Cool Brian, moving up in the standings while you sleep!  Since I think you are the most experienced duathlete in the group, any advice for Cheri?

My thoughts would be to take it steady for the first run, ride solid, and start the second run with a good temp, and push your limits at the end of the run.

I think some reverse bricks in training would be beneficial too.

thanks guys, it was hard but fun.
As for advice don't go out too hard on the first run. Stay at your pace, and zone. Kick it up alittle on the bike. Then go for it on the last run.
The transitions seemed to make a difference. I practiced a little before hand then they had a transition clinic. It helped alot. you can deffintly pick up time in a du in the transitions.
Practice the T2 as the bike to run was still a sore subject for me. it took awhile for my legs to get going, didn't help the ride sorta ended on a hill. I tried to stretch on the bike but still didn't work out.
Don't know if any of this will help cheri. The only other thing I can say is have fun. It's just the first race of the year. My smile that started at the airhorn has not faded yet

Last couple of days of the month, how are you doing on your training goals?

Do you have a plan laid out for April?

I am within target of my "SBR" challenge goals.  Maybe a little low of what the training plan called for but should still achieve personal highs in Swim Time/yardage, and Run Time/mileage.

April is going to be even greater.  Should be doing a "smart" increase in distance (all except the bike - that my be a little excessive of an increase but within ranges of things I have done before

I came a little short in my running goals for the month, but I encountered some inner lower leg pain when running lately. I'm told that I just need to work through it, but it definately slowed me down.

I have a great plan laid out for April to get 2-3 workouts in each discipline each week, plus 2 strength workouts. My schedule is opening up and should let me get them all in. My first race will be on April 15th and will be a duathlon. My first "A" race will be on May 5th.

BTW....thanks for the duathlon advice. I can't wait to get the first one under my belt.

Way to go Cheri, may you leg heal quickly.

April 15 will be so fun, you have put in a lot of work this year, and it will be a good measuring stick.

I am in the "build" portion of my training. It includes running speedwork, anaerobic intervals in swimming and climbing and sprinting bike work. I am hoping to peak in late May, early June for my "A" races (two sprints and an Oly). Next race is April 15, too. A "B" short sprint (300 yard pool swim, 12.4 mile bike, 5K run). I hope I am not peaking early as I really have high hopes for that Oly.

It is good to see everyone so highly motivated. I am not in the same boat, in terms of motivation. My hip started aching again and I have been doing very little running therefore. There is a sprint triathlon in a city nearby, on April 15th, but I am thinking I am not ready...

I have been doing some leg extensions that an MD recommended me, and it has helped a bit.

I will train this week and see what happens...

Get yourself well!!!!  Take care of the hip.

You can do the sprint at any time.  You have put in the work in the recent past, it may not have you in a position to PR, but you can complete it if you are healthy.  Do what is wise for you.  Training and racing are a way of life and a healthy choice as long as you keep it in perspective.  For us amateurs, it is not life, but an enhancement of it.

May April's be strong for everyone, and those racing (seems like everyone but me)  Race well!!!

Very good advice, Scott. Thanks.
I have decided not to go to the triathlon in Pereira. I need to make sure I have recovered completely from my hip injury.
I am starting to do some exercises for my legs, chest and back.
Feels good!
Happy easter for everyone!

Helmuth

That's a smart choice, Helmuth. I'm sure you'll have many more injury-free tris ahead of you.

Good luck Sunday Cheri and Pam, and Pam, you don't need everyone to bail (build an Ark or whatever) out to win.  It is in you!

Cheri,

Just finished checking out your race report. Awesome job!!!! Welcome to the madness! I'm hoping to have my race report done tomorrow, but my splits aren't posted as of yet. I did my sprint in 1:04:27 which was good enough for FIRST PLACE (female)!!!!! This is the first time I've ever won an overall award. Hope everyone else had a fun and relaxing weekend.

Hope everyone is doing well.  Sometimes months can be tough and life can impact training.  Coming up on time to review what worked in April, what didn't, what can be done to correct it and move forward with you plan in May.

Me, I forgot where the pool was and just couldn't get myself to go for long runs.

I will start May with a habit of getting into the water 3 or more times a week, go back to more drill work and not focus on yardage completed - except in particular workouts.

I will get out and play on the bike, doing some of my short rides off road just to keep it fun.

I will start my running build up from where I left off in April and not try to "catch up" that in which I feel behind.  I will endeavor to put more quality into each session

Life certainly impacted my training in April. I am struggling to ride longer distances on the bike and keep my run training time ahead of my swim training time. I am finding it difficult to keep improving in all three sports.

Goals for May: Improve swim speed without losing endurance
Ride more mileage and throw in a few spin classes for speed and power
Run more than I swim trying to improve both endurance and speed

These are pretty hefty goals considering May is the last full month of school for my kids, so it is full of programs and events for them. Also, I'm teaching swimming lessons which increases my work week from 3 to 5 days. And I've got two races in May which always drops my training volume. Focus and time management will be key.

Keep up the good (and hard) work!

Pam

good goals for may..you can do it.. positive attitude vibe headed your way..

I'm back.. I'm allowed to train but per the doc i must go slow.. i lost alot of muscle the past month .I'm about 50% strength of what i was....but . it will not hold me back. my goal is at least one race before the end of summer or fall( if need be).

good health and good training to all..

That's GREAT news!! Just remember to not push too hard. Let your body tell you what it is ready for. It's good to have you back.

DITTO!!  Glad you can make it back.  Take care of yourself and build slowly.  Solid foundations take time, don't rush yourself but make steady progress.  Your health is to last a lifetime.

Welcome back, Brian. I ditto Cheri's remarks. Slow and steady to rebuild your base. As far as training goes, something is better than nothing and plenty of rest between somethings. You have a great attitude and outlook on life. You will do this!
