razorxp - 2011-02-17 11:19 AM Great job Keith and Tim

Amen, good stuff.  I did my first outdoor run last night with the club in their kickoff get-back-into-shape program.  Lots of folks grunting.  I felt grand, did 5 miles.  Ran well.  Unsure of the pace - Garmin wasn't charged like it should have been.  But it was pretty good.  Came in just behind a kid on the high school xcountry team.  He may have been dogging it, and I was humping, but I was happy. The young have such an easy gait.  Envious.  Isn't it funny how it takes so much work to learn a running form I took for granted as a kid?

Swam this morning...speed work and drills.  Hard high cadence high power bike workout for 90 mins after work.

Can't remember if it was an articel or video but I remember one coach saying that he has his swimmers work out math problems while swimming - keeps your mind sharp and helps you stay focused.  Ever since reading that I always try to calculate my pace or some type of thinking problem while swimming.  Not really sure if it helps but I do it anyway -haha

if i did a math problem i would never be able to keep up with my laps.  i try to think of anything to pass the time.  lately i have been thinking of a friend of mine that has a few months to live battling cancer.  i think of how lucky i am to be able to be swimming.

i did my first brick today.  2 hrs on bike and then 1 hr run.  it was tough for me but i finished.  the second hour on the bike i road outside. it was great but harder due to having to finally use stabalizing muscles.  i also must have looked back about every three minutes looking for cars.  luckily only about three passed me.

here is a question... since i am new to outdoor road biking.  is it harder to ride hills where you hurt going up and fly going down or flat terrain?

Overall it was a great session.  Let me put in a plug for Melinda Yelton out of Charlotte, NC.  Her company is Trijinx. And if you ever get to Charlotte and want to throw down a swim, I can think of no better place than the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.

I would say they count.
Can you share the drills with us?

Its funny because I live in a very flat area outside of Chicago so all my training rides are flat and I mostly deal with wind.  All of the triathlons I have done have had crazy hills. I almost like the hills becasue you get a little bit of a breather on the downhills.  When I did Branson 70.3 in the Ozarks there were some 1/2 mile downhills where i would get going almost 50 MPH.  It was nice because I was able to give my legs a little breather and I was also able to pass alot of people on the hills.

I guess they both have their pros and cons but I like the challenge and variety of a hilly course - probably because I only ride flat.

Here are some pics fromt eh Branson bike course last year.  Almost 7000 ft. of climbing.

kdevarenne - 2011-02-17 10:27 AM Mid 40's this morning, so I decided to go for my first outdoor run of 2011!  I did 10k (51:51) and my legs felt really strong on the uphills, no fatigue!  My route is flat with downhills out, flat with uphills back.  My last mile is uphill, and usually takes me about 10 minutes to do it, today only took 9!  All the tips and motivation this group is putting out there is working!  Off to the pool.  Hopefully the swim is as good as the run.

Way to go Keith - nice work - hope the pool treated you well.

Nice day Jason.

I live in the flattest area ever and wish I had hills to ride on. I am guessing that riding on hills has got to be better then just flat all the time.

The only math I am doing is - ONE STROKE - TWO STROKE - THREE STROKE - BREATH LOL. If I had to have anything else in my head (besides the 1000 stroke technique thoughts) I would sink! In all seriousness though, I am trying to get thoughts out of my head. I am like a beginner golfer with way to many swing thoughts in my head only in this case they are swim thoughts.

I am thinking about getting an underwater music listening device to help relax me though. Does anyone in here use one and if so do you have any recommendations on what I should buy?

Thanks.

OK - Hey Team.

Hope you are all having a great day - looks like a few of you are having some great success today.

Got in the pool today and did a short bike - enjoyed them both.

Back in the water tomorrow morning for a lap swim at 7 am, off to work and then leaving for a few days to visit my sister and her family in Huntsville Ontario for some skiing.  I might even catch one of those hangover viruses that occasionally go around on fun filled family weekends.

Later.

I would stay away from that - but thats just my own opinion.  You really need to be in tune with your breathing and its hard with music playing in your ears.  You are probably doing the right thing with the counting.  You get to a point where you could probably swim the length of a pool with your eyes closed and know exactly where the edge is.  Same thing with running and breathing.  I use headphones only on runs over 2 hours just to help pass the time but I keep the volume extremely low so I can hear thing approaching still. Biking is self explanatory.  But to each his own...

Heck yea they count but they are defiantly different as they are more organized in the swim (not as much contact) and the bike/run can vary allittle depending on how accurate they are calibrated.   My 1st race is 1/3 indoor as the swim starts inside then you bike/run outdoors.

I like your coach, I don't do swim golf (way too many things to think about)

Oh - she loves swim golf.  Only after she saw my technique did she determine that I didn't need to do it.

Hills do hurt, as sometimes you push harder than you want just to get up.  But overall you wattage should be similar just much differnt speeds.  Just like going into the wind.  There have been a couple hill on IM course that I push over 500 watts just to go 5-7mph.  Those burn the heck out of the legs.

I love the swim mp3 player.  I don't really want to concentrate on swimming, I have to zone out in order to swim long distances.

With the sprints unless you are absolutely punishing your body I know people that do OLY races every weekend.  Just depends on how you recover.

Rob, I misunderstood the golf comment.  You will get it down quickly if working with a good coach.

The Ozarks are pretty duriing the day...but I HATE driving them at night.  Last time I did was 15 years ago and they didn't have the reflectors in the roads.  It sometimes looked like the traffic going the other way was actually on your sde of the road!  Almost a harrowing experience at times.  And I don't freak out easily.

I might be making a name or so up on the first one, but I hope to be able to explain...

"Stacked kicking" - swimming on your back with your hands to your side.  Kick "lying flat" and then turn your hips to the right so that your left leg is "stacked" on top of your right.  Do this without turning your shoulders much.  Return to the original position and then switch to the left side.  It's supposed to give you the rotational feeling you should get when swimiming freestyle.

Kickboard tap - I had problems with this.  You are to hold a kickboard between your legs and after executing the pull, tap the kickboard with your hand.  This forces rotation of the hips.  It was a breeze when I was breathing, but not so much when I wasn't.

Modified Catch-up - Not sure where I read it but in the catch-up drills I read, I picked up the bad habit of crossing my hands too much in front of my head.  She told me to picture a stick in my hand about shoulder width in length and imagine grabbing the end of it.  That's where my hand should be.

Thanks for the drills - I will try them - the stacekd kicking sounds like the TI sweek sport drill (kind of) and I sometimes use a kick board to hold in front of me when doing catch up so my hands do cross over?

As far as checking out your competition - great idea and exactly what I would do - I love it!

Good Morning Team.

I did not get to the pool as planned this morning. I had to get an early start at work and then off to do a little sking. I have a 5 hour drive ahead of me this afternoon but if I can I am either going for a run tonight or I will check out the hotel pool and see what I can accomplish in there if it is not packed with kids.

Have a great weekend everyone.

I for one can definitely say that travel can completely screw up training plans.  I think I need to travel smarter down the road.  Good luck with the pool.

Wow - that's really bad!

Haha kidding. I do almost the same thing. I find the previous years results, and see roughly where I would place on a good day. If I know someone who is in a race with me, I might be tempted to look up their times. They normally are waaaay ahead of me, but whatever! I like to look.
