Carolyn, remember you are wearing something underneath the wetsuit.  One thing I have learned about endurance sports is you get use to the things you normally thought were disgusting.

I knew someone who would not use a port a john.  Then she took up running races, lets just say she got over her fear of port a johns because she learned she either had to wait a really long time for a regular bathroom or hold it and then rush home.

Thanks to all for your wetsuit suggestions and insight in terms of ignoring my...ahem..concerns. I've had six kids and an interesting assortment of animals so at some point or another I've had my hands in everything and don't know why a used wetsuit is icking me out a little. Nonetheless, I will be renting and can't wait to try it out. I'm afraid I'm going to really need that extra flotation for this first race and hope the swimming comes together more before May when I'll be going sans wetsuit.

Ironman Oceanside 70.3 in the books. Not the best race but certainly not my worst. Calf problems kept me from being able to really run which kept me from a PR. On a good note, I PR'd the bike with a 3:06 - my best bike time at any HIM and had a decent swim in really cold water which has caused me to struggle significantly in the past. The run was rough. My calf was so tight, I'm surprised that I didn't have to walk the whole thing. I just kept going at just over  10 min mile finishing about 25 minutes slower than I had hoped. I knew I could do it faster if not for that stinkin' calf and for the last 3 miles I was at war with that run course but kept looking at my beads and thinking I needed to just get it done. I am so glad to just be able to participate and looking forward to my next event to support BOC.

Did anyone else do race? If so, how did you do?

How long do you suggest for recovery? I am looking to do a half marathon in May and another HIM in June/July

Great job Molly on your bike PR!  Sorry to hear about your calf for the run, sounds like that bead helped you keep going.    Good for you to look for the positive.

congrats Molly on finishing another race!  Things don't always go our way, but it sounds like you handled it well and had some positive aspects of the race despite the calf issues.

Recovery can vary from person to person.  Definitely don't rush back into hard training.  Take a few days totally off or do some easy walking or swimming for a couple of days and then ease back into the running.  Even if you take the whole week off, you still have time to build back up for your next races.

Great job Molly!!  You nailed the swim and the bike and injuries are going to come.  I think you should rest that calf and get it healed so it doesn't give you problems the rest of the season.  Some recovery swimming is all I would do.  Maybe some physical therapy for the calf will get it all better.Laughing  You have a good base, you have time to build again.

AWSOME JOB ON THE PR!!

And the finish with the calf issue. Way to push through it. I just did a half marathon solo and was thinking the entire run that sooner or later I will be doing a swim and bike and this... whew!

Got my beads!!  I'm so excited.  I couldn't even explain the concept to my husband with out choking up.  I'm doing my first race this week end, a 10k, so i am so happy to wear and experience the beads and share the info with others!!

Hey Lou, I want to move to Florida.  You have some fun races on your sign off!!

Hello all,

I was looking for some suggestions/advise on what to do on a cross training day.  I really need to find an activity that does not involve my legs too much.  Biking and running already take it toll on my 50 yr old body, and they really need a day off!

I am curious what others might be doing.

Thanks

Ann, good luck with your race this weekend.

Dave, the only thing I can think of is working on your core, and/or strength training.  Yoga would also be good too.

As always, I agree with Kathy.  Easy on the strength but yoga would be great or pilates.

Thanks for the encouragement on this week end's event.  I have never done a 10k.  I am a 11 + minute miler so I am hoping for a 1:05.  Are you out there Triple??  I am planning an easy 4.8 mile run on Sat that I couldn't get in today.  The race is Sunday. You don't think that is a problem, do you?  I have to go to Albany all day tomorrow for a meeting. Cry (3 hours there and back at minimum!!)

Happy training all,

ann

I agree with the yoga suggestion.  I've done yoga for 11 years now (even before endurance events) and I think it has helped keep me injury free for the most part.  If you try a class and don't like it, try another one.  Or find a good DVD and do it at home.

Ann, are you following a plan?  Why the 4.8 miles on Saturday (it just seems like an odd amount)?

Ultimately, only you know your body, but if you have put the training in for the 10K and want to do well, I'd just maybe do 20 minutes on Saturday to keep the legs moving and save your energy for Sunday.  If you are just doing the 10K for fun, then you could keep the easy 4.8 run on Saturday.  Look at it this way - no matter what you do, you are sure to get a new PR on Sunday!

HEY BRI, I have never done a 10k so it will be a PR regardless!!  I am just doing it for fun and using it as training.  I follow a BT training plan that I designed with a run emphasis, so I do 3 runs per week and 2 of swim and bike.  I'm not positive it is 4.8 but I think that's what it is.  I have to check.  I plan on doing it very easy.  I'm very OCD about getting work outs in as scheduled if at all possible.  So there you have it.

So how did the 10K go???

Add another finish line for me.  I finished the Cap 10K.  Not my fastest, but better than I thought I'd do with all the congestion I've had lately.

Hey.  Had a nice race.  Finished a drop over what I had hoped for but it was quite ambitious so I am happy with it.  I felt good.  It was quite chilly.  Did a recovery swim after.  It is finally warming up here in the Northeast.  Had a nice ride outside yesterday.Cool Worked last night so i am going to take a nap and hopefully run 7 when I get up.

Added our 5 finish lines. I got one at the Gulf Coast Interstate Relay. New Orleans to Pensacola bike relay. It was awesome. We carried 26 beads for Beads of Courage. By the way, thanks to all of you getting involved. Everyone is doing great. We have finishes all over the board. I love reading the new questions and the comments of all of my co-mentors. It makes me proud of the greatest group on BT!!!!

BEST OF LUCK!!!

that would be awsome if you got in.

I just finished my 2nd sprint tri this morning.. completely different story.  Swam 400 more meters than the last race and finished 7 minutes faster.. PR on every aspect of the event.

Totally pumped on it.  Almost ready for my upcoming olympic in May.

Yep,

Listened to everything u all said.. and hired a tri coach.  Only small issue is my wetsuit is still a little small.  I honestly could of pushed harder during bike and run, but I thought I would gas out.  I had lots of energy at the end.  So we will see how far this goes

Before I forget to ask again.  Who can recommend a good wetsuit that is not too tight around your neck?  I have heard there are some that are easier on your neck than others.  This one I have now is a little tight there and would like more breathing room.

Thanks for your comments as always!
