Decided to see how far I could jog in the 1.5 hours I had to workout yesterday morning.  Got 10.68 miles in.  Not bad since I'd never jogged more than an hour in my life before.  Maybe my goal of a HIM before the end of next year isn't as crazy as I thought.

Good luck and try to hit the starting line fresh.

I did my first workout on the roller this morning.  Did 30 minutes and it only took about 3-5 minutes to get the hang of them using the horns.  Now getting down into the time trial/tirathlon position - I'll be working on that more on Wednesday.

When you can pedal one legged with no hands and get a drink out of the cage at the same time, then you've got something. :D

Where are you in the plan? If it's still early, you have a bit more wiggle room. I wouldn't worry about tapering or anything, but give yourself a day off at least afterward. Good luck!

Month 2 week 2.  I'm not really that worried.  1-1.5 hours won't be all too different from a long run or ride.

That'll be right up there with walking on water in my book.

Getting back in the groove as yesterday I did a 3 mile run at lunch and swim lessons in the evening.  Now I'm off to show those rollers who's boss.

This is my last week of "prep" before I officially kick off the off-season.  I changed my workouts around and managed to get in S, B & R 3 times each last week - all at easy to easy/moderate paces - and a couple of weight-lifting sessions.

Raced a Sprint this weekend.  Really hilly bike course, which if you know my hometown of Houston posed a problem for me.  You can't get hills w/o driving 45+ minutes outside the city here.  Did PR on the run by over 30 seconds though.

Thanks.  Hope to set another this weekend at my last tri for the season.  Hope my bike time is better too since the course should be mostly flat.  If I can top 10 my AG in my first year of doing tris, granted it's a sprint, I'll be ecstatic.

How had does everyone think it would be to jump over to the HIM plan?  I think I've figured out a way to 1. Cut back my ST time to where I'm happy there while freeing up s/b/r time and 2. will begin weekend rides with guys who ride 50+ miles regularly.

Thoughts???

Give me some more background info first. Why do you want to jump up to the HIM plan? It's totally fine if you are racing Olys to use the Oly plan and just ride longer on the weekends. Having more time to train isn't enough of a reason to train more. Wanting to DO a HIM is perhaps enough reason.

70.3 in 2011 has always been my goal.  At first I didn't see it as a realistic one, but I do more and more daily.  Currently have 2 sprints under my belt and 1 more this weekend.  Have 2 or 3 Olys on the radar for next year.  70.3in Austin, Iron Star in Conroe, TX, or 70.3 in Miami next year would be ideal in my world.  A couple friends really want to push for a Spring/Early Summer HIM though so I was thinking about seeing if I could get ready.

Well, I am sure you COULD do a HIM in the spring if you really wanted to, but that doesn't mean you SHOULD. I like YOUR plan much better, waiting until the end of the season. I prefer it when athletes take their time moving up in distance because they are doing things in a way that is smart, safe, and prevents burnout.
I love the triathlon lifestyle, and I want to see people enjoy the sport for years. Unfortunately, many triathletes are "all or nothing" people and build up to long distance racing really quickly and then feel guilty when they can't keep up the volume and motivation, so they quit altogether.
So...do your best to follow your heart but also do your best to plan for long-term success.

mrbbrad - 2010-08-26 12:12 AM Just wanted to stop in and I say I've used this plan a couple of times and really like it. I made some slight modifications so as not to do any discipline two days in a row and created a spread sheet for scheduling (attached).

Hello all,

I've stolen and fiddled about a bit with your 3x plan so that it better suited my lifestyle. I have an oly in late March so will just tag my own extra bit on the end using the 10% rule.

Subject: This plan good for April 11/2011 Olympic race?
I was originally training for a half marathon April 30th but just notice the Virginia Tri Series schedule went up so I am going to focus for an April 11th Olympic instead. Think this plan would do me well? Done one Sprint last year, trained all summer and broke my collard bone and was out July - Mid Oct.

My schedule right now is as follows: (been at it sense 2Nov with 1 complete week off in Nov).
Swim - I am doing 2x50m, 3x200m, 2x100m,2x50m workout.  (only swimming sens 1DEC).
Bike - Currently none. I hate the cold. :-) I got a trainer ready though and can goto the gym no prob. I have tons of time. I have an easy 8-4/5 job and I can take off at lunch for an hour twice a week (swim/run days).

Mon: 45min run.
Tues: 45swim / 45 run.
Wed: 45 run.
Thur: 45swim/ 45run - intervals.
Fri: Off.
Sat: Long Run. 60 - 70 minutes which ends up being anywhere from 6.5 - 8 miles depending on my mood.
Sun: Strength Train.

Think this plan (Olympic 3x Balanced) will suit me? Maybe take a day off running and add it to the bike or swim?

Welcome to BT. Yes, I think the Oly plan will work for you. And yes, you need to start getting on the bike! I don't think you need to change out a run for a bike unless you really feel the need to add to your cycling. Especially over the winter when all the cycling is inside. Maybe if your run continues to be very strong, you can sub out a run for a bike once the weather gets nicer so you can cycle outside.

Just starting on this program this week. We'll see how it goes. Have had the goal of completing a triathlon for many years, going to buckle down and get it done this year. The goal is to build volume and do a local sprint in June, working toward the larger goal of an olympic distance in the fall.

I'm a member of other forums related to bodybuilding, just getting used to everything here. Going to start a training log if I can figure it out, lol. My cardiovascular capabilities are non-existent at this point, so this should all be pretty interesting.

Started a modified version of this plan last week. Week 1 hurt a little bit since it had been a while since I've biked or swam. Week 2 feels much better though. I have a couple half marathons scheduled February and March, sprints April and June, but the Oly isn't scheduled until September. Will see how I feel as the plan progresses on whether or not I can add other running or tri events.

No questions yet but I'm sure I will have some eventually. Any tips or advice is appreciated.

Tri Take Me Away - 2011-01-09 4:11 PM How is everyone doing? Check in and let us know if you have any questions.

I started the program about 4 weeks ago (most of the way through the 1st recovery week right now). So far it's been going well, I missed a few workouts when I went away over New Years but the time was spent at a beach being quite active and doing a bit of swimming so I didn't feel too bad about it. It's been good to have a structured plan so I don't have to think too much about what I'm going to do each day, but just consider the logistics of when/where I'm going to do the workout. I've rearranged the days so Friday is my rest day, Saturday is long run, Sunday is long ride and the long swim fits in on whichever day works best

I did have some questions about incorporating "B" races into the program. At the moment I am planning two sprint tris before the Oly - one in week 9 and one around 4 weeks out from the Oly. Neither of these is going to be anywhere near the scheduled workout time for the weekends they fall on - my last (and first) sprint was 1:09 and these weekends are both over 4 hours. Should I look at shifting the long workouts that should be on the weekend to the following week, perhaps to replace the short workout at the start of the week? Or should I just skip them?

And to add another spanner into the works, there's an awesome 33km coastal/trail run I was thinking of doing too, not attempting to "race" it but just to complete it with a few of my buddies. This falls on week 11. I actually screwed up a little and started the program a week early, so my Oly falls on week 17. I was thinking of basically stretching week 11 out to cover two weeks, with the 33km in the middle of them. I would probably only do a few short runs within these two weeks (excluding the 33km), spread the 3 bike workouts across the two weeks, but try and swim at least 5 times within the 2 weeks (swim is the only part of the Oly I'm really worried about - I did a 40km/7km brick last week). How does that sound?

There's also a couple of "C" races I'm going to throw in to the mix, just 5-10k fun-runs, OWS races etc, but these will just replace a single workout and I don't intend to alter the plan around them at all. There was a 100km cycling race I was considering but it's at the end of my peak week and seems like it probably wouldn't be a good idea.

Welcome!! We are happy to have you here on BT. Yes, going from bodybuilding to triathlon is a big adjustment. But just remember - bodybuilding will be there when you are done with triathlon, so any muscle you lose now will be easy enough to put back on again in the future.
You plan sounds very solid. I wish you the best of luck and can't wait to see how your training progresses.
