Northern ivy - 2011-01-14 1:15 PMSteve, any chance that we can do this Sunday?  My weekly logs tallies on sunday and I am not sure if TP will reconfigure what the week is?

I use TP too and do double entry here on BT because I like the BT graphs better. I'm not sure how many others use TP.... so let's do this:BT users send me your Sun to Sat totals and TP users send me your Mon to Sun totals and I'll post the group summary by Monday night.

-Steven

PS: Doc said I'll be fine but it may take up to 2 months to fully heal :-(

myred86 - 2011-01-14 8:04 PMSince we're now closed, what's the easiest way to find our group?  I have been finding it via the open group- I'm afraid I won't find us if there isn't a good

OspreyTriAhtlete - 2011-01-14 4:37 PMSteve and everyone else,

The last few weeks I've been running and biking.  Looking at the plans, the sprint plan will only challenge me in the swimming and the OLY I'm not sure I'll have enough time to do it.  I'm thinking of making a custom were I do more then the sprint and less then the OLY.  I'll try the sprint for a week, but I think I'm going to do the running and biking with ease.  Any thoughts?

I don't see anything wrong with that. Customize away. Just make sure you allocate more time to your weakest area.

I don't know of any rule against promoting shops here.  I go to Jason @ Halters Cycles in Monmouth Junction.  He's very knowledgeable and a great guy to know. Him and his crew maintain 6 mile run, an awesome mountain biking course in Somerset.

-Steven

Halters is awesome.  I just purchased a new road bike from them, they let me ride just about everything in the store and then Jason put in over an hour on the initial fitting prior to ordering my new bike.  I should have it by next week.

I went with comfort and opted for a Giant Defy Advanced 3.  Coming from a Mountain Bike, I needed something that sat me more upright.  I figure a few years and a few refittings and I should be getting more aero.   At this point I figure that the best bike is the one I can comfortably put the most miles on.

Grant, the defy is a awesome bike!  When I bought my cross bike I rode the Giant TCX and liked it alot.  It turned out that the Cannondale Super X ended up fitting just a tad bit better.  I have been riding the Super X on the road with carbon wheels for about 1100 miles and it does a great job on the road; and I love the fact that I can put knobbier tires on it and take it through 6 mile.

The first B+ ride that I showed up for with the princeton freewheelers I did get a bunch of odd looks.  Most people were confused by the carbon wheels and the cantilever brakes.

But now that I have my race schedule nailed down I had to choose between a true road bike and or a TT bike.  And I felt that to get into a true areo position I need to get down to about 185# until then I will ride the super six (when it gets here) with a TT seat and positioning.

Let me know if you ever want to ride; weather permitting try to do 25-40 miles a day.  Man do I hate winter!!!

Subject: Winter Training Blues!!!
Ok I have to just get this out there!!!  I am really starting to despise this whole in door training thing!  On of the things that I did not realize until just certainly that the part of training that I enjoyed was being outside; seeing new places and finding out where the pain train was going to take me on any given day.

But now it seems that there are endless hours of running on the treadmill (yuck) and endless hours on my recumbent bike (double yuck).  I am headed to total immersion swim camp at the end of the month and I am so looking forward to adding a new element to the program as I am not sure I can do this indoor thing much longer!

Sunday is always my LSR day and there is no way that I can do it on the treadmill!  I am going to put on some of my cold weather gear and go and find a trail that is relatively packed down and run outside!  Maybe the canal path, maybe the boardwalk in asbury park but it will be 10k outside!!!

Thanks for letting me vent as this has been a miserable week!!!

I share your pain.  I have a membership at Princeton Wellness and Fitness, it's a great gym, but I still hate being indoors.  An hour on a treadmill or stationary bike is like a punishment.   Getting outdoors is awesome.  Be careful running on the tow path.  My wife and I clocked in 10k in about 7 inches of snow.  It was nice being outside, but the terrain was horrible.  I wound up with some large blisters from slipping and sliding all over the snow.  I actually finished the last half mile barefoot.

I try to stick to side roads where possible and run outside as much as possible.  It sounds like you live close by.  I have unlocked my runkeeper, you can check out the maps and get some ideas of fairly safe places to ride/run.   I made one mistake recently, I biked to and from work the day before this last snow came.  I tried riding the towpath and fell on ice.  I had to go up Canal Rd. to Laurel Rd to Academy Rd during rush hour both ways.   I almost got hit and won't be doing that ride again until the snow clears.

Subject: Running Socks?
Hey Steve,
Thanks for squeezing me in. It was about 1am over here when I wrote. I almost went to bed and was going to write in again the next morning. Seems like I was lucky I got in asap. Cheers,

Bondi Beach is awesome but unfortunately I live on the opposite side of the city....north shore but there are still plenty of beaches, parks etc. to work on my run. Did a new 10km on friday...nearly killed me (pyschologically more than physically) but found a new jogging hazard....water dragons. Big fierce looking lizards but are really quite shy. I must have just missed treading on about 15 of them while running through the bush. Makes me jump 10 ft everytime they started running away.

On running, does anyone where any particular running socks? I saw somewhere online an ad for tri-socks or something similar. Do they help?

Cheers,
Troy

Yamato,

I feel horribly for you.  You are obviously under a tremendous handicap that we in the States don't have to face when it comes to training successfully.  Vic Bitter is far too much of a temptation.  I would never be able to stay off the beer if VB was accessible on a regular basis.

Hi All!

Steven - hope you start feeling better soon. Never thought tri bikes could be so treacherous

Eddie video is hilarious. What a low-cost high-efficiency solution for a high-intensity training session. How many hyphenated words did I use? Smile

I do not have much training to report on this week, but I am sure next week will be better.

I did go to a crossfit class earlier today and it was really good.

I use these and I love them:

The double layer has helped me with the battle against blisters.  They're not totally gone, but much better then before.  Using body glide on my feet has helped too.

Pretty weak week for me!  My heel spur/PF drove that- couldn't swim Friday 'cause the foot doc has it wrapped and at least 3 weeks with no running.  That completes my excuses- here's the results!

Swim  4,000 yards  1 hour 50 minutes
Bike 44 miles  2 hours 33 minutes (all on the trainer)
Run - big goose egg!

Not a great week for me. I have put in some good core training this week and some strength training, but never got to the pool. That may seem trivial to most of you,but I work in the commercial swimming pool industry. I see a pool every single day. Most days I see more than one indoor, barely used, available swimming pool! It's boarderline pathetic.

Running            3hrs 25 min          22.25 miles
Bike                  40 min                      12 miles

I would like to double my training time next week.

This week was a bust for me.
no swimming, no biking and no running. 1 day of snowboarding is all that I made time for but it was a great workout! I have been dealing with injured achilles tendons so I figured a week off may help out a bit.

Here's what I have for this week.  The numbers are low for this week.  This week will be my starting week 1.  I've decided to at least take the sprinters and OLY swim focused 20 week training plans and split the difference, ie.  for runninig today (Sunday) the Sprinters was 20 mins and the OLY was 40 mins.  I will try to do the OLY plan.

My weeks totals...

 DistanceTime
(in Mins)
Bike (MTB)8.62 miles 70
Run (includes 5 min warmup and cool down)2.77 miles 45
Swim500 yds 65
OtherBasketBall 120
 Upper Body Lifting60

Based on my attempt at swimming, I did not drown, but I tried to do!!!!  I need to get some help, especially with my breathing and stroke technique.   I've contacted one of the local Masters swim teams.  I also think I got an ear infection, so I will need to visit the doctor.

Hope everyone had a good weekend!!!!

Mike
