I have a cold :-(.  I hope I feel better by Sunday for my second tri.  Ryan (bigr82) and I are doing the Carlyle IL Sprint.

Good luck on Sunday!

Naps are always good for colds. Naps are good for just about anything.

I have a question that most likely been asked before. Looking for those seasoned people answer. After renting my first wetsuit I am looking to buy. I am debating sleeves or the john style. I left a shop where all they sell are with sleeves.  When asked about the sleeveless or john they proceeded to tell me that the reason is water get is the suit and of course here in Michigan its very cold water. They stated they are more buoyant (more neoprene more buoyant) and will be faster in the water. My reasoning for questioning is I am very wide across the shoulders and thick arms(not bragging just a fact) so maybe a sleeveless would be less restricting and wont be so tough getting my arms out.   full or sleeveless   lets get a count

Ok after hitting numerous place on the internet I am more convinced full wetsuit is the way to go but still would love feedback from someone who does the sleeveless style.

I have a full wet suit but I have skinny arms.  I could see it being restrictive if you have big guns.

I have a sleeveless. The water I have used it in has been upper 60's to low 70's and it doesn't bother me much. Once I get moving I don't notice it. I think it's really a personal preference as much as it is water temp thing.

Morning everyone!  What's on tap for today?  I'm going to my neice's wedding then out to the race site for packet pickup and a pre-race meeting.  I might try to get in a lake swim.

My cold has progressed to include a sore throat.  I'm not sure if mysoreness is from tiling the mantle base Wednesday night or the cold.  100% effort for the sprint tomorrow  probably won't yield 100% output.

Got a 40 mile bike ride in this morning. Now that's 40 miles of trail riding and just got back in time(barley)to pickup the girlfriend from the airport.

Anyway hope you get to feeling a little better before the race.  After wards you taking some much needed rest or you gonna keep pushing?  Look forward to hearing the results from you and BigR82 after.

Nice ride today but I would have been more impressed if you showed up at the airport on your bike.

For the life of me, I can't remember where you are located but for some of the races around here (like the one next week) a full sleeve is almost a necessity because the water is in the mid-50's.  I know that Rudedog55 (Rudy) used to use a sleeveless for the same reason that you were considering one.  He made the switch to a full sleeve last year and seemed happy with it.  I'll send him a message for you and see if he has any other thoughts.

Now that's funny.  I don't think her boss would have been happy. I didn't realize I was picking her Boss up also.

Went to an Xterra Tri today and there were quite a few people with sleeveless. I am convinced that its a personal preference. After wearing the full now I will rent a john and base which one feels better. The first triathlon I was too focused to pay attention to others, now I am more comfortable and want to see what others are doing.

My sleeveless Xterra showed up while we were gone, and am looking forward to trying it out. When we swam couple of weeks ago in the bay, water temp was supposedly hovering at 60, and most folks went sleeveless. The least hardy said they were freezing standing still, but OK once they got going. One guy wore a compression shirt under his which he said added some warmth. Others rec'd booties for colder water, but consensus was it was a personal preference thing. Most w/ sleeves seemed to opt for that bc they tended to be cold, or were less confident in the water & wanted all the buoyancy they could get. As I said in my earlier posts, I hated the restrictiveness of my full suit that day, and the pulling at my neck, and I don't mind (relative) cold.

Xterra's been GREAT to deal with. I'd tried the WL Vortex3 full suit - apparently they redesigned it to enlarge the neck, and after some email consultation have sent me a WL (new/improved) sleeveless Vortex3, and WXL full Vortex3. Haven't tried either yet. They offered to send me anything I wanted. Encouraged me to try all, and return what didn't work. Even said pool try-out would be OK once or twice since my OW access is limited during the week.

Our water temps may not be as cold as yours, but my biggest concern in getting the sleeveless from the get-go was that I'd regret it on a cold day. I know now, though, that I can also add a shirt underneath, or sleeves, headgear, and/or booties for additional warmth. And, I'd rather risk being a little too cold than a little too hot when water temps are approaching upper limits - I hate being hot.

Here's a link to a wetsuit temperature guide if it'd be helpful: http://360guide.info/wetsuits/water-temperature-chart.html?Itemid=1... .

Happy shopping!

meant to ask if you saw the BT discount code for buying one, too? There's usually one floating around on the website.

Just picked up my john (gotta love how that sounds Innocent) from my neighbor, who couldn't stop laughing at the visual of me wearing it after I explained what it was....

all of the above! Doing the clinic on Saturday, and 1 mile swim on Sunday, and then the 5k with my daughter on Monday. 1st OWS other than the paddling around we did a few weeks ago, and 1st 5k. Not really nervous about those except when thinking about how I choked (literally & figuratively, lol) in that OWS with the full wetsuit.

That OWS experience was a big reality check for me, too... I think I've been taking the swimming piece for granted (that is, thinking it'd be the easy part), and not really appreciating how different an experience it'll be to be racing in a lake...raced in pools as a kid, and have swum in lakes forever, but never put the 2 together. I'm feeling most nervous about not having put more miles on my bike, but that's mostly due to scheduling issues & not finding many places close by where I feel safe riding on the road...so, need to lower my expectations for my 1st race and remember that my goal has always been to finish & not to worry about being competitive.

Thanks Marla.  After yesterday, the Xterra race has me worked up. The course caught a lot of people off guard, specially the bike. (Trails) More than a few crashes. After all that 90% of the people I talked to said they will do it again

ironannekidd - 2010-05-24 5:54 AM Good morning everyone!

How did the races go this weekend?

The race went well.  I did much better on the OWS than last weekend, but the best part had to be racing with a fellow BT'er.  The race was really well run and it was a very nice course, nice pre/post race set up, etc.   It was a bit hot, but I think I prefer that over 50 degrees and raining.  Running across a dam twice in 85+ degrees heat was brutal.  I was really glad I wasn't doing the Oly.

I'll do a race report/blog soon.
