kali0824 - 2010-04-08 9:05 AM Thanks you guys!  I had no idea it was much easier on the treadmill.  That would have been a rude awakening on race day.  Will have my mom watch the kids while I run in her neighborhood.  No hills, but there is a bridge run every Thursday night I am thinking about joining.  Maybe that will be my hill workout.
I think the mentor thing will really help.  Thanks for all the answers!

I am going to let you in on a little secret of the Ghoulies!

If you offer up a pitcher of margarita's there will half a dozen of us there within the hour to babysit for you.

You better be offering up a bike - Bill does not babysit - sorry

Bill will run or bike with you while NJKim, Robin, Stacie, and I take care of the kids... and the margarita's.

Sounds like the better option   Not that I dislike children - I have 2.  But they are past babysitting ages!!!

Haha! Sounds good to me... I will also watch kids but only for pina coladas!

All of what Bill said + if you can get outside to run AT ALL it would help you. Running on the road is a lot harder on the body than running on a treadmill. The treadmill is much more forgiving.

Wow!  Just got back from running 3 miles outside.  Wind sucks...until is stops blowing and then I get really hot.  Much better view though than the wall I have to admit.

WOOHOO!!!

Here is another little known fact. You will run/bike in headwinds and crosswinds, but NEVER with a tailwind. I don't believe they actually exist. There are some that say they do, they often encounter them while they are riding their white unicorns and eating calorie free Oreos. I'm just sayin.

Ann(e) Calorie Free Oreos are vastly overrated!  Go with the Fudge Covered ones and all will be well!

Unicorns - well I ride my bike as fast as one can run so there you go!

Not a fan of fudge Mr Graves, too sugary.

How about calorie free bacon! I mean the good stuff, too. Not the paper thin junk with no taste. Calorie free thick hunks of bacon. MMMMMMMMM MMMMM!!!

I'm still working on the solar powered toaster for your bike, and the 6-bike trailer (You might as well haul mine, too.) I don't know if I have time to come up with a solar powered bacon fryer for you. I would think bacon would be higher on the priority list than poptarts though.

kali0824 - 2010-04-08 5:31 AM Goodmorning all!  Today, I have a run planned on the treadmill for 3 miles and then strength training.  I wish I could run outside but I have a six and three year old that I have to put in the gym daycare.  So far I have only been running on the treadmill.  Is it significantly different than running outside?  Are you faster, slower?  Is it harder to maintain a steady pace?

Thanks for tolerating my dumb questions!!

Hey Kali. I'm sure someone's already answered this, but I'll throw in my 2 cents anyway. Running on the treadmill is definitely different than running outside, but it's still running. The big differences are that the treadmill maintains your pace for you and is a much softer surface. If you have joint issues it may be a good option, especially as you're building your base.

As far as the pace thing, my opinion is that the TM is actually a very good tool to help you learn what a certain pace "feels" like. When you transition to the road try to remember that feeling and that should help you learn to maintain a steady pace on the road as well.

MarlaS - 2010-04-08 5:52 AM y'all are exhausting me before I've even had a cup of coffee.....this morning exercise thing ain't for me. I WAS going to ride my bike on the trainer at soccer practice, but forgot the block, so no bike ride yesterday.Got in an hour with the (personal) trainer at least. Will play hooky with the bike this morning if I can find some paved paths - promised family I wouldn't ride near traffic until I stop falling. Seems reasonable. Then have running group homework with daughter when it cools off / dark hits, whichever's first.

Am going to brew the coffee....have a swell day!

Sulcus - 2010-04-08 7:06 AM Good morning all!

I hope there is still room for another.  I am entering my second year of triathlons and I am really struggling with consistency, which for an overweight Clyde isn't exactly optimal.  I love the attitude in here and the fact that some of you have already conquered the weight issue.  I won't lie - I'm also a total sucker for inspires becuase they motivate me so having a group that does them would be great!

I have already been trying to send this for over two hours but work is decidely not cooperating with my BT usage, so I will have to get my "official" bio up later today.

Shawn

Hey Shawn! It's great to have another Ghoulie Clyde on board. I'm definitely with you on having issues with consistency. Let's work on just making sure that the workouts we are able to do are as good as possible and have some fun while we're out there. I don't know about you, but my training time is my ONLY me time. Learn to love it bud!

bigr82 - 2010-04-08 7:40 AM Is everyone/anyone in a local tri group?

After going to a different bike shop than normal, found out that there is a tri group about 40 mins away. Seems like they do ALOT, with racing, training, etc.  Other than training with Mike &  a few other Bter's, pretty much do it solo. Just curious what the overall thoughts are.

I've considered joining the big local tri club, but I don't think I"ll do it anytime soon just because my schedule is always so up in the air. I DO go on group rides with some folks at my LBS once per week. There are actually many of them who meet up almost daily for various workouts. I think I may take them up on some swimming workouts soon, but I'll keep my runs mostly solo.

And that;s the deciding factor for me. My main experience on treadmills on onboard ships out to sea (Navy, not Carnival). After 4 deployments worth of only being able to look at a white-painted steel wall as I run, I'll take the outdoors anytime Glad you had a good run out there!

Hi All,

I am Nichi.  New to triathlons in the last year.  My roommate from college encouraged me to do one along with another close friend from my highschool days.  Facebook is wonderful for connecting!  Anyway, they both said-yeah you can do it in 8 weeks.  I started the couch 2 5K in April 2009 and got the itch to do the triathlons at the end of June.  Did my first 5K on August 8th and my first tri on August 23rd.  It was awesome.  Absolutely loved it!

Family- married to my husband Troy for 21 years.  Mom to Tyler,14,Cassidy 11, Tory 6 and Cole 3.

Unfortunately, I have some kind of knee? injury that has kept me from running for 3 weeks.  I am getting crabby!  basically, I wish I could find out what is wrong.  Going to Doctor tomorrow.  He wants to give me a cortisone shot.  Anyone ever had one?  Is this a good idea? I am unable to run without limping and have only been able to run 1 mile since the 20th of March.

After running all winter and having a wonderful time doing the Crappy Winter Weather Challenge-earning over 15,000 points I might add) , it is extremely difficult to have the nice spring weather and not be able to run!  Okay, I will let you know what happens.  Any suggestions?

Yes, I do have a foam roller and no, I don't think it is IT band(massage therapist and chiropractor-both said no)

Today is a beautiful day-glad to be a goulie mentee!

Amen Mike. Personally, that was my biggest hurdle when I started getting into endurance events. I used to get so darn bored, but I fixe that by 1) going outside, 2) having an occasional running partner, and 3) mixing it up and not running the same loop every time. Variety is the spice of life!

Thanks for the intro Nichi! Can you describe your knee pain a bit? The odds of one of us having gone through something similar is pretty high. Also, check out the Injury and Illness forum. I learned a lot there when I was going through my ITBS. Get better soon!

Welcome

Hard to say about the knee injury, but I feel your pain, literally. Do you have a good pair of well fitting running shoes? Sometimes it is as simple as the shoes.

Haven't heard about the cortizone shots though. I had them in my foot once upon a time. They helped with plantar fasciitis then. Good luck. Hope you can be running injury free soon.
