You should saty in Z2..its hard some times.  do some speed work once a week so you can get out of it

I can see already that there isn't going to be any since in trying to exercise until the 26th. If I don't post anything before then I hope everyone has a safe and joy filled Christmas.

Don't drink too much Egg Nog.

Tammy, so when you are base building you run in zone 2? I am going to do a LTH this weekend. I am thinking sat or sun. I have a feeling my avg for running hrt is 169 -172. Somewhere in there. I think my max for running mph would 7.5. I don't think I could hold a faster speed for 20 minutes without pulling a muscle. My hip flexor is so irritated right now.

Yes most of your running should be done in Z2..... its WAY easier on your body and has the same benefits as running faster.  I am not one that follows this very well except for my LONG runs... my stride is way more comfy in Z3.  My LT is about 178 alhtough I havent tested it for probaly a year.  Your LT is the low end of Z5...not where you should be training except for tempos and speeed work. (and races)

Today I was running and my last mile I ran at 7.5 mph. That is a fairly comfy speed for me. I like to work hard in my runs. I was paying close attention to my heart rate on the treadmill. It ranged between 165-170. I averaged it in my mind to be 168. I can run faster, but I am not sure I could hold it for 20 minutes.

If my zone 2 tops out at 152, omg that is slow. Like 6.5-6.7 mph. I wonder if I can do it? I guess I can run longer  to burn the calories. I will just have to try the LTH test.

Did you run as hard as you could? I am not sure how hard to push it.

Z2 is slow...mine is 8:36-9:43 pace or 152-161bpm... the low end is fine but once i get in the 9s I get bored.

YOu need to run 30 minutes at hard pace that you are able to hold.... you should do a 10 min warm up before too...but dont count that in your ave HR

I would have a hard time now running in the 9s too. I like to feel my run. I am going to try to train a little slower this year. See if it works. What do I have to lose? It is only 3 months of my life. Laughing

You guys are making me feel really slow. My Z2 is in the 5's I've always been a slow runner even though I do have a running background. I was working on building my edurance for a half back in the fall, got up to 10 miles but have had some inconsistancy with the move and all. So I'm finally back on track. I feel so much slower on the TM ....Missing Florida winters
Hope everyone has a great holiday!

My speed has come in the last 2 years. I was a very slow, methodical runner until 06. I started pushing myself to run faster. Tempo runs and intervals. Once I did start moving at a faster speed my gait changed. Now, it is hard for me to run in the mid-9s. My body starts to hurt, especially my knees.

Warning Long Post......

Training question. I'm 44 years old so my therotical max heart rate is 176?

That would put my zones at:
Z1: 88-105
Z2: 106-123
Z3: 123-141
Z4: 141-159
Z5: 158-176

Like the earlier discussion I want most of my training to be in zone 2, correct? This represents a moderate to fast walk and just doesnt seem right. I'm assuming that if I stay with that zone over time I will need to go faster and faster to maintain this heart rate. Is that correct? I'm shooting for 30-60 minutes at a time in the correct zone seven days a week, does that sound about right? I'll be mixing this up between walk/run and biking so I think I can get away with seven days and the zone 2 doesn't feel all that hard.

So now that Christmas is over, I'm just about ready to really get serious about the training and nutrition. I have one more big event coming that is usually a bad food day for me, Monday the 29th is my anniversary and we usually go out to eat on that day.

George-

I am going to guess your maz HR is going to be higher then that.  the best way to find is to do a LT (lactate threshold )  test.  DONT stop reading- its simple.  And you will get a much more accurate training zones.

For your next run....do a real easy warm up run for ten minutes.   ( I am assuming you have a HR monitor?)  hit the lap button or esart your watch ( you dont want the WU to be included in the test results)  Run a hard pace...something you can hold but couldnt go much harder for 25-30 minutes.  Your ave HR is your LT.  Get me your LT and I will determine your zones for you

I would say 30-60 minutes 3-4 times aweek in Z2 would build a good base...depends on what your goals are though.

Does that make sense?  Can you do that?

Happy Anniversary if I forget on Monday  How many years?

I ate so much yesterday the scale said I was 3 pounds heavier today. That is not good. Not good at all. We are leaving for vacation on Wed. I hope this is water weight!!!Embarassed

I did run today and got some yoga for the core in. Tomorrow I will swim. Sunday I will bike. Monday I will do run and strength train. Tuesday I will swim.

Then I am off for 10 days.  I am hoping the time off will help my hip, which has really been bothering me. I know I strained it. The best thing for it would be to not exercise on it for at least a week, ice and alieve. Last year I sprained my ankle and went through most of the season on a bad ankle. I am hoping I can get the hip healed. I don't want to be dealing with another nagging injury.

I'll do the LT test tomorrow, I thought that 176 seemed kinda low. Though it still looks like it'll be a treadmill test, the roads will still be icy. Staying with only 3-4 times a week would depend on how hard the days are. If they are anything like the walk today I don't think I can only do that few. My greatest goal is weight loss with a good training base to start serious tri training late next year. I plan on a few 5K's next year but that would be about it. And it'll be 24 years on Monday, though it only seems like yesterday.

Never EVER get on a scale the day after a major eating holiday, although I did lose two pounds in the last week. Tomorrow I'll post my actual official weight, something my family doesn't even know.

I hope you get your hip fixed it sounds like you have a fun race schedule next year and being injured is no fun at all. Where are you going on vacation? Hopefully some place warm.

3-4 days minimum- if you can do 5-6  thats awesome!   My LT is actualy about 176-178... I think my max is like 197.  I believe I have a kigher HR then I actually should- oh well.

The lower HR training is suppose to be best for weight loss too.
