But they theoretically could have been made anytime up until 3 days prior due to them being in the name of a Starwood Platinum Preferred Member- so yes, I had a special connection. We are staying in what's been listed as a sold out hotel for months 1.0 miles from Monona Terrace and 0.1 miles from Lake Monona. Near as I can tell, the bike course goes right by the hotel when leaving town. Past experience suggests that 1.0 miles is going to seem awfully durned long Sunday evening though but I'll be snacked and massaged at that point so I will perservere I do my first 100+ mile ride this week as it's the last week of my pre-IM training and I have an appointment for a 2.5 hr bike fitting at Fitwerx in VT on Sat July 1st. While there, we'll discuss what I'm going to do about Power meters(not for use at Moo other than to gather data, more to develop with over the winter) and place my order for race wheels. I'm getting a Zipp 303 front and Zipp 404 rear(maybe w/ Powertap SL hub) tubular model. Does anyone have any suggestions on brand of tire to put on them? They'll be my first tubulars but I'll get them in time to race Timberman on them too so it won't be something brand new on IM Moo race day. I know that a deeper dish than the 303 is more aero but I do mostly hilly courses so weight is a factor as is the fact that I only weigh a buck ten(actually 112 at FL 70.3 weigh in). I don't want to risk fighting a deeper dish on a windy course and I'm really hoping to race a notoriously windy course someday. Thanks for suggestions. Have fun riding the course this coming weekend and please report back for those of us that likely won't be able to do anything other than a pre-drive. |

Pro 3906 St Charles, IL | Subject: RE: IM Wisconsin Training Begins I ride 404's with a PT SL built into the rear. It's a sweeeet setup. You've got enough time between now and IMWI I think to set some power zones. It's definitely a HUGE benefit in reigning in that early ride tendendancy to go too hard. Watts is watts, but HR moves around depending on rest, and if you've tapered right, then you'll be well rested at the start of the bike. I've not ridden a 303 front, but then I'm a 175 lb guy, so I can hold my own against most any wind. What's the weight differential between the 303 and 404? I ride tubulars as well, and go with Conti Sprinters as my tub of choice. I ride conti clinchers on my training wheels ( gatorskins ). So I'm a fan of Conti, it'd be pretty safe to say. |

Extreme Veteran 470 Madison, WI | Subject: RE: IM Wisconsin Training Begins Your Hotel is right across the street from the Alliant Energy Center so you can take the shuttle busses to/from the Terrace...Good Connection!! I rode the course on Saturday, and you should find no issues except for the two to follow which are great improvements. 1) ~150 ft before the Hill at midtown and the left uphill turn onto midtown have been black topped. This is a plus since previously it was like riding on cobblestone. However, They still need to put another layer so there is a 2-4 inch drop at the start, and 2-4 inch lip at the end. I saw a "speedster" on Saturday hit it to fast, and got a pinch flat. 2) Nine Mound Rode has been repaved!!! Thank the lord! Previously, it was another section that was like riding on cobblestones. I won't actually get the wheels until August is why I think the time is too short for setting up the zones to use at Moo this year. I'm kind of planning long term, multi-year development here. Sure, I hope to have a great day at Moo but realistically I suspect that I'll be close but not quite there yet so IM LP 2007 then becomes the next shot. Therefore, work on the bike over the winter w/ the Power unit and break through to the next level in 2007. The weight difference between the 303 and 404 isn't much different which is why I don't mind putting a 404 on back. My bigger concern was the sidewall height. I raced w/ some rented Blackwell 404 wannabees at FL 70.3 but wasn't impressed w/ the weight of them and worried that the sidewall would be too tall in windy conditions. I get rocked in solid crosswinds(which I trained alot in this Spring living on the edge of the Big Pond) even with relatively low profile training wheels so the 38 mm sidewall height of the 303 is appealing since the front is where control issues come from. Conti's, huh? I used to use those GP 3000- the clinchers can be a bear to get over the bead but never had any problems w/ them so it's worth keeping in mind. |

I was looking under the accomodation site under IM WI and found a couple hotels nearby that are like 15 minutes driving distance away. Does anyone know if parking around the race area is hard to find on race day? I would like to stay closer but they're either sold out or more expensive. The University Inn is the closest hotel not sold out. Has anyone stayed there or know if they're okay? Thanks |

Of course, I've screwed it up already by doing yesterday's run this morning because three different batches of thunderstorms came through yesterday. Rain is no problem but electricity I try to avoid. Did my first 100 miler of the year on Friday and had a smoking fast ride. So much so that I was wondering if I had somehow managed to find a route that was downhill with a tailwind. Not according to the Gremlin which had me ending 400 ft higher than I started w/ a net climb of 4100 ft. Pretty flat for 100 miles but by no means downhill. I rode from my Mom's house up to Watertown and then into the Adirondacks on Rt 3 so the higher ending elevation was appropriate as I was riding point to point rather than a loop. She picked me up, we stopped in Lake Placid for dinner, and then spent the night in Montpelier VT. Went down to Waitsfield the next morning and spent ~5 hours at Fitwerx getting custom shoe inserts, new bike shoes, a new saddle, and oh yeah, a bike fit. Bike shoes can be comfortable? Who knew? I certainly didn't prior to this weekend. Looking forward to spending some quality time on the bike in the new position and with the new equipment. Just being more comfortable on the bike should make for some time drop on the bike split just because I'll spend more time pedalling and less time shifting around trying to get into a position that's tolerable. Marnavett- how's the training trip to the course? How is everyone else's training coming together? We are currently 10 weeks out. |

As for me, we went out to Temecula (California Desert), and did 72 miles in the wind, and 105 degree furnace! This was really an ill-advised ride, but we did it anyway. Basically, I survived it..and thats about it! Anything under 100 in Madison will seem cool! lar dog

The new compact crank works awesome, and I dialed in my InfinIT formula w/ extra endurolyte powder. Tested it in 85-90 degree weather and had no issues. We see how things go in the coming weeks. Very reminiscent of IMWI 2005 today except the wind was not a factor... Train On... Mike |

Can't afford it myself (after the bike, wetsuit, race fees, nutritional supplements, etc) but I heard some one from Cyclops (I think this was on the SimplyStu podcast) saying that it is ideal for most cyclists and bike companies should start specing it. I have to make do with a 12-27. I rode the whole course yesterday also. I did two loops, you probably passed me, where you riding with anyone? I felt pretty good. So much better on the second loop than after riding one loop in years past (when I was just out for a bike ride). Fueling and Endurolytes went pretty good. Do you use a powder for your electroytes? I have a bit of a problem swallowing the pills. The day really helped my confidence that I can finish (my goal, while it is still light out). Note: As of yesterday you could continue through the construction on Timber and did not need to take the detour (as I did on my first loop). |

Hammer Nutrition has a powdered formula that can be added to fluids. Unlike the endurolyte capsules in which they changed the Na amount drastically (from 100mg to 40mg/cap), each powdered scoop is 100mg of Na plus the other goodies. You get 150 scopes in a cannister. Get it at Machinery Row for $17.95...Maybe we can meet for a ride an you can try some of mine. I just bought a new cannister. The last one lasted 2 1/2 yrs!! They say 1-2 is the max scoops but I've used up to 4 scoops in a bottle before the flavor goes south. I only take along endurolytes now for extreme cases. Also, I'm hoarding my last bottle of Endurolytes that utilizes the 100mg/capsule formula. What a dumb marketing move to sell product!!! Realistically, you could be ingesting 10-20 capsules/hr to replace your sodium (10 endurolytes gives you 40mg NA)... Once I'm out, I'm moving to SaltStick or Succeed. |
