You need it.I'm updating my race post with my target time which is what I did last year (back then it was my new PR). I'm shooting to equal or even improve my time for this race, since it is a tough HM with over 1000 ft of climbing. It will be great to see how all the IM/smarter training comes into play compared to my performance last year.
Yes, I'm counting on all you racers taking your day off BEFORE and AFTER the races...I'm not racing in January so I need my minutes to keep flowing so I can continue to sniff that podium! |

Don't think I'd need one before. This is a 5k trail run. They just posted, saying that the trail is 15% covered in slick ice, and that it is recommended that you have micro spike if you want to have fun, screw spikes if you plan to race. I am going to talk to Scott tonight about doing the race all together because of that. I don't have either, but planned on getting yaktrax anyway or something similar. |

I'll keep working on a good base, actually Saturday I'm doing a 70 mile ride with some fast dudes, I need to put work looking at the long term. I love running races but I don't want to run myself down trying to go fast when I don't have it in me. |

Why are you restricting calories as opposed to just carbs? I agree we both needed to lose weight, but we don't need to lose it all in one month. When I proposed the challenge, one option I gave was instead of seeing who lost the most weight, who got closest to a reasonable one month weight loss, like four or five pounds. |

The fact that you are out in it is impressive! As for my race. Scott and I have been talking and he was thinking that I shouldn't run it but told me to run it by you all. 1. I want to run a good time to see where I truly am and to get race experience. 2. This 5k is on a trail that is covered in ice up to 15% 3. Recommended shoe attire.. Trail shoes and spikes (I have old running trail shoes but NO spikes) 4. Scott mentioned that if I have a slow performance I will dwell on it and beat myself up over what I should have done different, or what would my time have been with better ground conditions. (I can say I won't but he's right...I will) 5. Scott thinks I should just hold out for another... On the 28th there is a 4M and an 8M race. Either would be cool to do! 6. Tomorrow Scott and I are officiating at a track meet at the Academy. I can go to Boulder on Sat and go through the training (Scott already did) to become a certified official. Otherwise I have to wait until next year, but I still get to go to all the meets here this year and gain the experience. So what do you all think? |

Regular 200 Colorado Springs | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (third season) - CLOSED I was supposed to run an hour tonight but work consipired against me and I left work pretty late. I went out for a refreshing night run that was warm by comparison to Chris' chilly run. I managed 4.34 miles in 44:36 (7:45/mile pace at an avg HR of 147). Probably not a bad idea for a shorter run anyways considering I'll be getting up early to go do hill repeats on the treadmill tomorrow morning. Ernesto....smart move to listen to your body re the race this weekend. I've lost count of how many races I've bailed on knowing my body wasn't up to it. I'm still looking at race calendars so I'm not prepared to commit to a particular race coming up. - Gabe 12 days 25:47:50" |

Jen, do you have access to an indoor (or outdoor) track at the academy or somewhere else? If so, I would just plan on doing a 5K test at a track in order to gage your current level of fitness. Then you could do the trail race if you choose to do it, but for the fun factor without having to worry about your time, or you could skip it like Scott wisely advised so you don't get frustrated, and just do one of the other alternatives you mention are going to be fun.

Yes we do and that was something Scott was suggesting. The indoor track (the one we will be at tomorrow is small). I will have access to it with Scott during lunch time. The problem with a 5k in that is it requires 18.75 laps... That is going to be a mentally draining option but at least I have that option. I may just need to do it. At least it's controlled and no hills! |

Maple Grove, MN | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (third season) - CLOSED Hey all! I forgot to mention what happened during my run. As usual, my run http://connect.garmin.com/activity/141172733 was along the Mississippi in downtown Minneapolis. As I was nearing the end of my run (so it was just after dark) a small fox scampers right across the path in front me! Again, this is in downtown Minneapolis. Tall buildings and so forth. |
