PennState - 2010-07-27 7:30 AM I'm in for this race

Wow, lots of people from BT will be there.  We should meet up somewhere for a group shot.  We may want a group shot BEFORE the event so some of us don't look like zombies.

The pre-race dinner at this race is unlike any you've ever been to.  As in, the quality of the food is legit!

I'm on the website but for some reason, I'm having a tough time finding the times on when the pre-race dinner, packet pickup, etc.

Too further you’re your knowledge.

SavageMan Bike course has

x2 HC climbs
x1 Cat 1 climb
x2 Cat 2 climbs
x1 Cat 3 climbs
x2 Cat 4 climbs

It’s still fun.  The one climb I found to be the most challenge was Killer Miller.  It’s around 40 miles in the course and very steep.  The cow will be just laughing there utters off at you.

Those classifications are "Savage" classifications and certainly don't correspond to Tour de France mountain stage classifications.  Westernport / Big Savage would likely get a Cat 2 and everything else a Cat 4 just because they're so short.  Doesn't make them any less legit, though.  I've ridden the entire 2007 Tour de France route, including all mountain stages, and Garrett County climbing is the real deal.  Not the highest mountains or the longest climbs, but they make up for it by forgoing switchbacks to just go straight up instead.

Pector55, we're working out the weekend timeline details.  This is the first year we've separated out the 30.0 and 70.0 onto separate days, so that's complicating the timeline a bit.  Don't fret, though, packet pickup will be available for the 70.0 on Friday and Saturday afternoon / evening.

I'm borderline ditching a HIM in TX and picking up Savageman.  Anyone know how late you can generally register, i.e. when I should make sure I make up my mind by?

Also, Pector - you stole my sig line!!  And its the inspiration for my entire blog!  (btw - I hear Kenny's coming back in September, finally!)

Kyle - Is the bike check-in/packet pickup for the 30.0 going to be on Friday this year?

For anyone who hasn't been there - very awesome race!  Great venue, and the support (and after race food) is better than any other I've seen!

Thanks!

You should get registered before the HIM sells out.

Kyle,

Thanks for the info.  Didn’t think those ratings compared to the tour just kind of left off the "Savage" part.

Weekend timeline will be posted shortly.  Packet pickup / bike racking for the 30.0 is preferred on Friday evening, but permitted very early Sat. AM before the race.

Standard crank with 38/52 chain rings

Rear cassette Miche 12/27

Using a 50/34 compact tried the course on an 11-23 and 11-26.

As a mid pack AG'er on the bike the 23 is t-o-u-g-h. Nearly un-clipped on Miller/Maynardier.

The 26 is doable (but couldn't quite clear the "Wall").

Bought a 28 last week to use for the race.
I've read that a 11-28 requires a Ultegra6700 RD or DA 7900 RD. The article said older 10s RD couldn't handle the 28.

PennState - 2010-08-04 9:44 PM So what gearing have people decided on for this race?

Gearing?  I was going to use a 34/50 with a 12-27 but I decided that I'm just using my son's BMX bike.  I look cool with the seat all the way down.

Oh, and check out how cool my seat cover looks!

Since I just got slapped with a nice little fine from the state I'll be sticking to my standard with a 12-25. If I can swing it I'll be putting on a 12-27. The more I actually think about it I'm not to worried about the gear as I've been doing better climbing than I thought I would.

Speeding (while on your bike?)

If so, I'm definitely impressed.

I'm going to do a test ride in the next two weeks on a 50/34 + 12/25... hoping that's sufficient but will likely be going with a 28 rear for the race.  I'm thinking I'll just bite the bullet and order an 11-23 while I'm at it so I'll have the gears for any race I need.

I felt that compact + 12/25 was perfect for Lake Placid, but having done both races I can tell you that Lake Placid grades are nothing like Savageman grades.  Last time I did savageman I was 40+ pounds heavier, and used a triple with a 12/28... and needed every gear.

A buddy and myself are doing a recon ride on 8/20, plan on wheels rolling from parking lot at 9am if others want to join up.  2 years ago I also used a triple and 12/28.  It was my first half (what was I thinking signing up for it), needless to say the course tore me up.  Hoping I'm a better climber this time around.

So Josh, are you going sub 5 hours at savageman?

(smack talk begins)

I bow to anyone going sub 5 at SM.

There is a race within a race more or less at Savageman.  The big Savage Mountain climb starting at the base of the WALL.

I should throw up a wager and try to win some of the beer back.
