MASHIE36 - 2009-09-03 3:04 PM So far so good. I have a question: Lipton brisk ice tea unsweetened? The kind you get out of a convenient store soda fountain.

Are you talking about the fresh brewed tea that comes out of the container hot and melts the ice in your cup?  I would think that would be fine as long as you don't add any real or fake sugar to it, b/c that is just tea steeped in hot water.

I have a crazy question for those who have done this in the past:

How much weight loss did you see regularly.  I dropped from 178.0 to 176.8 from yesterday morning to this morning and I know the weight will fluctuate but does cutting sugar help that much that quickly?

I did not have a huge sugar content before hand but now I stopped pop and candy and have really been very healthy.

Just wondering what others results have looked like in the past.  Hoping the 176.8 turns to 170.0 by month end

And Karla - thanks for setting this up!

Bill, I don't recall exactly how much weight I loss the first go round but I want to say it was around 5 lbs and that was with a little (read: month long) hiatus in the middle of it due to a family emergency.  However, I noticed a HUGE difference in my body composition...I was a lot leaner and it showed!

That is where I am noticing it already in the composition.  The body is amazing if you feed it properly.

Last night we took the kiddos out for back to school dinner and I avoided pop, tootsie rolls, and ice cream.  Pretty proud of myself.  And to pay it off I was down 1 more pound this morning.  I hope the scale keeps being nice to me

Hope you guys have a great day and stay strong.

Oh and to help with me getting over my lunch pop I have been saving some grapes from my lunch bag and around 1:00pm I munch on those for some natural sugars   Working so far but it is only the 3rd day.  And we have a long weekend coming up with parties to attend and a fantasy football draft so it shall be interesting!

Yeah, it is amazing how fast you see results with this!   Awesome job on avoiding the junk last night.  It was really surprising to me how sweet stuff is after "re-training" your taste buds.  I still find myself not liking stuff because it is too sweet and that was NEVER a problem for me before!!!

Rotorkim - 2009-09-03 7:51 AM Thanks for the info on alcohol, Karla! I was prepared to put on X on the board for last night's two-beer night at the local pub, something I don't do very often, but just happened to come up during these first few days of the challenge. But with beer and wine being OK, I don't need to add an X yet.

This challenge has been great! No soda for the past three days, and I've been avoiding my co-worker's stash of chocolate (I usually steal two or three pieces of dark chocolate every day). There's also a bin of little lemon cakes someone brought in on Monday. So I had one on Monday because I could, but not since. This weekend will be tough as we'll be visiting grandparents for a 96th birthday party (about 30 people invited, and grandpa loves to make pies and cakes). I'll have to hold off to the allowed ONE piece of birthday cake, but to avoid grandpa's pies -- well, I don't want to hurt his feelings. A piece of grandpa's pie might have to be the first X! Will let you know on Tuesday when we get back (no Internet access where they live in Northern Wisconsin, ya der hey!).

You can always have a mini piece of each instead of one bigger piece of cake

mekira - 2009-09-03 11:25 AM I understand about the rules and it's ok if I'm not eligible to the prize It's very much for health issues that I wanted to join and I wasn't sure if the cutoff was August 31 or September 1st. I'll do this 'unofficially' and it's fine with me. So I'll go post my starting weight (that I took on September 1st). Yesterday was my birthday so I definitly had cake lol (good way to start the challenge huh!) Tonight I'm going out for diner and it will be a challenge to try to avoid process sugar but I'll try. I'm glad we can have beer cause I'm having one tonight.... Patricia

Happy belated Birthday!!!

Yeah.  Tea is fine.  I'm assuming its just brewed tea?  You could always look up the brand online, to research the exact one that you are asking about, but if it is not sweetened, then it should be fine.

Wow - last night was brutal.  My brain was trying to convince me that a pop or candy bar would not kill me (which I agree with but still fought it off).  Our brains are so conditioned to our past habits - brutal.

So now I will not take my son for a slurpee (or just give him the money so I don't have to go inside).  Every where I turned there was glorious junk food

But I fought it off and have survived another day.

You guys have a great weekend and stay strong!  Enjoy Labor Day!

Kelly (guess I should spell your name right ) - it is because of this challenge and only because of the challenge.  I don't care about winning I just want to stay strong.  It is all about breaking bad habits.  This weekend is going to be tough because here is our typical schedule:

Tonight - Fantasy Football Draft and my buddy's wife is a baker and chef extraordinaire!  This is going to be tough.

Saturday - football game (son) and then we go get a snack at 7-11 which always includes pop or a slurpee and junk food.  Habits

Sunday - Church brunch - baked goods all over and then usually Tim Hortons for a snack which always includes a chocolate dipped donut and a pop in there as well at some point - Habits

Monday - Labor Day - Birthday Party (good thing I don't like cake but the other treats are too tempting) - Habits

We just have to find a way to break the habits and we will all be good.  Hopefully my family sees it and starts to change their habits as well!

I hear ya on avoiding things just because of this challenge ~ hence the reason I joined AGAIN!
My hubby was not thrilled with the idea of this challenge the last time 'cuz he knew some of it would be forced on him since I do most of the shopping and cooking.  After it was all said and done he commented about how he had managed to lose a couple of pounds because of it.  Sooo, when I told him I was doing it again I was not met with nearly as much resistance!!
Have a great weekend and stay strong!

I was just telling my husband tonight that this challenge seems to be easier this time around-tell me if you agree, Karla and Michelle.  I think a lot of it is that last time I really broke myself of a lot of bad habits (like you say, Bill), and this time it seems to be more about cutting back on splurges than having to deal with the everyday sugar addiction like I had before.  Definitely an encouraging thought to think I might very well be changing my habits (almost without realizing it)!!

I agree!  I definitely felt less "addicted" to sugar coming into this go-round.  The temptation is still there, but MUCH easier to resist.  I hope that I can make more progress on eliminating mindless munching (even if the munchies are healthy) and improving portion control.  When I am training a lot, I end up so hungry that lately I have been gaining instead of loosing weight - and its not all muscle, believe me!  So I need to get things headed in the right direction.

1st big temptation of this challenge:  Today I volunteered at a local tri (I was supposed to be racing, but my foot is currently injured).  They said they would have breakfast for the volunteers, so I ate a peach around 4:45 a.m. and then hit the road.  When I got to said breakfast there was coffee (good), donuts (a weakness for me), and huge blueberry muffins...and nothing else!!  I was so bummed (and hungry).  I took a good long look at the breakfast, and just walked away with my coffee.  Later I snagged a banana from the race food tent.

After the race, my husband (who did race), the kids and I went to a local burger joint where I had a big juicy burger...and a salad instead of fries!  I didn't even eat one from my hubby's plate!

VICTORIOUS!!!

I totally agree with you both!!!  Like you said Karla, I feel more like I'm avoiding the "treats" than overhauling all my bad habits (this should give the rest of you some hope as I was a total sweet addict!!!.)  However, I'm totally jonesing for my catsup (I left you an inspire Kelly!!)

Well as I had expect I made it a long time at the Fantasy Football Draft being good but then the desserts came out and so I used my mulligan last night - 1 dessert.

I put down that I used it in the logs and the date - do I do anything else?

Stay strong this weekend everyone!  Have a great holiday!

No you don't need to do anything else.
Just think how far you've come already...I'm sure there would have been a lot more junk going in had it not been for this challenge, huh?!

Nice job, Kelly!!  I'm thinking those blueberry muffins would have been calling my name!

Speaking of calling my name (and fries) my hubby and I had lunch out yesterday and I had fries on my plate.  I told my hubby that they were all his and we even loaded my plate with catsup (I don't think he truly believed I would be able to resisit since I was actually eating off the same plate) but I will have you know....even with the catsup SCREAMING at me, I didn't touch the fries or the catsup (except to give my daughter one)

WoW!  Kelly and Michelle, you guys are both awesome!!!  I haven't faced that kind of temptation yet.  I hope I will be as strong!

Michelle, your catsup is my peanut butter, so one of my personal goals for this challenge is to limit myself to one serving per day (2T).  So far pretty good on that.  I never eat it out (except at Panera), but it is easy to go overboard w/ it at home, especially when training volume is high.

Nice!!!  Very impressive.  Keep me posted on the catsup search...I will be happy to feed your addiction minus the sugar!!

I have a little addendum to my day of trials...my husband decided he wanted to take the boys out for ice cream after dinner.  I popped some gum in, and fed my 3 yo ice cream (pumpkin pie--one of my faves) without even a lick!!  So hard.

After I came home and tried a new "recipe" that I saw online.  Put a frozen banana w/ a bit of cream in the food processor or blender, and blend it up....voila, ice cream!!  I sprinkled a few pecans on top, and it was so good!!

For all of you ketchup fiends out there.  Try this.  I leave out the artificial sweetener(an obvious for this challenge).  There are a ton of homemade/sugar-free recipes out there but this is by far the simplest one that I've found.

Huh...who knew!  Thanks a ton, I will be trying it today but I have NO CLUE what onion juice is and where do I get it?!  And for you smart allecs out there...don't you dare tell me it's juice from an onion!    Does it have to be onion juice or can I use powder/salt?

Oh yeah, I have no idea what onion juice is. I just use onion powder. I also put some chili powder and a sometimes some cayenne pepper in too. You just have to play around with it and see what fits your tastes.
