My shin splints have been acting up and I am waaaay behind in my half mary training plan. I don't think I'm going to make it through 6+ more miles in the next few days. I sent one a bill one time for my time because I waited for 2 hours but haven't not paid for a diagnosis, even if rushed. However, It ain't right to be a slacker especially if you are a professional. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't let him know what you did find from another practitioner. Sometimes it's good education for the first guy--and any doctor worth his/her salt is always up for that. Recently my hubby broke his collarbone. He was seen in an urgent care clinic, xrays, broken in one place, here's your new sling, yada yada. 3 days later he says "something's not right", so I call and get him in with an ortho doc same day--turns out it was broken in 2 places, and was overlapping 3+ centimeters. Required surgery within 2 days. This at the same time he was supposed to be traveling out of the country for work. A month later, I get the bill from the urgent care clinic--with the charge for the office visit, xray and $475 for a "surgical". WTH????? I called and made a stink with the billing department, and told them the huge snafu with missing the bad part of the break. They immediately took off the $475 fee. And hopefully they let the doc know what a mistake he made. (I know I should care more and make sure he did, but seriously, the guy put a mask on to come into the room to see someone who wasn't sick. And no, the doc wasn't sick either.). Moral of the story--it never hurts to ask, just approach it in a nice way, and follow up with the doc by phone/email if at all possible. You're more likely to get somewhere with the bill if you're nice (but firm and clearly not happy) about it.wgraves7582 - 2010-01-28 8:31 AM So Ghoulies I have been thinking about my first sports doctor appointment and his diagnosis of arthritis. I have a HSA medical plan and know I will be getting a bill from him for the balance and I am thinking of sending him the bill back with a letter explaining that I don't feel obligated to pay for his services because his diagnosis was rushed and not even close to what the problem was. Basically explain to him that in these economic times that he wasted my time and I have since had to pay $100 in co-pays to get a proper diagnosis he was capable of obtaining. Anyone ever done anything like that to a doctor? It is customer service after all and if he had bad service or a bad product would he not expect better. What say yee Ghoulies? You can try it, but IMHO I think you will end up paying most of not all of the fee. Wrong or not, he did still spend time seeing you as a patient. It's worth a shot though. When I broke my arms I was in the ER complaining of my hands being numb, it got blown off and I was told it was just from the swelling. A little over a year later when I'm still having numbness, and confident the swelling had subsided, I got a second opinion, then third opinion. Third doc, neurosurgeon, ordered a CAT Scan, MRI, and nuclear study. I had broken 3 transverse processes in my neck, along with some other damage. Second doc is the one who did the EMG. I had mild to moderate nerve damage in both arms from the neck down, and moderate to severage damage from the left elbow down, he said we'd just monitor the situation to see what happend. My arm already bothered me so bad there were times I couldn't touch it to anything. I would walk around holding my arm out because it was too painful to bump it against my body. Third doc looked at the EMG results and I had surgery 3 weeks later. My arm felt better in the recovery room than it had felt in the past year and a half. Doc told me he hates to say anything is the worst he's ever seen, but the nerve in my elbow was packed in tighter than anything he'd worked on before. I'm still supposed to have neck surgery someday, but I'll pass. I can live with it for now. That dang horse cost me over $15,000 and still counting. Wait... what were we talking about? |
