On the bike seat thing - from a female perspective I have an Athena saddle with the hole in it and love it now.
After I got it was so disappointed I was still uncomfortable but later found out it was my $200 nicks that were the problem - I rode in my tri suit and zero discomfort.
I now find the less padding I have in my shorts the more comfortable I am. I am only little (around 50kg) with no meat on my butt so I figured the more I padded it the better it would be but it turned out to be the opposite.
Take away I guess is that it is not always about the seat.

Hi everyone, interesting to hear the talk about power meters, pedals etc, cycling is so expensive compared to running and swimming!!!
I have a Garmin 310xt with a HR monitor, this is a great tool to monitor training intensity for me.

Quick question: for the swimming part of my training (target race Olympic distance 1 May), can I stick to attending my regular 1 hour squads twice a week or do I need to follow the training plan workouts?

I suppose the same goes for any group training, how do you incorporate your own training goals with a group activity?
I'm keen to do some group training for the social aspect but I like following a plan as well!

Cheers, Dave

Dave - That is beautiful.  There probably aren't many treadmills around there.  Holy cow, I want to run there today.

As for the swimming- I would stick with what is fun.  To get faster swimming you need time in the water which you are getting.  If you are still dropping that 100 time then enjoy.  When you stop making progress then you may have to start hammering those sets.

Training plans are a guide.  I follow some to the letter and others just to reference.  I like the different workouts and it gives me a good idea of the volume I should be at.  I will drop a trainer ride in a second for a slow group ride. It is about enjoying it.

I also have the 310xt.  Works great.

Hill workout last night. 10 x 2 minutes uphill. The good thing is the bridge I run on is just long enough, the bad thing, if my plan ever calls for 3 minute uphill runs I'm going to have to move.

Hey All

Sorry I haven't been on since signing up, been away visiting family over the Christmas period.  Love all the chat though!

All the visiting has meant food, wine, food, chat, food and sitting around so tomorrow the big push for 2011 starts. You are right about my injury record though Chet. When doing my marathon last year I managed to get some kind of groin injury and then only managed the long runs taking all week to recover from them.

This year I am going to take things a bit easier.

David, that photo is awesome! I would love to be able to play in a place like that. Nice work! Sadly it is deep winter here so much of my training will be indoors for the next couple of weeks. It gets dark at 1600 and the roads are icy so no biking for me. Can I make a recommendation for indoor bike training? I love this guys work. http://www.thesufferfest.com/Makes a turbo session much more enjoyable.

Have a great new year (called "Hogmanay" here in Scotland) everyone! Not too much boozing mind!

Ross

Good to hear from you Ross.  Holidays are great for everything except the diet  No pressure around here, check in when you can!

I will look at that website.  I did order a couple Spinervals for when I have the kids and can't get out but I like a little variety.

Track workout tonight followed by dinner with the family at our favorite little British pub, with music by our favorite Creole/Zydeco band, and my favorite adult beverage.  If only there was such a thing as a favorite track workout.

I've got a sprint tri 400m/15k/4k at Caloundra on 6th Feb, I'm thinking that I may do this without altering my Olympic tri plan (1 May 2011), do you think that's wise or should I train more specifically for it????
It'll be my first tri by the way...Smile

Wow, this IS an active group, which is awesome! I'm looking for a plan as well. We just got back from California, visiting family for Christmas. It rained most of the time - what's up with that? I didn't take my bike, as I didn't have room. Now I'm back in the Northwest with ice and snow on the ground. I'll hit the treadmill tomorrow, and get my bike trainer setup in the next few days. (My wife says I need to clean my bike first...don't want dirt flying on the walls.) I wondering how my calf will feel, having injured it in the fall. I will take it slow. Next week I plan on getting in the pool and seeing how my shoulders fell (yes another injury...skiing).

Anyone else live in the Northwest?

Sorry I've been quiet lately.   Here's an update of my activity:

On Dec 19 and 25, I went for runs of 65-70 minutes each.  On Dec 29 and 30, due to good weather and clear skies, my partner and I have been showshoeing together..  (2-3 hours per trip up/down a local mountain -- a good cardio workout!)   I'm hoping to get another run in tomorrow (12/31).

I still need to figure things out w/ biking. The main problem: I just moved to Canada, so I'm physically separated from my bicycles (I have 4 cheap used bikes -- 1 mountain, 1 racing, 1 touring, 1 commuter, which are all in storage in Amsterdam).  I'll be back in AMS for work in Feb/Mar and can use them then -- but I'll be back in Van in April, and it would cost me ~$200 to ship one bike back to North America.  (And my ~20-year old used racing bike is barely worth that much.) So my options are either to buy a new bike for usage in Vancouver (I've been meaning to upgrade my racing bike -- but good ones seem to cost >$700), rent one (also expensive), or find a local spinning class.   I'm still not sure what to do..   (And it's a bit frustrating to me, since I own so many bikes already!)   Opinions are welcome..

As for swimming -- I've researched it online, and there are several masters swim clubs in the Vancouver mainland area.   I need to acquire a cheap swimsuit/goggles (since my old ones are in storage in AMS), and go for some trial swims.  The only niggle: in Feb/Mar I'll be overseas..   so I'm a bit nervous about making contact w/ the clubs now.  (All of this moving around is disruptive to building up a routine!)  Opinions are welcome here as well..

As for the shoulder PT -- I still need to write down an actual routine I can perform.   Goal: research this, and make a concrete plan in the upcoming days.

So yeah..   due to life chaos (i.e. moving), I have a lot of baby steps to take to move forward.     But I guess that slow and haphazard progress is better than no progress at all!
