geauxtri - 2008-12-18 11:07 PM I realized today as well, that I can't recall ever doing a Christmas program in elem school (short of a band concert)
I went to my kindergartners school program today... boy was that borderline torture.

I cringe when I think of the ridiculous number of band and choir concerts/christmas pagents/sporting events that my poor parents sat through. Kind of amazing really.

Do you have a bunch of siblings ?

I have two younger siblings.  But just my events alone were enough - three sports, marching band, concert band...it's a long list.

I wonder how Phil feels about the Count, he sure hates Elmo - LOL!

Mom has been sweet enough to come support me at a few running races and one of my tris.  You'd think she's be like, "Dang, Emily.  You're 31.  I'm done coming to your silly events!"

She must love me or something.

she must indeed!

My parents came to support me in my second sprint, it was pretty great

I hope my kids become involved in stuff as adults that I can come and cheer them on - it's been so weird this year having nothing to go watch

thats very nice

My parents didn't come to much of my stuff after elementary school. My little sister had medical issues that kind of overloaded everyone and my other little sister was in gymnastics. She could basically do most of the stuff that you see in the olympics. My mom was really involved in that.

That's rough.

There's a big age gap between my siblings and myself.  I'm 9 years older than my brother and 13 (!!) years older than my sister.  So I was pretty much out of the house before they started getting into any activities.  The 'rents only had to do double duty when baby bro and baby sis were both doing things at the same time.

I struggled a lot with depression growing up. I don't think that I was involved in much at that time.  I was a gymnastics flop-I wasn't nearly flexible enough.   My sister continued gymnastics and I just hung around.  I recall that the college age gymnasts really liked country music.  Other memories include lots of vending machines and lots of chalk dust.

that sounds tough

as a parent I feel very fortunate, just the way things happened and the sports my kids were interested in, I have been able to equally divide the support

Well, looking back on it now, I wasn't involved or very interested in being involved in anything at the time.  What I needed were some good drugs...

My older siblings and I were very rebellious ... didn't want parents at things.

It was very lovely, though, when I became a Christian (rather appalling in my family, but they warmed up to it) I started changing my ways and asking my parents to be more involved in my life. My father was always very distant but even he came to a church musical when my mother had been in a bad accident and wasn't able to.

My mother started coming to *all* my things ... when I went on a college trip to Africa, I even dragged mum along to that The professor and all the students just loved her and still talk about her.

You've had a hard go of it in many ways, dear Melissa, even until now. It continues to amaze me that no matter what you throw yourself into things and over the hurdles--you insist on living beautifully.

I'll drag people along with me too-I took my little sister and mom with me to school a few weeks ago.  The only assignment for Thanksgiving Tue/Wed(besides studying for a test) was wreath making.  We had tons of greens and accents gathered from all over the campus and wreath machines set up in the cold greenhouse.  It was fun.

I wove some fancy twine into a lattice, but it was too heavy(visually) for the window.  I pulled it all apart and cleaned up.  I have set out some beading stuff.  I think that I will string some seed beads and just have a few long vertical lines for the peas to climb.

that's not lazy, that's efficient!

like when it's cold enough, I go grocery shopping before I go to the gym and then leave the groceries in the car - much more efficient

Ah ha ha ha, that's great.

One year we left the turkey out to finish thawing since it was fridge temperature ... but the next morning we let the dogs out and forgot it was there ... UH OH!!!! They were sure happy with the huge Christmas present they thought we got them!
