Thanks a bunch for the prayers!!!!! I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!!!! My plan is to do a long run tomorrow, and a ride Sunday with the team if weather permits... Question: What's everyones opinion on swimming. What is the most important part? How do you feel you can build speed and stamina? What was the most important thing you have learned and how did you learn it? ie: coach, video etc... Just want to pick your brains a bit, you never know what little tidbit can help you out. Have a great evening. I'm going to have alone time with my husband and a Captain Morgans Spiced Rum with Coke Zero....ha Emerson - have your travels ever brought you to Evansville Indiana? Ooops, gotta run it's time to go pick-up my son at track practice... Love from Indiana...Amy About swimming, most important things in this order. 1. Balance. Without proper balance, it's like dragging dead weight through the water. Gotta press your chest into the water and get your legs up. 2. Glide. Let your body glide in between strokes. 3. Front Quadrant Swimming. Do catchup drills - lots of em. I'm still working on this, but the stroke is so much easier when I get it right. 4. The catch. This is the key to speed. The more water you catch, and the faster you accelerate your hands through the water, the faster you go. Still working on this too. I got 1 and 2 from Total Immersion. 3 and 4 are in TI, but I've needed a coach to get them right. My last tri (2 weeks ago) was the first time I didn't freak out in the water and get totally exhausted, so I've come a long way. Greg p.s. Have a Cap'n and Zero for me too! |

I am anal about such things, so I don't want ot take them if there is risk. I'm not putting all the ingredients, but here are the ones in question. Plant-Derived Ensymes, Soy Extract, Kudzu Extract??????????????????? What do you think? Amy - two questions.... 1) Do you have any family members who had a hormone-related cancer? 2) Do you have any family members with thyroid-related problems? I asked the first because if the answer is yes, then you may want to avoid plant-estrogens, such as soy extract. (I'm not familar with kudzu extract, but I'll look it up in a few minutes.) In my case, my cancer wasn't hormone-fueled, but I have a family member who did have a hormone-related cancer. So my oncologist has told me to avoid soy and plant extracts. I asked the second question because soy can interfere with thyroid function. People who have hypothyroidism and are taking thyroid hormones (such as Synthroid) should avoid soy, as it can interfere with the absorption of the medication. If you don't have a family history of either hormone-fueled cancers, and there's no family history of thyroid problems.... then you could probably take the OTC products safely. (* Keep in mind that I'm not a physician. I'm just going on information that I've read and the advice that several doctors have given me. *) |

Just want to pick your brains a bit, you never know what little tidbit can help you out. I have hired a coach to teach me to swim better. The key was form. If you "slice" through the water with little drag, then have an efficient stroke, it takes less effort to cover more distance... I saw my video.... It was SOOOOO ugly. I am working totally on form at the moment, then the workouts will bring the stamina and speed... Food for thought... Emerson |

Master 1303 Mishicot, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: medic0020's Group - CLOSED--BUSTIN AT THE SEAMS I'm a self taught swimmer...except for early lessons when I was a youngin. I coach myself and try to improve my stroke based on what I read. I don't really recommend this. It isn't easy and I will probably end up joining a swim team after I settle out of college. Good luck! PS... everyone is right... doing the stroke correctly is key! |

Emerson - We go to Louisville several times a year, my Husbands home office for the company he works for is there. We are going there in two weeks to do the Derby Mini Marry, and I will be there for the IMKY to cheer on some of my local team members. We will get together sometime this summer, I'm looking forward to it. |

Champion 23360 Taser-World | Subject: RE: medic0020's Group - CLOSED--BUSTIN AT THE SEAMS amy mutz - 2008-04-12 10:38 AM Dee - I don't have any family members with any of the above problems. But I'm just going to play it safe and not take it, I consider it an unnecessary risk. Thank you for the information. Much appreciated! My mom had hormone-related cancer. She was told to avoid any plant-based products, even those that are over-the-counter. Have you had your hormone levels (including FSH) tested? That might give you a good indication as to what's going on. I've read (and experienced) that if FSH is high, the flashes are worse. Basically, it works like this: 1) Estrogen levels drop. 2) the brain tries to tell the ovaries to increase their production of estrogen. It does this by sending out a "signal," which is a hormone called FSH. 3) in pre-menopausal women, FSH causes the ovaries to produce more estrogen. As estrogen goes up, the level of FSH goes down.... However, if the ovaries are not able to produce estrogen, the level of FSH continues to rise. The result is a hot flash. So monitoring both estrogen and FSH levels can provide an indication of what's going on in the body. The good news is that, eventually, FSH goes down. At this point, the hot flashes lessen and/or go away. Edited by D001 2008-04-12 11:56 AM |

Extreme Veteran 504 Tucson, AZ | Subject: RE: medic0020's Group - CLOSED--BUSTIN AT THE SEAMS After and easy two hour drive north and great suggestions from Julie on where to park and meet here we go...
Julie found us and we have a few moments to catch up. We had a chance to share some good hugs and a wonderful smiles and she took off to rejoin her family. We went onto watch for Mike after the bike transition... Sadly, we had to leave before Mike got to our point, but it was amazing to meet our dear friend and cheer so many amazing athletes on. I am inspired!!!! I think Amy of IN is planning to volunteer at IMKY in Louisville and I now wish to join her if my travel schedule permits... It was hot, magnificent and we got to meet a dear friend... Now that is a great day!!!! As of this posting, Mike is still gutting it out... We can track him at: http://www.ironmanlive.com/events/ironman/arizona/?show=tracker&y=2008 He is bib # 2400 It looks like the run is pretty tough, but it looks like he could walk it out and still make his victory. He is in our prayers at this moment!!! |

I know he's not in this forum, but because we know Julie I feel like he's one of our friends/relatives too. When I got back from Austin last night, the first thing I did was check this forum and the Ironmanlive website to check on Mike and another friend.
