Ok, I drove an hour (one way) to Hilton Head and back and finally after four looooong days of waiting and got my pedals, clips and shoes!!!
After work came home very exited because I was going to finally ride my bike like a pro!! With clips!!! I guess my kids got exited too and they wanted to race me with their little
16" bikes with training wheels.  Off course they beat me and then decided to stop in front of me.  So, today I can officially log my first fall on my bike!!!!!  Just a few scratches here and there, but my ego is like 12 feet under..............
I went for a ride and forgot all the pain, you just got to love this Cervelo! It was late, just ridden for about 10.5 miles and the clips felt GREAT!!!!
On Tuesday, I got my rear kicked pretty badly at the pool. They got me doing all this drills..... Swimming holding to a little stick, kicking and the worst running from side to side of the pool, which is like 10 feet deep!!!! x 6 !!! I swallowed quite a bit of water. The positive side was swimming with the aqua spheres.... dude!!! They are awesome!!! Comfy, never got fogged, they create almost too much suction but easy to adjust and the visibility is great!! Next morning my "real" age started to show in every muscle, but that's fine, I call it bragging rights!!! (Not wining-never!)
Ok, wish me luck on those clips; I don't want to fall again. I got the Speedplay pedals; they are pretty cool but take a while to learn to clip fast.
Sorry David that I haven't posted my goals (times) but I don't really know how I will perform doing all three things back to back.  What I can tell you is that I will bust my rear on that first Sprint tri in June and then I'll have a reference, a time to beat in the future.  Obviously I'll let you know.
Ciao everybody!

Okay--I ran a 10 mile in 1:30 tonight. I could have run 15 with my lungs, but my hips and knees could not have made one more mile. It was slow, but I made it without walking. My pace was good for about 7, and then it was as David said--mind over matter. This is weird but I won a high school state baseball championship, made the UW Husky baseball team and went to the state playoffs in football all 4 of my high school years. But this felt like my greatest accomplishment athletically ever. This took more work and dedication than any of the other stuff.

Let's just say I won't be riding tomorrow. I might not be walking. But I feel great mentally. I'll try for a 40 mile ride on Sunday if I can.

26.24 this morning.  And a little bit of a rant here, but Chicago has a really nice multi-purpose path that goes along the lake.  Inside the city, its really the only place for any long distance biking.  Of course, during the winter, the path gets a little beat up, totally understandable.  A month ago, they tore up some huge sections of the path, just ripped the top concrete layer right off, like they do with roads sometimes.  Well, if yove ever driven over a stretch of road that hasn't been repaved yet, you know your car feels like your in the old west, bouncing over all the ruts and divots and ugliness.  Imagine going over that on a bike.  It's been like that for a month, with no signs of any repaving soon.  And today, going through there, I heard a noise, and realize my back wheel is so beat up, its rubbing against my brake. So i had to stop and readjust it, but I could tell it was seriously warped.

So now I'm calling the city Alderman to complain, and I have to call Performance Bike and ask about wheels.  I thought I was done buying bike stuff for the year, but apparently not.  Ugh.

Was it that stretch just south of north ave beach, heading into the S curve? It's brutal. I haven't gone past north ave for a month, at least. I just loop between Hollywood and north ave, but it's a pain to get any real mileage in.

Add my 7.97 from yesterday evening. Man, it felt great to be outside. I really love biking. Makes me feel like I'm 12 again.

That's how my left knee is, too. I always run slow -- too slow it feels some days -- during the first mile just to check out how it's feeling.

My contribution today... 27.2.

Hit a pothole at mile 22 and spent the next coupla miles trying to decide if my front tire was slowly deflating. It was. Stopped at mile 25 or so and contemplated calling my wife for a ride home, but I really wanted to get in a couple extra miles FOR THE TEAM!!!! (you guys  ) So I stopped and pumped it up a few times in the home stretch.

I think 25 is about my limit... I'm beat!

Tomorrow morning joining a group of road bikers, I think I am just hours from learning my limit .................. ouch, something tells me it's going to hurt!!!!! I just got my bike a week ago.

No pain, no gain!!!!!

The only kind of pain that lingers forever is on my "seating area", so I'm prepared to walk the rest of the week like I'm "carrying" something on my pants. But it's all worth it, I agree with David, riding is exhilarating!!!

David,
Got a few questions regarding swim training
- Do you recommend training in open water (ocean/lake/river)
- What's a good technique for training in the ocean?
- How long should be these sessions?
- Finally, should I get a wetsuit or is that something I can skip for now?
Thanks

PS: Question open for anybody willing to help this rockie.........

I think you only need a wetsuit if your water is really cold (which is why I got mine). I do know that in warmer areas, people wear the sleeveless wetsuits for buoyancy, but I'd imagine that only helps shave off seconds. If the temperature is right, I would just jump right in!! Make sure you've got a fellow swimmer or someone in a canoe/kayak watching out for you. Solo swims are dangerous, especially in open water! I hope that helps...

You East coasters are probably in bed, but your West coast teammate finally did his ride. I did 40 miles. So we're 245.57. Krystyna's 50 inspired me; I was going to go for 50 miles, too. But, I couldn't sit on my seat another 5 minutes so I quit at 40. I was done at 36, but pushed it to 40. I'm sore all over. Maybe we can get 300 next weekend? I think I'm going to try a brick next weekend. Have a great week everyone.

Thanks a lot Kristyna. Yeah, the solo swim freaks me out just to think about it! I'm sure all I'll be thinking about is "Jaws" !!!
I like the comfort of my swiming pool, but I'm a bit concerned because most races are on some sort of open water.  I'll do some research around here and try to find a group that swims somewhere other than a pool. Rivers and lakes around here are know for gators.................. oh well, all for the love to the sport!!!
I guess water temp is getting up there around here, so I'll wait for that wetsuit a bit longer.

I'm jealous about your 50 miles!!!! ................... some day....... soon I hope!

Funny you should mention that, Krystyna, as I was going to reward your awesome effort with the right to choose the next challenge. What do you have in mind?

Let us know by Thursday so we can plan our weekends!
