shinsplint - 2009-01-11 11:25 AM I have also started a new spin class. We are using our own bike and trainer. I found this very challenging. I have done spin classes on spin bikes. On my road bike I discovered "dead spaces" in my stroke, esp with 1 leg drills. The coach is great. She caught me shrugging my shoulders as I ride and helped me to stop. I am certain this class will be great.

That sounds FANTASTIC! Someome to analyse your technique and help you get better. What a great idea

The gym we belong to is having an indoor tri in 2 mo. I signed up. It will be a super sprint distance. I have not done an indoor tri in several years. The bike portion is on a regular spin bike. It is only 5 miles. Of course, most people will put the bikes on low tension and spin very quickly. I did the same with my first indoor tri. What I noticed when I spin that fast is calf pain/fatigue. It is a different feeling compared to a road bike. Also, the run is more difficult for that reason (calf tihtness). To me, the bike portion does not really simulate a true cycling experience. My upper legs feel ok while my lower legs are toast. Anyone have advice with indoor tri's (aside from have fun?) Val

Hmmm I have never done an indoor tri, but I agree that indoor spin bikes are very different to "real" bikes. Do you have time to adjust the bike to your height etc? Maybe don't spin so quickly, I can imagine that would cause muscle fatigue. Maybe stand up out of the saddle occasionally to stimulate more lower leg work?

Good luck! Let us know how it goes

That is the oddest looking possum that I have ever seen Is that a type of Australian version? Do they get in the same amount of trouble as ours?

Yes its an aussie possum. And yes they get in lots of trouble! The next night, this possum returned with all his friends and they had a massive party on our balcony and tin roof. No sleep was had all night due to the noise. Mental note for the future: don't feed the possums!!!

Out of curiosity, do any of you have sport "favourites"? Do you like swimming more than biking? Running more than all of them?

I personally looooove swimming the most, then running, and I do like biking (only outdoors, though), but I tend never to go too fast because I feel too relaxed.

I like swimming then cycling then running but at the moment I'm starting to like running more as I'm doing more of it.

I'm slightly freaking out at the moment as I've signed up to do a half marathon eeeek

Good morning! Great run! I have to admit I haven't done anything yet today. It may just turn into a rest day, unless I decide to go out tonight

Are you enjoying your taper week?

Cycling > swimming > running !

But I only like to swim in a squad. Otherwise I find it really boring

Yay! You'll love it! How long do you have to train? There's a good program on the silver membership level on this website.

I've entered the ballot for the Great North Run in October which is a big race in the UK. I have a chance of getting a place but if I don't get in then I'll enter the Great Scottish Run in September.

Hi, guys --

And a request for ideas/coaching.  I'm in the Florida Keys.  Yesterday's ocean swim was a delight, and felt really good -- about 20 minutes or so.  Today I tried a wetsuit for the first time... it may have been an issue of fit, as the back of the suit pushed against my neck each time I lifted my head on breast stroke.  I was swimming in quite a bit of wind and chop... but it was VERY HARD work to swim in the wetsuit. This was a sleeveless F2R..which may have been a little big in the top.

Is this normal?  Is it just a different feeling and I have to learn to swim all over?

Comments, please!  I'm down here through Friday noon, and plan to swim in the wetsuit each day if possible.

Good for you! This is a nice distance, not too long. You should recover quickly.
I hope you have fun. You might get hooked!

I might be the only one so far that would prefer to cycle over run and swim. There is something about working hard to get up a hill then flying down the other side. I agree that all sports are better when you are part of a group. So far it is helping make the swim tolerable. Val

Great! Thats plenty of time to train! Start to slowly increase your distances by 5-10% each week so you develop a good base, and then 3-5 monts out start a specific training program. I'll be excited to watch your progress! When do you find out if you got in?

Hmmm ... it may be an issue of fit. They are meant to be ultra tight but comfortable to swim in. This is the borrowed wet suit isn't it? What does it feel like to do freestyle in?

Yes, this is the borrowed wetsuit... today it went better (with less choppy water) - took 4minutes off the total time for the same swim... but I think I'm taking in water either through the rear of the neck or the armpits (sleeveless suit).

Am going to try again tomorrow and Friday, then Monday in the pool with my coach, before I send back the sit to F2R.

I haven't swam in a wet suit but I've done a lot of Scuba in one and if they're ill fitting then the drag can be enormous. It doesn't take much in the water to create drag and make it harder for you so as others have said I would imagine it was a result of the ill fitting suit.

That sounds like a plan - let your coach look at the fit. I don't think its meant to let in water.
