I woke up to NEGATIVE NINE here in Shelburne Falls, MA!  Thank goodness I planned an afternoon indoor workout!  It's the one day of the week I have the luxury of my mother watching my 3-year-old so I have a bit more time.

**I'd like to up my bike base (from a measly 6 miles @ about 12 mph...but pulling a 30lb 3-year-old in a bike trailer).  I have no idea how hard I should work out today or how long?  I have about 50 minutes to an hour max. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Are you going to a gym to workout?  If they have spinning classes I would suggest you try one of those.  Alternatively, 50 to 60 minutes on a stationary bike at a zone 1 to zone 2 HR level should be good to help you build a base level of fitness.

Wow, I've just done a bit of research online to determine my zone 1/2 whereabouts and I thank you so much for your advice.  I think I'll feel a tad guilty but will enjoy myself immensely during this workout...magazines here I come Thank you, Thank you.

How did you end up estimating where your Zone 1 and Zone 2 would be?

I ranged from 123 to 136...staying mainly around 128, 129, 130??? Does this sound right?  It felt like moderate intensity.  Maybe a bit too much? My max HR for running is about 184. <---LT?

I used a running HR Zone calculator...but then later I remembered that cycling is supposed to be a smaller number...

Most people who really understand the whole HR thing will suggest that trying to figure anything off of a max HR is very difficult.  It is incredibly hard to figure out what your max hr is.  The formulas where you use your age, etc. are incredibly inaccurate.

Your best bet is to conduct a LT field test.  I described that early in this message thread (maybe page 3).  Once you do that you will know your Lactate Threshold (LT) and then you can plug it into the HR zone calculator on BT to figure out your zones.

Mitch - I think I caught your head cold late last week - THANKS

Don't you just hate it when something like that just interrupts your previously consistent workout schedule?

How is everyone doing?  Are there set plans that you are following or are sort of making it up as you go along?  Or aleternatively, are you planning on starting a plan as you get in range of your planned races?

I am following the winter maintenance plan with a half marathon plan substituted for the running in the maintenance plan.  I haven't been a diligent as I could be regarding the run workouts and hope to get that corrected very soon as the 1st half marathon of this season I am planning on completing is on April 5th.  When I completed my 1st ever half last year I trained running throughout my tri season that ended in early Sept.  I then shifted to a run only schedule from then until October 19th.  It will be interesting to see how this race prep goes as I will be trying to maintain and build on my swimming and biking while doing the same for running.

Okay, looking for input here.  I'm looking to do a sprint tri (pool) the first week of April, and a half marathon on the 25th (of April).  What do you suggest, in terms of a training plan.  Should I just use one of the sprint plans and adjust the running frequency/mileage?

I've never trained based on a program before.  Just always did a "whatever I was feeling" kind a routine.  Any insights on ways to make sure the transition from free form to a more regimented plan won't suffer any hiccups?

I think you have the right idea.  If I were you I would go to Hal Higdon's website and look at his half marathon training plans.  There is a beginner and intermediate.  I would pick whichever one you think from a volume perspective fits where you are today.  I would then layer a sprint triathlon plan over that (only the swimming and cycling parts).  You may have to get a little creative with the scheduling to make it all work together and with your daily life, etc.  Let me know if you need any other assistance, etc.

I caught the full body cold.  Haven't been able to exercise for two weeks.  Three days in vegas didn't help my recovery.

Sorry to hear that you have been under the weather.  We hope you get better soon and get back at it when you are up to it.  Not fun, I know.

This is not related to much, but I just wanted to share that I've lost 6 lb.s in the last 3 weeks eating more food than I would have imagined (I tried Weight Watchers all year but I don't think it's enough food for an athlete).

When I lifted up my two 3lb dumbbells last night I realized what a difference it might make to race without that extra weight.  I've been trying to lose weight since I had my little one 3.5 years ago...and this is the first time I've made it to the 170's!

Congrats.  Wonderful job.  I know what a challenge weight loss can be!  I too am looking to get into the 170s again.

Hey everyone!

I've had an exciting few days.  I went for my first visit to our LBS...got measured up and bought a tri bike!!  They have a bunch of 2008 Felt S32's on closeout and I was able to get sweet deal.  It'll be in in about a month...I can't wait!

Also...I spent time today in the pool, after my swim, practicing flip turns.  I think I've got it down!  It's been a goal of mine for quite a while and I finally put the time in and got it done.

Hope everyone is doing well.  Anything planned for the weekend?

Just running for me (and maybe some core) - need to start slowly building my volume for an April half marathon.

What stinks is that it will get to 52 tomorrow, then only into the low 30's this weekend (you Michigan folks keep it to yourselves )

Glad to hear that everyone is doing well.  Regarding weight loss and performance...last year I had a flu during the summer and lost about 5 pounds.  The 1st weekend I cycled after being better I amazed at how much faster and quicker I felt.  I've since put those 5 pounds back on (hopefully as muscle because I think I am leaner today than I was then) and can still stand to lose some fat!

That's awesome, Kristen! Meeting goals feels SO great  I ran an LT today...the following are my results:

Running LT Run:

I warmed up, walking briskly, for 10 minutes.

Then, for 10 minutes the following:   175 Avg HR,   183 Max HR

The following 20 minutes produced the following:   181 Avg HR, 186 Max HR

I cooled down, walking briskly, for 20 minutes.

PS. I almost threw up. Surprised

PPS. I ran 6.2 mph for the first mile, 6.0 for the second and 5.5 for the third (average each)

Good job completing the LT test!  Now you can take the 181 avg hr and plug it into the zone calculator (for running) and figure out your proper training zones

Well, I took a nice break from working out this weekend.  Not sure if it was warranted or not, but I did anyway.  Time to get back at it as we are rapidly approaching the end of January.  I only wish it would warm up a bit...cold weather is really getting me down.

How's everyone doing?  Hopefully you are getting in a routine.  If you have any question/concerns please reach out to me or the group.
