by biking on days that I don't run may not be smart.  I think they need time to heal.

Warren,  so they just tell you that you have a viral infection or something?  You hitting the vitamins and water like it's your job to flush that crap out?

I can't imagine doing 40 MPW.  I am sore in all sorts of little ways after 10 mpw!  Seriously....am I just not supposed to be running or what!?
