I'll bet that's the antelope running down the mtn biker.  Just calculate the kinetic energy of a 700lb mass moving at 20mph.  That is crazy.  That thing looked like it was targeting him!

Yup, that's it.  That dude is lucky he didn't get impaled.

Jeff - Awesome workouts.  I can't believe you're hammering one armed laps.

Jonathan - I totally get the trainer pain.  I can't wait to get back to some biking.  We have had incredible fall weather this month, and I'm laying in bed hardly able to sit up to cough!  It's been KILLING me as I feel like I've wasted what could have been a great month to bike before winter hits.

Bryan - That's a crazy video.  Unreal that he was pretty much ok.  I've been attacked by wild turkeys, but jeez.

Dirk – You’re gonna kill it, Boston here you come.

On my own personal journey, per latest x-ray I now have no infection in my lungs and have been cleared to run this weekend!  So while Dirk is battling pain on his 26.2 journey, I’m gonna go out and do a 15-20 minute jog in his honor.  I can’t even express how excited I am to get back at it.  Keeping the ramp up slow is definitely going to be my biggest challenge.  I feel like I’m starting all over from scratch after this layoff.

I'm going to be on my own personal journey of reintroducing running.  Since bones, tendons and such take so much time to acclimate when you begin running...here's hoping they detrain slower too!

For those of you who are mountain bikers, I'm pretty sure you will appreciate this little instructional video demonstrating what to avoid doing while mountain biking.

Is it possible that sitting at my desk for 7+ hours a day is what is causing my hips to be tight?  I did some intense stretching last night before bed.  60 second holds...and my run this morning was easier.

In my best Forest Gump impression "I was runnniinnngg"

Reached a single run milestone today (by Accident).  Went for my normal Tuesday run with a target of 7-8 miles.  I dropped my Son at football practice and headed out on the trail.  Felt pretty comfortable and relaxed that I did not pay attention to distance.  Once I did check I had gone 4.9 miles, and still had to make the turn around.  In short I completed 10.1 miles, 1st time I have ran this distance in 1 stretch.  The best part I really only had some minor discomfort in the bottom of my feet around mile 7.5.  I have also started to figure out how to use my garmin so I am inserting my splits below.  Anyone want to guess the point I realized I was going to be late for the end of football practice.  Embarassed (max HR)

Mile 1: 10:42(142) Mile 2: 10:55(140)  Mile 3: 10:59(143) Mile 4: 10:54 (145) Mile 5: 11:02(147)

Mile 6: 10:54(151) Mile 7: 10:43(154)  Mile 8: 10:27(156) Mile 9: 9:59(161) Mile 10: 9:39(170)

Oh, and I made it to the end of practice with 13 minutes to spare!!

Amazing run Matt!  That's when running really seems to hit a high, when you feel like you can run forever.  Not looking at your watch can prove pretty beneficial sometimes.  It removes a distraction that I get too hung up in much of the time and allows me to just run and enjoy it.

Those last 2 miles look pretty good too.  How were you feeling at the end of the run?

Absolutely possible.

Set some sort of alarm/timer to go off every hour.  When it goes off, stand up and walk to the water fountain.

Good run Matt!  10 miles is huge.  How many people in the world can run for 10 stinking miles?!

Pacing was good too...did it feel comfortable? (at least to mile 8)

And how do the legs feel today?  Was it too much for them?

By the end of the ru I was tired but not exhausted.  With-in 5 minutes I was having a conversation with some other parents and wasn't panting at all.  My heart rate went down pretty quick.  I didn't think I had increased my pace as much as I did because my breathing only slightly increased.  My legs definately knew I was running harder but nothing extreme.

As for today I have only minor carry over affects.  My hamstring is a little sore but went away quickly after walking the factory today.  My ankles are also sore but that is from changing my stride to alleviate knee pain.  After careful thought I found I was rolling off my little toe and pushing knee out to the side instead of straight.  Concentrating hard to leave off my  big toe to keep the foot and ankle straight.  Hopefully this will eliminate the knee pain I have almost always had, just have to get the ankles and surrounding area use to the change.

Looking forward to a short 3-4 mile run tonight.

That's a great run Matt.  And Jeff is right. Sometimes we forget how unusual it is to do the stuff we do because we're among a bunch of crazy fit people on this site.

I mean, run 10 miles, with the last two at a stepped up pace, and then to recover that quickly and the next day be looking forward to a "short" 4 mile run?  That's some nice fitness right there.

I would agree there! Awesome job matt! That's quite a workout. Remember to drink lots of water today. I'm usually sore two days after, so make sure you nip that before hand.

something else to put in the mix is checking your arms a little.  Make sure they are not crossing over the centerline of your chest.  this can produce some over rotation of your shoulders leading to a more pronounced over-pronation.  i have found that my stride has changed (without me intentionally working on it) over the past several years.  I have been able to transition to a slightly more firm shoe with a little less stability "control."

I am in agreement with jeff.  when I spend a lot of time in the office at work, I am much more stiff throughout my entire body when I begin my training sessions.  Sometimes at work I will get up and walk around the building just because I need to move.

The article that talks about running tall mentions to watch yourself in store windows when running by....I have found that I almost rotate around my core a bit while keeping my shoulders square.  It lets me extend each leg a bit more.  Definitely helps loosen up my hip flexors.  This "style" feels better, but is harder work, so I can only do it for so long.

Keeping the shoulders square is good.  If rotating the hips back and forth feels good and loosens up tight muscles, then use it once in a while for that purpose, but don't make it your normal running form.  It's dangerous.  It also probably means that you are overstriding which dramatically increases the impact forces on the legs and is very possibly one of the key reasons that you struggle with leg injuries.

The most efficient/fast runners have nearly no hip movements while running.

Interesting thought....maybe I will do a little video of my run form on a treadmill when I get home. Would that be useful at all?? I never considered it because when I run with my fiancé I almost match her footsteps and she is a foot shorter.

Well, if your stride length is the same as your fiance, then you probably aren't overstriding.  But we still don't want hips twisting.  Yes, I'd love to see some video.

I got 6 miles in this afternoon and I plan a couple tomorrow morning before we head to Columbus.  Tomorrow's run will be pretty easy and probably only a couple of miles first thing in the morning.  That will put me at 20 miles for the week.

I don't have a bib number for this race yet.  I'll post it as soon as I get my race packet from the expo tomorrow.  For some reason they aren't giving the bib numbers out until you pick up your packet.  Seems weird to me.

My final run is complete for my pre-race activities.  I am now in the resting and hydrating/carb loading phase completely.  With less than 24 hours to race time I am feeling ancy and nervous.  I have a couple of things to help me focus on the race especially for those last 5-6 miles when the going will be very tough.

I have a couple of temporary tattoo's that I will be putting on my forearms to help me re-evaluate my resolve during the hardest portions of the race.

The first one has my wife's name and both of my daughters names

Lisa...Laiken...

Kyrie...Family

The second one

Semper Fi

Ben Schmidt -KIA

This is one of my nephews buddies that was killed last week in Afghanistan.  He was killed in combat and was one of Micheal's best friends.  The fought a lot together last year when Michael was in Afghanistan and some of the firefights were pretty intense.  They began their bond there and it continued throughout until Ben was killed on 10-12.  Michael had foot surgery about 2 months ago and his rehab is ongoing and he hates that he's not there with his brothers.  I'll be thinking about this a lot during the race!

If you think about it, say a prayer for all of our troops today.  They need our undying and vigilant support!
