Veteran 330 Denton | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Originally posted by slornow Michael-hate to hear about the crash. Be cautious in pushing too hard getting back to training. I suspect you will be even more sore and stiff tomorrow. Something I found that really does a good job on road rash is tegaderm bandages. They are waterproof and hold up well for a day or more. The material is what they use to hold in IV lines and such. Glad you are not injured worse. Scott-solid work in the race. You are right about swimming in the ocean. What looks like a small wave or swell looks and feels really big when you are down there swimming. Randy, I actually sat for about 2 hours and researched how to treat these abrasions and the majority suggests tegaderm to be the best. I went out and bought a few packages. So far they have been working pretty good. I am feeling pretty good today. I mean the road rash hurts but I am not very sore anywhere else. I will take it easy for another day or two. I know swimming will be out for probably two weeks but there is nothing I can do about that. The only good thing about the crash ... a NEW helmet :-) |

New user 166 Fernley, NV | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Sounds like everyone had a decent weekend, with the exception of Michael, sorry to here about the crash but from the sounds of it you came out of it pretty well. Congrats everyone on their races, and all the race reports were a great read. I had a run bike run brick on Saturday, the first run went well, I really tried to hammer on the bike and felt good the second run however, wow my calf totally crampped at about a mile and a half and just could not get it worked out. ended up walking/hobbeling the last 1/2 mile, turns out I was really dehydrated so I need to work on that. |

Member 149 Hudson Valley Region | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Originally posted by wannabefaster I had a pretty darn good weekend of training despite the 90+ degreee temperatures (I know that is nothing for Randy but up here in MI we start to melt in that kind of heat). I am still having some issues with my neck and a couple bulging discs. It has been doing so well for so long that I thought my neck issues were behind me. But now I am scheduled for an MRI with possible need for "curative measures." Not excited. I've had bulging disks in my neck for about 18 years now. The swimming I started as rehab for them (and the shoulder injury that possibly caused them) is what got me started in triathlon. I hope you can get yourself sorted out. Literal pains in the neck are no fun :-) |

Extreme Veteran 692 England | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Hey guys. Sounds like we had some really impressive racing this weekend. I've got all the race reports open in tabs so I'll be working my way through them. I finally got my Outlaw race report done. We had some internet problems last week (when I'd got about half way through) and I really didn't fancy trying to finish it on my iPhone! Michael - you have my sympathies for the road rash. I'm there with you, just a week ahead. I don't know if you can get them over there, but after my crash last year a friend recommended hydrocolloid dressings for road rash. I used them last year, and am using them again this time round. They allow moist wound healing, which I think means the wounds heal a little faster and also with less scarring. My shoulder is the most extensive wound (about 9 inches across and 4 inches high) and I think the skin will be completely intact in another day or two. I've also found hydrocolloid gel here (which wasn't available last year) and it's helped the minor scrapes heal really fast. I've spent the last week doing absolutely nothing energetic and it's finally taking it's toll. I'm getting the aches I generally associate with not training... Unfortunately I can't swim till my skin is intact again (hopefully soon), and I've also bruised my big toe nail badly enough that walking is very painful, so running is definitely out. I could probably do some gentle cycling, but my bike is still at the shop having it's post-crash health check (they had to order in the bar tape I wanted - I'm hoping there's nothing more serious wrong with it). I need to get the road bike out and dust it off, but I don't really know how to get back into training after such a big race. Anyone got any tips? I'm still pretty tired, but I also don't want to just sit on the sofa and turn into a blimp. I'm contemplating putting another race into the calendar for September, but haven't quite decided which one yet. |

Still pretty exhausted from the past few weeks. Short runs and rides and that is about it. Debating what to do for my tri next weekend... Melissa...I now have this image of Pee Wee Herman (Patrice Herman, perhaps?) riding through the mountains on his red and white bike (complete with handlebar streamers) with a front basket full of Ironman fuel. What a great race report. |

I'm contemplating putting another race into the calendar for September, but haven't quite decided which one yet. After IM, I take a full two weeks off from anything SBR. If the body is up for it, I spend time hiking, doing cross training like TRX and walking the dog. I then add SBR back in, but only do what I want with no real training or Garmin to be a slave to. After a month I begin focusing on the Fall running season which is my favorite of the three sports so it keeps me jazzed. Do lots of 10Ks, maybe a half marathon just to have some goals. |

Some are totally obvious but others keep me wondering..... If you are comfortable doing so, let us know the genesis of your online "handle." wannabefaster means what it says. I want to be faster. It predates triathlon for me by quite a few years. I used to drive cars really fast (on the track, not on the roads) and created it back in the late 90s. It was actually my email address for quite a few years but hasn't been for a long time. I occasionally think about changing my user name to, Jason A, but I am not quite ready to give up wannabefaster. |

Member 149 Hudson Valley Region | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED When I was a freshman in college I'd usually schedule my classes for the morning so I'd be done by lunch. My roommates were usually still asleep when I got back. So, one day I walk into my dorm room and one of my roommates, who is sleeping as usual, leans up on his elbow, looks at me and says clear as day, "third station." Then, he gives a satisfied nod and goes back to sleep. I asked him about it later and he had no recollection. Weird. I've used it ever since for various stuff. I needed a name to use for my first hotmail account, and someone suggested chapfallen. It's a word from Hamlet that means "downhearted". I think he was trying to say something about me, but I missed it at the time. And now it's kind of ironic. I still use it as my personal email. |

I am the golf princess. Back in 1998, I stopped riding horses competitively (something I'd.done for 20 years) and needed a new hobby. I took up golf and played a lot. The ladies' leagues are all during the work day, so I always ended up playing golf with a bunch of guys. One afternoon, there were 15 of us heading to the tee box and one of them said, "Lead the way, Princess of Golf.". It stuck. I also ended up marrying a guy who is a professional Tour caddie, so it sort of fits. I also still play quite a bit of golf. Edited by glfprncs 2013-07-16 3:24 PM |

More details on your husband....who does he caddie for???? Nobody 'famous.' He's on the web.com tour, still looking to break into the main PGA Tour. He's had two bosses this year (caddies seem to be pretty dispensible when you're not playing very well), James Sacheck (who only has conditional status on tour) and Tom Hogue. What's interesting is that we live in a lower middle class neighborhood and Scott Brown, who has won just under a million dollars this year, lives 4 houses up the street. I don't know that they'll be here much longer. |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Good morning all-busy day at work so was at the pool at 5am to get my swim in. Hate getting up that early for a swim but feels so good to get it out of the way. Track intervals this evening. Anybody racing this weekend? Question for the group. How much attention due you pay to your USAT ratings after races? Do you check just to see what it is? Never check/don't care? Or, check regularly? For those of you that may not have known that you received a USAT "score" for each race here is the link: http://membership.usatriathlon.org/RNK_Ranking_Report_wrapper.aspx Enjoy the day! |

Randy, I don't follow it at all, partly because I find the site so frustrating to use. I clicked on the link, entered info in to all of the fields and it seems incapable of producing any result for me. Maybe I am doing something wrong but I just find the USAT site too frustrating to use. Last result I can find for me on their site is IMAZ, almost nine months ago..... Maybe it is a race director reporting issue. I don't know. |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED Jason-I agree that the rankings site is a mess. You may not have anything posted yet for 2013 as it typically takes several weeks or more for the USAT to get the results then run them through the computer to generate the ratings. My races from June 1 and June 9 and not posted yet. I don't use the ratings/rankings for showing whether I may be faster or slower than another racer but more as a year to year metric to see if I am improving. The USAT formula for computing the ratings is odd and much depends on who is racing in a particular event. I've had some of my lower ratings in races where I felt like I raced really well. I take it all with a grain of salt. But, I do use it to set some annual goals. Edited by slornow 2013-07-17 9:24 AM |

Extreme Veteran 990 Collierville, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Slornow's and Wannabefaster's Summer Mentor Group - CLOSED I've never really looked at the rankings; it just seems too abstract for me to focus on at this point. Now, Nate and I have talked about trying to make a run at doing well in our local tri series put on by SetUp Events. They do a series ranking, and that would be cool to chase because you'd have people to rank yourself against after every race. |
