Expert 851 Oceanside, CA | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns skarl - 2007-12-10 7:43 PM To clarify, in golf sandbagging means reporting high scores to get a higher handicap so you can win when you play at your usual level, so in this case it would mean underestimating one's goal so as to beat it easily. I wasn't trash talking my team, just the other teams We're right where we should be at only 1/4 of the way into the month, the way I look at it. You're killing me! LOL I knew you weren't trash talking us. I am following a specific training program. It just so happened that the beginning of it coincided with the beginning of this challenge, so what I put down for the challenge is really small. If we had started further along in my program my numbers would have been larger. Also, I think a lot of people took into consideration that the holidays might affect their ability to swim as much as they want to. If they get to swim more than than bargained for, their numbers are going to be higher than what they predicted for their goal. The main thing to remember is that you should be challenging yourself. Do what you planned on doing, and try not to worry too much about what the team as a whole is doing. It's easier said than done (I'm one of those ). Now, on a personal note. I had the pool to myself for the majority of my swim last night. I increased my distance by 100 yards and it kicked my booty. I felt like I forgot how to breathe! I couldn't believe just that little bit wore me out so much. I was really bummed about it until I got home and saw my new speedo had arrived. I just know it's going to make me faster |

Veteran 164 Brrr-mont | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Good Morning Penguins! How is everybody doing? Me, I just put my latest swim up on my training log and realized, that I am not getting any faster....waaaaaaaa So this morning, I am a sad and whiny penguin. OK, maybe not sad, but certainly NOT happy...I tried mixing some interval/speed laps in and I think they took so much out of me that I just got tired. I did do my laps though...did 1350 yards, and promptly went home to bed. I think we need a penguin to post on the other teams postings...one sticking it's tongue out. |

Veteran 228 Greenbelt, MD | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Couldn't find a picture of a penguin with his tongue out, but found this pretty funny while on the topic of poop: I'll be swimming tonight. I'm going to do some strength training first (all legs and since I barely kick it shouldn't bother my swimming). I realized yesterday that my legs are definitely not strong enough to be jogging around for as long as I'd like them to be...after 2 intervals of 6 minutes, my endurance was fine...I wasn't dying at least. But my legs were totally trashed. So, in hopes of not only helping the muscle imbalance that causes my knee issue (I think), but also to help me tote my heavy rear around easier, I'm going to start lifting. And I also invested in a marathon stick and foot roller. Going to hope my tight muscles and sore foot thank me because they weren't cheap! I'll report again after my swim tonight. I sure hope the speedo trio are Monday nighters only! |

Extreme Veteran 461 Minnesota | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Got 25 mins of swim time in today. Will definitely be at 50% of my total goal time by this weekend. My goal for Friday's swim is to be able to do 75 yards at once. So far I've been able to do 50 yard repeats, but needing to take recovery time in between. I think I will attempt it the first lap since I will be fresh and hopefully I'll be able to do a couple 75 yard repeats. Next week my goal for the end of the week is to be able to do 100 yard repeats. I'm going to feel amazing if I can get to that point! I did start working myself up for the 75 yards by taking less recovery time between repeats. I was able to get 11 laps in today. It seems like nothing compared to everyone else, but this is big for me! |

Hope it doesn't cuz kids will be with their grandparents the whole xmas week; I can swim swim swim and try to work off all the holiday snacks |

Veteran 228 Greenbelt, MD | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Swim 2 out of 4 this week is done. I got 1650 yards in. I went a bit faster than Monday, but I'm still so danged slow! My time definitely suffered at the end from sharing the lane with a woman who was doing breast stroke and therefore almost hitting me alot (of course as soon as I got out she switched to freestyle...um, hello, could you do the stroke that keeps you more streamlined while you are in the lane with me?). Also had a trio of high schoolers goofing off in the lane next to me and splashing everywhere...I guess it's good practice for OWS. Only one of the speedo trio was there, but it was Butt Floss man...doing his breast stroke...that really should be illegal! And great job everybody! I'm beat!

I couldn't find any evil penguin pics to scare the opposition, but just realized a good pic from Batman may do the trick. Maybe this weekend I'll have time to look (evil laugh)..... |

Veteran 164 Brrr-mont | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Here it is Thursday already, last night was suppossed to get a cross country ski in, but that didn't happen...weather conditions (very windy and wet) were not cooperating, so I ended up with a day off of training, and of course suffered a major case of the guilts. I guess that means that I am just going to have to swim longer tonite during the Masters Swim workout. Have you guys tried one of these...I was pretty intimidated at first, what with the "Masters" and all...but these guys sure know how to swim and kick my butt all at the same time. I am over 50% to my goal! Woohoo! What a nice feeling. I bet we come from behind this week with our numbers...and according to the little penguin poo picture, no one wants to be behind us penguins |

Regular 80 Colorado Springs, Colorado | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Thanks to the December challenge and my fellow Pesky Penguins, I've stayed motivated and put in 8450m so far. I'm over halfway there, which is good since I'll be gone for a few days over Christmas and I'm not sure how I'll swim while I'm away. I have to say that swimming makes me more ready to sleep at the end of the day than any other activity. It's the best kind of tired. Just keep swimming! |

Veteran 164 Brrr-mont | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Wooohooo! It's a beautiful morning isn't it? It's snowing here in Vermont, and looks like a postcard. Beyond that, last night I swam with the Masters Swim group and swam 2000 yards! ME! I did it...please pardon my excitement over this, I just never thought I could do something like that. Three months ago, I was so out of breath after one lap, a distance like this seemed impossible. I am so incredibly psyched. Thanks Cat and Donto for having this challenge! This rocks! Woohoo, I may just be impossible to be around for the rest of the day |

Expert 851 Oceanside, CA | Subject: RE: Pesky Pengiuns Katie and Karen, I'm thrilled to hear of your successes! It gives me such hope. I struggled last night to put in 300 yards. I'm excited as heck that I've reached the 1000 yard mark but I'm still a long way off from the finish line on this one. As to the speedo crew, I think one of their hairy uncles was visiting our pool last night. It's like a train wreck. You don't want to look, but catch yourself doing so! |

Terri - I really think having the swimming challenge made all the difference for me, and it is such a great feeling when you meet those little milestones...1000 yards is cool, and you did it too! Just keep swimming, just keep swimming...sing it with me! Everybody all together now! ( See I told you I'd be unbearable for the day ) |

However I got back to training today and did some weights this morning, and a cycle and an 800m swim in after school.(i had the afternoon off!) Felt great in the pool, and felt as if I could've gone much longer, but didn't want to push it too far. As they say, you should always finish a workout feeling like you could've given more. Anyway, I'm feeling much better having worked out today than I have been Hope everyone elses training is going well! |

I've got a second swim of the day planned for after work (somewhere between 1000-1500m, depending on how my arms feel) and I'm trying to get to the pool again tomorrow morning. My pool closes for the college winter break next Friday! |
