I'm lazy-

instead of taking semi-perishable items back down to the fridge I just set them in my window sill. They stay plenty cold there and it is within reach of my bed.

that's not lazy, that's efficient!

like when it's cold enough, I go grocery shopping before I go to the gym and then leave the groceries in the car - much more efficient

Nice...I will leave some of them in the car overnight if I have a bunch that needs to come in.

Ah ha ha ha, that's great.

One year we left the turkey out to finish thawing since it was fridge temperature ... but the next morning we let the dogs out and forgot it was there ... UH OH!!!! They were sure happy with the huge Christmas present they thought we got them!

Now, that's funny!

It will be much more subtle than the natural twine...whatever.

I will have one strand every inch and a half secured at the top and the bottom.  The area is about 30" long.  I already put a bunch of little eye screws in a 1"x2" board and ran a chain along the inside of the top of the window.  I just need to string the beads and secure them.

LOLOLOL!

Nope, but seeing the two dogs bloated, waddling and stuffed full of MY Christmas turkey which it was impossible to replace (no places open on Christmas Day), the thought did occur to me.

My brother in-law(Jared Wiley) grew up in Indonesia. The family had a few dogs throughout his childhood-If one got off the missionary compound it was never seen again. His father, Wally Wiley, is head of Mission Aviation Fellowship in Indonesia.

Jared and my sister are headed there for the holidays. They will be spending the beginning of the new year on the beach spear-fishing for their meals. They will most likely be eating a good deal of lobster.

oh-Jared is from Papua. They were both there during the tsunami, but had just headed up into the mountains to hang out with some petite locals that Jared was friends with. They didn't come down until a week after...and were shocked.

I know the organization well. No doubt there are people he and I both know. If I thought really hard and traced some steps, it's very likely I know him, too!

What a small world!

But it's true about the dogs.

We had lots of dogs growing up. All highly trained Dobermans. I loved them and they were all very close to me. This explains a lot about my canine characteristics.

The tsunami is something I still have difficulty talking about. I landed in Indonesia the morning the tsunami hit--was one of the last planes into Jakarta airport before they shut it down for a while.

I remember ... so many terrible things.

The car seems to - at random - start and then die on first starts after sitting a bit. It starts on the 2nd try. Since its bumper to bumper, I want them to check it out.

It certainly doesn't hurt to take it in.   bummer.  Hopefully they are quick.  The first time I took my car in was to replace the driver's side mirror.  Embarassed  I was backing up a steep driveway that I was not familiar with in the dark.  There were large shrubs on one side and a rockery on the other.  My car is a manual trans.  It turns out that the main trunk on one of the shrubs was right at the edge of the driveway.

I'm sorry-I brought up something painful.

I don't have emotional ties to Indonesia like you do.  I saw some pictures/video and heard a bit about it from Jared.  He dropped his college classes and went back to assist.  He speaks the language fluently.  They would drop him in smaller inaccessible villages and he would work with the people to distribute supplies and clear small runways for cesnas to bring in more aid.

I guess that I am good at compartmentalizing things (just like a tree).  I stay somewhat withdrawn from things that are emotionally painful.  I'm not sure how to explain it, but it is a defensive mechanism I've developed over the years.

That is incredibly cute.

Isn't there any way you can keep him? I mean, you both are growing attached ... and clearly he adores you guys ...

I just spent $100 replacing my laptop adapter cord that he destroyed. Quite frankly, I am VERY unhappy about that.

He destroys mail. He destroyed a Netflicks CD.

He still is spotty about housetraining.

I am so not a dog person, neither is The Blonde. The problem is - she feels guilty. She's afraid that if 'he doesn't go the right house, he'll back on the street or a kill shelter.'

She has no backyard to keep him in. That means coming home 2x a day to let him out. She can't install a dog door as the cats are indoor ones, and the cats both hate the dog.

The first mistake she made, IMHO, was bringing both home. She could've said she found 'em in Rancho, and dropped them off at the Sac SPCA, which has a no kill policy. They would have found good homes.

This is such a nightmare to me, it reminds me of the situation in my last marriage where stray animals were brought home, including two sickly horses that died and cost me a f*cking fortune to feed and then dispose of.

Right now, I'm staying in the relationship because my children are coming in a little over a week and I had been planning since before he arrived to have them here at The Blonde's where I'm living. But if he doesn't go soon, I will be going.

Bummer.  I hope the next few weeks go reasonable smoothly and that you have a great visit with the kids.

No, not at all. Anyone who was there has difficult memories, and my family and I all assisted in relief. My brother in particular worked some miracles in getting supplies there quickly since the government was beyond ineffectual in responding, and frankly, the areas were so devastated it was nearly impossible to bring things in.

I used to have such defenses, but in the last few years I've gradually traded them for ... something different. I feel everything very intensely and am in the process of reorganizing/therapizing things so that it's more manageable.
