haha.. yeah I take it for granted sometimes.. when I see you poor guys limited to trainers and heated indoor pools I realise it.. it just never happens here. I can ride, swim and run all year round in the open.

Thank you for your reply. It does make sense and after reading that the all woman event does sound like a great place to start. I forget that even though I may not be looking to "beat" anyone in the competition that doesn't mean that's how everyone else is doing it. When you are doing a tri do you wear a tri suit or how do you dress?

everyone does their own thing with what to wear, but I wear tri shorts and my sports bra -- that's it, pull on the shirt for the bike/run after swimming.  i don't like a skin tight bike/run shirt so wearing it in the water would make for a heavy, sagging shirt.  very few newbies wear tri suits -- and those that do are men with big bellies and very tight suits -- not a good picture.  ha ha.

Hi all!

Okay I am also super jealous of serenityau's access to such a large nice large pool!! Is it heated?

I'm pretty much just checking in here to say hi and ask a few ?'s. I have signed up for the Los Alamitos Race on the Bace Reverse Tri. I am excited and super nervous. I hear it's beginner friendly and totally flat. I'm not too worried about the swim because it's in a pool. I think as long as I wear something to plug my nose I'll be okay. I am considering wearing a face mask (you know the kind that comes with snorkels. Like big goggles with a nose plug. But wearing it without the snorkel of course). Other than looking really stupid, is there any reason we can't/shouldn't wear those?

I'm curious about the swim though. Is it usually in a shallow pool where you can stand up to rest in the middle of the lane? Or is that a big no-no? And I'm assuming you can't push off the wall or dive in, right? So when you first start, what do you do? Just get in the pool and then push your feet off the bottom to start swimming?

And, last, I can't decide between just wearing my bathing suit under my biking shorts (the top is kind of like a tank top so I won't be bouncing around or hanging out. lol). Or I could just wear the biking shorts in the pool with a sports bra or the tank bathing suit top. Don't know if the "butt pad" on the shorts will be too heavy when wet, though. Hmm... So much to think about. Okay sorry for all the questions. Just thinking out loud.

ETA: Good luck to all in your training and any upcoming races!

no, its not heated.. actually what you see is maybe only 5% of the total amount of water.. it is a bunch of swimming lagoons.. totally huge. I swim there in the middle of our 'winter' no trouble.

nose clips are not an option ? Ive seen people wearing them in races

I swim in bike pants all the time.. no problems at all

A bunch of swimming lagoons? Wow! That's awesome. Yea I was wondering because it looks like a swimming pool but way huger! Even though I live in SoCal where the weather is good and there's tons of pools I'm still having trouble getting regular access to a pool that's not always crowded!

Yes, nose clips might work. I was thinking of the mask just cuz I've used it before and already have it. I'll get some  nose clips and try them out. That would be much less conspicuous. haha.

Oh! Good to know! Thanks! If that's the case I can just wear the bike shorts and jump in the pool. One less thing to worry about.

Tomorrow is Feb 14-half way through the month! I'm not quite halfway to my goals, but I'm getting there!

How's everyone else doing this month?

lsmapp - 2011-02-02 11:48 AM So is anyone/everyone setting goals for February? This is the month I'm planning to get more serious about my training, up to now I've just been working on building some skill in biking and running! But now I'm three months out of my first tri and I want to give myself some more concrete goals:

Run: 75km total
Bike: 100 km total
Swim: 4000m at least

Anyone else want to share?

sorry about the slow response, nope, no problem wearing a snorkel mask except you can't breath through your nose -- I recommend something like these:

http://www.triathletesports.com/Aqua-Sphere-Kaiman-Swim-Goggles-With-Mirrored-Lens-p/as-kaimanmir-ds.htm?gdftrk=gdfV21962_a_7c337_a_7c868_a_7cAS_d_KAIMANMIR_d_DS&origin=pla

they don't make your eye sockets feel like they are going to cave in and are as comfortable as snorkel goggles and you can breath through your nose.

the swim -- you can probably get away with stepping on the bottom, but read the rules carefully.

regarding shorts -- tri shorts are made so you can wear them in the water without feeling like you are wearing a diaper.  i highly recommend skip the swim bottom and just wear the tri shorts -- the swim suit bottom will be uncomfortable on the bike and run and it's not made for drying out under your shorts where as the shorts are made to swim in and bike and run.

good luck!

here's the big question, how many of you all are still on the triathlon wagon?  don't bail now -- it's only February so sign up for a race and tell people you are doing it, having it in the back of your mind that now you have to will be a little more motivation to get out there rather than throwing in the towel already with, 'next year'.

Well Deb, I actually bit the bullet and decided to go with a full Iron in October rather than the half.  Please check my training log and let me know what you think.  I know that I will have to do much longer things (rides, swims and runs) over the next few months but let me know what you think about the start of the year.

I've signed up for 3 races so far. They're all sprints and I was really looking forward to them. The problem is that the grafted ACL in my knee tore last week (after I had signed up for the races) and now I need revision surgery. I can still swim and bike, but I'm not allowed to run. Since the organizers don't give refunds I'm planning to do the swim and bike and just walk the run portions. This is going to be really hard for me since I'm pretty competitive and had thought that at this point I would be in the top of my age group.

Unfortunately, in order to have the surgery I have to wait for a donor ACL and that could take anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months.

Full steam ahead here as well, have a sprint in both July and August and am contemplating another at the end of April.  I am starting swimming lessons the first week of march, so depending on how those progress, I will make my decision regarding the April sprint.

good to hear -- July and August are definitely the easier ones to be ready for when you live in a snow state.  being here in a sun state, i just feel guilty on the time.

I don't think there is, but i do believe they can view the blog by becoming a free member so it wouldn't cost them anything to look and we should all have the junk mail email address if their worry is spam -- that said, my experience is this site does a pretty good job of not putting us on too many unwanted lists.

nice job Richie.  i too am doing an Ironman this year so we can suffer together.    I will have a look at your plan and get back to you on sunday.  the many hours on the bike are the toughest for me to find time for, but find a riding buddy or two and that's a good start

Happy March!   How is everyone doing?  I'd like to do a two week challenge. every day you eat four servings of fruits and two servings of vegetables, give yourself a point.  You might be surprised at how much you are missing from your diet.  In two weeks, we'll tally the points and see how many points people earned.  Start date is march 4.

I have heard two schools of thought and I wanted to get opinions.  Some say save your legs during the swim because you will need all their strength for the bike and run.  Others say it is easier to swim when you use your legs and thus you will be more efficient in getting thru the swim.  I realize it's probably a combination of both, but wanted to hear opinions.  Hope y'all are doing well with your training.
