>UPDATE: Here are the options for sprint distance races, close to me, in the first half of the season... Thoughts?
Black Bear - June 6 - $95 - an hour away
Philly Insurance - June 26 - $140 - on my doorstep
Philly Women's - July 11 - $105 - on my doorstep
NJ State - July 24 - $100 - an hour away
FWIW I've done the Philly Insurance sprint the last two years with some of my friends. Swimming in the Schuylkill sounds bad but to be honest, it was a lot nicer (cleaner) than some of the places I did ows in training. The race is well organized but it can get crowded on the bike. My friends are moving up to the olympic this year so I might end up doing that just for fun because it's only two weeks after my HIM. I haven't done the other races so I can't comment on them but I think you'd be happy with Philly. Art

thanks Art

question for you- is it a wetsuit race?

coming from the midwest, that's not something i'm used to

thanks

Hey Lisa! I talk too much in this thread already, but I'm surfing now, so what the hey.

Friday -- Rushed to make up for a semester's worth of errands I ignored, before the snow started coming down. Contacted lots of people about swim lessons.

Saturday -- Snowed in. Indoor chores.

Today -- Shoveled snow, made a date for my first swim lesson on Tuesday, and got an UNBELIEVABLE early xmas present from Brian's mom! It's HARD... but it's FUN... and now I don't have to quake with terror on Philly roads!

Rollers are great! I used to work for SPINFitness (the creators of Spinning and the whole indoor cycling deal) and they always had Spinner bikes as well as rollers and trainers around ... I forgot how easy it was just to fit 15 minutes in here, there ...

I found rollers are awesome for mental training and to some extent road awareness as well, because they require a certain focus at all times. You really get the feel for the bike while learning to look ahead.

They take a while to get comfortable with, but anyway ... if you use the Search function to look up "rollers," there are a LOT of great threads on how to get used to them and then workouts to do once you do.

Hello Manatees.

I obtained a pair of free rollers and have never used them.  I am thinking about listing them on Craigslist actually.  I've never even tried them in the year + I've had them though.  I figured if I can't stand up most days what chances have I got with rollers?

I had a miserable weekend *Insert Debbie Downer here*  Just in lots of "That time" pain. It really does suck and it affected my back more this time around.  So there you have it.  My weekend in a nutshell.

I feel better today though, just as we say in Scotland "Crabbit".

Happy Monday all!  I have off today and tomorrow.  Have to work Wed and Thu but I am the only one on my team in and basically the entire company is on vacation since we have use it or lose it and everyone waits till the end of the year.  Plus, I work from home so it will be a very relaxing 2 weeks for me!  Basically check e-mail every so often

Got my hour ride in earlier and will not do my scheduled run.  I really jacked up my calves on the elliptical on Saturday.  May swim instead.

Beth- While it has been wetsuit legal the last couple of years, the water temps have been in the low-mid 70's so you easily could go without one. Since I'm not as strong a swimmer as you are, I'm using the wetsuit!

Tomorrow I'm going to my first beginner's tri training group!  Kind of nervous about it as it feels like something athletic people do, not me..

Kia kaha
(a kiwi expression, translates as 'be strong')

How did it end up going, Melyssa?

Hiya there... yeah it was good actually.  Noone was as scary as I thought they'd be, the coach is nice, and I was pleasantly surprised that my bike riding seemed adequate, even though i'm still riding a mountain bike.. If i can get to the run tonight, that will no doubt be a lot harder! :P

Hi everyone

Well my weekend was spent working on the second S in the SMARTS plan!  Baby came down with chicken pox on saturday morning, she also has ear infection, so going out to train hasn't really been an option.  (Neither has christmas shopping )

On the positive side, this convinced me I needed an indoor trainer for my bike so at least I can do something at home when kids asleep.  So I picked up one second hand, not sure I have it set up right, it's quite noisy, is that usual?  Also it's hot, midsummer here.  My other positive note was that I did manage to get to my first fitness assessment by the coach of the tri group this morning.  He estimated my VO2 max at 65, so he said (theoretically) I'm well suited to endurance sports! of course he hasn't seen me run.... (Like a duck, apparently, and not much faster)
Anyway that has motivated me to keep training through the christmas season, even if it is a logistical nightmare.

anyone want to swap their snow for blazing sun?  I prefer the cold... :P

Melyssa

Hey everybody! What did everyone do this weekend?

I did the shovel/snowblower thing Saturday evening and Sunday morning. My back is pretty sore today so I'm going to do some yoga this evening. Must be getting old....

We had a reception at our house for one of my nieces. She lives in Mexico and this was the first time they could make it. They flew in Saturday during the storm. Their flight from Houston to NY got cancelled but they got an earlier flight into Newark, NJ, go figure.

The computrainer that I bought with the insurance money from the nice old lady that sent me to the hospital last summer came over the weekend. Merry Christmas to me!

Since Christmas came early this year (lol), I'm a little behind on my shopping so I'll be busy the next couple of days. Any gift suggestions are welcome.

Have a good week everybody!

Yanti - You better believe I've been rooting through that stuff, and there's a good video too.

Lisa - I have used them! They are TOUGH (especially for someone who's been cycling for less than 6 months) but weirdly fun! I actually like how they make you concentrate... but I'm still not out of the doorway yet, haha.

Lynne - Hope your uterus feels better!

Melyssa - Sounds like you've found a great group! Sorry to hear that your baby is sick.

Art - I heard that a couple of airlines waived the change fee for people holding Saturday tickets, to encourage them to fly Friday night. Intelligence from the airlines, whoda thunk?

First swim lesson tomorrow... gotta go shave so I don't embarrass myself before I even get in the water...

Sorry to hear about the baby. We have both a magnetic and fluid trainer. The magnetic is much noisier than the fluid. Don't feel bad, for me duck speed would be an upgrade.

I got to the gym today.  Did a 30 minute run on the treadmill.  I did a 4 minute walk and 1 minute run.  I miss the days when I could run longer.

Hi there, sorry I havent been around! Its the season!

I am well.. will be 35 next month. I am a newbie. I am signing up for sprint tri in June ( Fatrabbit tri) then go from there... I hope I will be bit by the tri bug! I am a decent swimmer but need to work on my endurance... that goes for cycling too. what I suck at is running.  I do like swimming and cycling.

I have goal of Jan 4th to start training (at least start walk/jog) 3x a week to build up. I hope I can do it. I really want to accomplish this goal. I probably will start swimming and cycling a lot more often when it warms up.

I am situated in Ohio. I am married and I have three young kids, (under age 6) and work full time. I am planning to learn how to run during my lunch hour here at work for now... We do have a little gym here at work but I seem to like to walk/jog outside than on the treadmill. I just need to figure out how many city blocks equals what? I tried to find it online but it varies greatly in different cities. I guess I need to do some more search, maybe mapquest the point a to B and see what it says...

well I probably wont be around much this week but I do plan to be here more often starting Jan!

Thanks for having me!

Great to have you Marcea and thanks for the details!

Yes, city blocks can vary a lot within the same city, even ... I really like MapMyRun.com for mapping runs and distance. Huh! I wonder if it works for Indonesia! (Must try)

That does work, and the links work. So Manatees, if you go to Beth's log (click Log button under one of her posts), copy the Manatee table, go to your own log, click Edit near the top, and paste. Voila!

I found a swim buddy on BT!  Someone posted that she was looking for someone to meet up with at my local pool, and I *gulp* made to commitment to meet her 2x a week at 6 am after the new year.  Now, I need to figure out what I am going to be DOING during my swim workouts 2x a week at 6 am.  She's a really accomplished runner and cyclist but I am trying to convince myself not to be intimidated, because we don't have to be at the same fitness level to work out in adjoining lanes, right?  Right?  (Sorry, I am REALLY nervous about this!).  Fell off the wagon a bit the past few days, but I got out for a 3 mile run  this afternoon and feeling much better that I can actually do this again.

I am going to invest in a BT membership to get access to more training programs.  I am also trying to decide if I should go for a half marathon in March at the same time that I am training for my May tri.  I do want to increase my running distances...

I've never used rollers or a trainer before.  I am very intrigued!  I would love to be able to ride in my living room while watching TV at night, but I don't think it would happen.  No room here.

Awesome, and awesome. Swim buddy!!!

I'm sure Beth and I can suggest some good workouts that will improve your swim fitness ... I don't see in your logs that you've been swimming at all; have you? That's fine; we can give you some great beginner stuff.

BT membership, in my opinion, is one of the very best returns-on-investment you can get in this sport. And no, I do not work for these guys

Two months is plenty of time to recover from a half-mary into a tri ... actually, half-mary doesn't take that much recovery time, so it won't dent your tri training. And you will make remarkable improvements in short-course ("short" = tri distance) running from doing the longer running training for a half-mary.

What half-mary training plan are you following or planning to follow?

I haven't been regularly swimming -- I took some basic lessons back in August, but was really focussed on learning to run and do my first 5K in Sept/Oct/Nov.  I need to add the other sports now!  My last swim was last month and I do know that I can barely make it one length of the 50m long course.  I have a lot of work to do on swim and don't know where to start.  Starting by committing to going to the pool at least 2x a week is probably the best start!  As for the half, I haven't picked a program yet -- DH used Higdon for his marathon training, so I will look into that.  My goal for Jan, I think, is run 3x, swim 2x, and bike or spin 2-3 times a week.  If I can do that, it will be amazing for me!  I've looked at the Ruth couch to 1mile swim program, but that's a 2x a week program.  I may see if I can both spin and swim on Sat ams to make it 3x a week for swim.  Ack, it's so much to think about!
