Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() peggyf - 2011-06-29 5:47 PM So my husband told me he thinks I need more "balance." Hmmmm I guess being a training fool over the summer is a bit out of whack? (Of course, it doesn't do much good for me to ask ya'll's opinion because you're all just as crazy as I am!) How silly. If you didn't have balance, you wouldn't be able to ride so much! |

I hear ya sister!!!! Balance...WTF is that???? I hear that too - I mostly ignore it - or say I could be fat and die at 50 like my Dad!!! that usually helps my situation some....Yeah, the only balance I need is the kind to do a flying start on the bike with shoes attached...now that's balance in my mind! |

Hmmmm I guess being a training fool over the summer is a bit out of whack? (Of course, it doesn't do much good for me to ask ya'll's opinion because you're all just as crazy as I am!) I admit that this sucks (I WISH my wife would tell me I need more balance!!) but maybe you should ask why he thinks that something is out of whack. It could be something as simple as he feels like you love your bike more than him so you'll have to give him a little more attention when you aren't training. For instance, I recently learned my wife resented the fact that I would always tell her I was planning to train after work so she couldn't make any sort of dinner (or other) plans for us. Her irritation would only multiply when I would then decide not to work out, hence why I am trying to move to mornings and have promised we can try to have dinner together at 7:30 each night. Then again, if he's just being an butt-face or saying things because he's starting to think you're getting to hot and athletic for him, you have our permission to smack him around a little bit. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Balance shmalance.......I'm with Wilson! Balance is getting a running start on the bike w/shoes already attached!! It is also fitting all 3 sports into the week and still have time to complete the 3 S's, hang with the kids, speak to my husband once or twice and feed everyone 5 days a week.... Do men start feeling threatened maybe when they think we will replace them w/an inanimate object?! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LMAO - I knew I'd get responses like this from you guys!! You're every bit as crazy as I am. I like the idea of the balance of being able to do a flying start with my bike!! It's not just the working out, though, it's my time on the computer -- which he's probably right about. So I'll try in that area -- but the training isn't gonna change much. I'm with you Wilson, I could go back to being 60 lbs overweight and not able to do much. So I'll just keep up my schedule and try to include him when possible - like on yesterday's 28 mile bike ride. Of course, it was supposed to be a recovery ride for me cuz my legs were trashed from running intervals and spinning class the day before - but he wanted to push it so most of the time he was riding way ahead of me - so much for together time! He only works out a couple of times a week so he can afford to push it -- In my case, I have to "balance" my training (lol)! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Taper question: I'm doing an oly a week from Sunday in TN. Wed we'll drive up so I won't do anything that day. How much should I taper? On Sun 7/3 I was going to do a long run (I'm up to 6) with Danielle. It'll be slow - we do a 4/1 run/walk. I would normally do very little most of the week but I've signed up for the Tour de France Challenge and need to ride. So I was gonna do a long slow ride on Mon and maybe something on Tuesday, drive on Wed, a little ride in TN before the race, possibly an OWS with Wesley on Friday. (Can't swim the course cuz it's in the TN river - yucky, dirty water - right down where boats normally go. Can't do the ride cuz it'll be on a section of a highway which will be closed for the race) Do you think the long run and the couple of long, but easy rides, will be too much? I might do a short run Thurs or Fri and a short ride on the other day. Basically I'd be doing something every day but Wed and Sat. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Peggy, I think your taper plan sounds fine! Long run of 6 miles this weekend should be good... you could do some shorter more intense stuff Monday and Tuesday, or longer and easier. Thurs and Fri if you fit in one of each (ie, one bike, short and easy, one run, easy 2 miles tops, OWS) and then take Saturday off, I think you'll be good to go. but listen to your body... If your legs are feeling fatigued, maybe take off Thurs too and just do a little of all 3 on Fri... you want to keep the muscles loose, but not overtax them at the same time. Be sure to start hydrating a few days prior too! I found the travel day in the car REALLY messed with my hydration. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I TOTALLY struggled through my workout today... I think it's a combination of rearranging my sleep schedule to get myself and little man up early enough for me to workout before going to work, and I've worked out pretty hard every day this week. I'm definitely glad it's the weekend, I can tell my body needs the rest days. I pushed and completed the 500 yards today, but my legs felt like cinder blocks....ugh! I also haven't been eating before I work out; the idea of working out on a full stomach is not appealing. I am starting to feel, however, that I may need to eat a LITTLE something, so I'm not shaky when I'm done working out. I'll be anxious and ready to get back going come Monday!!! On a VERY good note...I haven't weighed myself in a month because I get totally discouraged when I'm not skinny in 4.23 days. SO...I weighed in this morning and am 12 lbs down!!!! Wooooohoooooo |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm going to post this link again because it's such a good one. Since I've just started working with Kati on the swim, there's just so much to think about, but here's a good representation of a perfect stroke... I wish this was a video of ME, if only I could be that perfect!! But this is what I strive for... MMMers, let me introduce..... MR. SMOOTH (and no, it isn't Wilson, Brad, or Shawn!). |

Wooooohoooooo Kati - WOOOT!! On the weight loss. That is awesome!! GREAT job on getting it done all week. It only takes 1 month for something to become a habit!! That means you are 1/4 of the way to making this a lifestyle!! LOL It gets easier to get up too - promise!! As for the eating. For me it depends on what I am going to do. If running is on the schedule, I can do that (and some schools of thought recommend it!) on an empty stomach - if it's not a "long" run (for me over 5 miles) . Swimming/biking or weight training though requires SOME type of food intake about an hour prior or else I have ZERO energy and am shaky. Instant oatmeal is a great light source of energy! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Glad Hilde is cultivating some SMOOTH players in the pool. -- Although, Shawn - Brad and I are already SMOOTH!!! No improvement needed! I've seen that technique stuff before and it makes me so so sick!!! Kati, great job on the weight loss - keep at this craziness and eat good and it'll get even better!! I wish I could tell you that the workout struggles will become lessened....but I'm afraid not...they will just change to a different kind of struggle. After you get a base fitness then you'll struggle to get faster, leaner and meaner.....I think this is where many of us are now...I'm in that category for sure! Just got back from the doctors and he agrees that the gastro route is next if the pulmonologist doesn't find anything. So he gave me a Dexilant pill once a day to keep the stomach acid stuff at bay. And he also gave me a liquid I have to drink, Carafate, three times a day to heal any ulcer or damage. He thinks that my last run where I ended up wheezing is due to acid reflux getting into my airway - causing issues there too. So, the pills should be therapeutic dosage in 3-5 days and the liquid should start to heal me gradually and it may take a month or so if the damage is bad...If I don't feel substantial relief in 2 weeks then I'll have to be scoped to see what the problem is.....So - I'm hopeful that this does the trick.....some trick...any trick so I can forget about this BS. |

(I can't afford to gain weight...this is supposed to help me lose!) It's SO crazy...when I'm obsessed with eating properly and weighing myself every other day, it's like I gain weight....so I didn't weigh myself for 5 weeks, and just tried to make better eating decisions and better portion control, and voila! Still more work to do, but I've got nothing but time! |

I hope you like it as much as I do! If I were you I'd definitely take it for a spin. It's fun to be excited about riding. Congratulations again! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello, all you gorgeous MMMers!! So sorry for being out of touch for a while-- Steppenwolf's even more intense in the second trimester than it was in the first. I shudder to think of what the third trimester will be like... but it's all AWESOME as well as exhausting, honest! I've updated my logs-- have tried to keep moving on top of all the stuff I'm doing at school, as you can see. Best news ever, though: as of Friday, July 1 (Happy Canada Day to me!), THE BOOT IS OFF!!!!!! I've already done the Happy Dance (carefully) around the room as a result-- bless them, the Steppenwolf Pack were all happy for me, too! It's lovely to feel like I actually have both feet on the ground, or close to it. Important details: I'm cleared for swimming, biking (YAY!!), and should be able to start running (from scratch, natch) in a couple of weeks. Turns out my sister's coming for a visit then and needs new running shoes, so she and I will head out to the LRS and get new shoes to start our respective programs then. Meantime, I stopped off at the LBS on Friday after school and made arrangements for them to get a Cervelo roadie in my size out of storage and fixed up for me to try it out next weekend! Stay tuned, but I should have new wheels soon!! I am *so* up for being a member of Team Donuts, Gin, & Tonic, by the way-- Waco 2012, look out! Hope you're all having a fabulous weekend. I don't have tomorrow off, but will do my damndest to get online more often, if only to admire Kat's bike pr0n and applaud everyone's achievements! GO MMMers, GO!!! Hugs to all, Alex |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can and will fully and most respectively admit that I, Kati Nicholson, TOTALLY underestimated the bike. In conclusion, the bike at the gym can suck it. I just went for my FIRST actual bike ride, and on my new toy. I LOVE IT! The clips weren't bad at all, in fact it was more difficult meneuvering in and out of them on the trainer. I will update my training log as soon as Mom posts our data, but we did somewhere around 5.5 miles. Did one fair hill, and it was 101 degress out, not considering the heat index. I did NOT fall, but my mind was going a million miles an hour thinking about traffic, brakes, clips, etc... I had fun, but I feel like I'm going to die right now, my neck is killing me, and I feel like I got kicked in between the legs. Nothing that some shopping this afternoon for matching bike clothes can't fix. I'm signing off for the day, as my little prince comes home in a few hours, and I'm thinking it might be date night with Toy Story 3 and maybe even some popcorn! Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday! |
