Initial Test Results--22 with good form so I will start wherever that puts me. I was actually nervous before I did my test. It has been a long time since I really did push-ups so i am really looking forward to this. I did push-ups religiously when I was 19 and my max then was 77 straight. I just did push-ups though without a overload program like this one. I am excited to see what I can do now 15 years later. I still can't believe I was nervous to do push-ups!!!!

I've been doing this same program for pullups.  IT'S HARD!!  I'm only trying to get to 60 pullups though.  After reconsidering this program, I think I should have done everything at 60% to get to 60 pullups.  I think the workouts overload too much and leave you tired at the last round.

Yesterday I had to do two sets of 20, two sets of 18, two sets of 15, a set of 14 and then max.  I got thru the two sets of 20 pullups, but the 18's were broken up a bit (took 5 seconds rest between each subset), as were the 15s.  The 14 I got thru, but only got 10 on my max set.  So I think the program is too intense for pullups.

Might try it again at 60%, but I'll wait til after IMFL.

You could probably do the pushups program at 100% for dips, since it's a chest/triceps move.

Week 1 day 1 of my 100 pushup challenge -

7/7/5/4/20

I did the sets of 7's and the max (20) modified (I'm a girl, I am allowed to, right?) and I did the sets of 5 and 4 regular style.

I should note that I did my L1D1 simplefit workout (20 minutes of {1 pull up, 2 push ups, 3 squats}) right beforehand, and all of those push ups were regular style too.  Woo hoo!

FYI. Week 6 sucks. Bad. Real bad.

56
45
42
40
60

I had to go to my knees a couple of times in the third and fourth sets. I did a crossfit workout this morning that was very shoulder and tricep intensive. I'm smoked.

Keep up the fight!

Way to go Steve!  I'm starting Week 6 today.  I didn't do the test yesterday because I know I can do more than what the third column requires.  I'll just do the final test this weekend.

If I can't do 100 at the end of this week, I'll repeat Week 6 and then just do max pushups every other day until I can get to 100.

Nope, no knees.  Just til you can't do any more with PROPER form.  That means chest to ground up to arms lockout with only toes and hands on the floor.

Nice start to the challenge!

I can't even imagine doing sets of pullups like that. 20+20+18+18+15+15+14+10=130 pullups!
Man, I'm weak. Is kipping allowed? What about grip? (under or overhanded) It was hard enough to get 20 for a PFT in the USMC. I never imagined doing more. I'm in.

Kipping is encouraged!!  CrossFit's standard pullup is a kipping pullup...even though you're helping yourself, you're still doing the work.  I kip 90% of my pullups.

Oh and to answer the other question...any grip.  I switch off.  Keeps the fatigue from setting in too quickly.  I'm still 20 away from getting 60 in one set.  But I'm pretty impressed at myself for being able to do 40 without stopping.

Good luck to you too!

OK well week 1 day 3 and here I am - weak!  but getting stronger.

Should note that this was after my simplefit workout of the day which already had me doing 21 pushups (in a row) and 10 pull ups (in a row)

10 / 9/ 6/ 5/ 11 (min allowable was 10)  My arms were tired!

So total pushups for the day yesterday are 62.

Awww...thanks!!   That's really cool of ya to say!

I'm glad I can inspire or motivate anyone to keep up the work!  I know not a lot of the tri community agrees with me, but I believe that consistent strength training is necessary for continued success in our sport.

With that said...tonight is Week 6, Day 2.  I considered doing Day 1 again, but I think it was just the fact that I did 200 pushups the day before that fatigued me so quickly.  I've had a rest day now so Day 2 shouldn't be a problem.  Will post results later.

Week 1 Day 2

12/12/10/8/4 I could not finish the required reps for the last two sets. I was beat....no muscular endurance. I will see how Friday goes but may consider repeating week 1 to help build endurance before moving forward beacue it just gets tougher from here.

OK pushup peeps.  I'm feeling a bit like a failure here. Or maybe not "failure" but how about...frustrated.  I can't seem to get to the required minimum reps on my last set for some reason!  This is the second day this has happened.

Today's workout was 2x30, 4x25, 2x22, max (56min).  I only got to 43.  OK, yeah I still did 247 pushups...that's probably some sort of PR for me...but d@mmit, it sucks that I just can't seem to get to that minimum without my arms giving out.  GRRRRR!!!

OK, so having whined, my results for today...

30+30+25+25+25+25+22+22+43 = 247

Week 6 is a huge leap from week 5. 5 wasn't too bad. But 6 is downright painful. So you shouldn't feel like you're failing or slacking.

I didn't do day 2 yet. Instead, I did the crossfit "Murph" workout. It entails a bunch of push-ups. You run a mile, do 100 pull-ups (not a typo, obviously I had to break these up into sets), 200-pull-ups, 300 squats, and then run a mile. It's a heck of a lot harder to do the push-ups after you're smoked from the pull-ups. Different muscles, but still difficult.

Yep I know what Murph entails.  Did it Tuesday in 36:01.
Don't you read my log?!?!   LOL
Splits...
Run #1 6:38
Pullups 6:40 (New 100 pullup PR)
Pushups 7:40
Squats 8:22
Run #2 6:41
Total time - 36:01 Murph PR by almost 2 minutes!!

Thanks for the encouragement tho, I do need to realize that all these pushups almost every day does have an effect on my ability to go long.  UGH.

Of course I read your log! I just thought I'd combine posts.

Some would argue that I got more benefit out of Murph. I got an extra 19 minutes of workout in my version (55 minutes).

Ya know I always think of that...what's better...doing it fast or doing it long?  That's really a great question.  I wonder if there's some kind of study we can do!  Hmmmmmmm...

I agree. I think there's benefit to both. You can do more if you do them fast. There is a benefit to explosive power you gain from quick push-ups. On the other hand, there's definitely a benefit of doing them slow. I tend to save the slower movement for the bench.
