Heres one for you, last night when we were going to bed I told my husband someday I would do an Ironman, he laughed (remember I just ate the sinful sundae and am trying to fit exercise into our busy lives) and told me if I complete that he would give me a massage for a hour EVERYNIGHT for a full month! Man I can't wait for that to come true!!! He is great really, I would have never got involved in any of this if it hadn't been for him. Well then, we need to start your IM training immediately. |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED This being the start of the 2 most unproductive training weeks of the year, what is everyone's plan? I will be on the road for the next week. 3 more days in Syracuse, 2 days in CT, then 2 days RI. I won't be sleeping in my own be until Sunday. I feel like a traveling salesman. I will be running this week and getting back to biking and swimming next week. I need to watch the food intake. I will be around this week. |

That's how mine went today and couldn't be happier! ( I hear there's a vote for our leaders name? Have to keep it simple and short so when yelling uncle you're able to say it loud enough to be heard while being out of breath from a killer work-out.) Anyone else still running outside in the cold and snowy conditions-gave it a try today but ended up down in the cellar on the Elip instead. Have to keep up my running as I have 10 days till my Saratoga First Night 5K--1,000 runners so it should be fun. Being held at 5:30pm so it should be a nice cooool race. Yup, still running in the cold and snow. went out for a nice slow 3 miler with my son yesterday. Only issue I have with the cold is that my new shoes are not waterproof and my toes got really cold. Trying out the "barefoot" thing with minimalist shoes since I'm not quite ready to run in the sleet and snow with nothing on the sole of my feet. |

Veteran 280 Glens Falls | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED I don't mind the running in the snow thing (with sneakers on of course--just can't go bare foot--yet??) It's those freezing temps that knock me down a few pegs. And as for the two toughest training weeks with the holidays--WILL POWER, gotta have it!! Easy to say, but hard to do. |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED I paid her to write stuff so it looks like I have other friends She is our friend from the North. I ended up doing a HIM relay this summer as a fill in and Helen was part of the team. She has a lot of energy and a mouth like a truck driver and is very good hearted. She is also doing a mentor group with another good friend of mine, so we may have some outsiders checking in. I can set up a password protected site to keep the "others" out if you would like.

Expert 1128 Boston | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Since I don't have any holiday plans, other than the family for Xmas day...my schedule won't really change. Except my gym is closed Xmas, so I will have to figure something out as that is my elliptical day. Maybe go for a nice walk at Walden Pond. As far as the diet goes...I am pretty determined. SO other than Xmas day, again nothing should change for me. |

Extreme Veteran 310 | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Well, unlike Seren, I will probably be a major slacker the next couple of weeks. I'll take the kids to the YMCA a couple of times and that's probably going to be the extent of it. This is my biggest "vacation" of the year. Then I'll hit it hard with the rest of the New Years crowd. |

Boy I would really excel to have her. My kids are out of school until Jan 2. Nothing like being on the treadmill for only 35 minutes and hear multiple times, "his touching me, shes pinching me, MOM, MOM, MOM! and thats only two of them, the other two will join us tomorrow! 4 little voices screaming it. lol I love them, but this time of the year when you can't go outside and play makes it hard. Hope everyone had a great day. |

As those in the medical field will know, those of us in Law enforcement are also some of the most cynical SOB's around. So, I'm not offended and appologize in advance when I offend others in the future. Moving on. I haven't figure out yet how to respond to each others indidvual comments on this blog so I will address a couple things I read. Michigan (gobluedds) - How do you like running in those minimalist style shoes? I pick some up after reading some articles on them to try it out. My original assessment was they were great but then I got a IT band injury and have been reflecting a bit on them. I have been running for ten+ years and never had a problem with "regular" kicks so I have probably answerd my own ?? |

Veteran 280 Glens Falls | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Noticed that it was requested that I add more to my blog-pictures etc so "someone" could make fun of me--now why would anyone want to do that-have tried the picture thing but they keep coming back-To Big?? Have to get a son to help me with that--now back to training. I have had a string of very nice work outs and can feel myself gathering speed. Am quite new to running and suffered quite a bit with calf pain. But after talking with a Tri-coach (did a consult with him for 1.5 hours @ $50-well spent) he suggested a couple of things which I tried and they worked rather well for me. One of the best pieces of advice was to buy "The Stick" I purchased the travel size and use it sometimes 3 times a day on my calfs and they now feel great. Not sure if anyone else has this problems or has already gotten a stick. But I personally recommend one--great Christmas gift to yourself. (see, I can be serious) |

That's good to know. A name and badge number would be more helpful, especially since I will driving the NY State Thruway a lot the next couple of months. Where is he located? |

My original assessment was they were great but then I got a IT band injury and have been reflecting a bit on them. I have been running for ten+ years and never had a problem with "regular" kicks so I have probably answerd my own ?? I love my new shoes...for the most part. I'm still adjusting to the cold weather in them and fear that soon it will be too cold to run outside in them. My toes tend to get really cold if there is any moisture on the ground. As far as having any pain issues, I did a lot of research before I bought them and talked to a lot of people who already had them. The biggest thing I found was that you can't start out running at your regular pace and distances in them. Everybody told me to start out really slow. I thought I would have an advantage over most people since I am already barefoot most of my day. The only time I wear shoes is at work or when I'm training. It really takes a lot more time than I thought to condition your legs to running barefoot. I felt so good doing 1/2 to 1 mile runs after a week of wearing them I thought no problem to run a 5K race in them. I completed the race no prob, but then the tightness began. Haven't been in so much discomfort since I first got into training a year and a half ago. It was too much too fast. Now I don't have anymore pain in the legs when I run. I didn't really have a lot of problems with pain with my old shoes either except when I tried to wear the shoe the local running shop owner told me I needed to wear. I just wanted to try to get away from buying new $130 running shoes every 3 months because the cushion was worn out. The five-fingers I wear now were only $70 and should easily last me 6-9 months based on the mileage most people get out of them. (800-1000 miles is what i hear most often) |

Veteran 280 Glens Falls | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Ok, back to work. Having a lot of good work outs on the Elip, wind trainer, rowing machine and total gym (have a nice array of equipment in cellar. But swimming is my down fall at this time. I belong to the local YMCA but they are always packed with people so getting in lap time is becoming very difficult. Any type of work outs that I should do in order to benifit myself when I do get some pool time or to stimulate the swim-going to flounder when spring finally arrives and I get back to the lake. |
