Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() had a great swim workout this morning getting some form drills in and a race test for this weekend. Tweeked my ankle yesterday a bit but it should be good by the weekend. Also we had our final track meet yesterday and I had all my grades win their division, it was the first time in the meet that all grades both boys and girls where won by the same school. We also set 4 new track records. It was a good day. I will miss all the kids. Keep up the training races are coming up fast. Who all is racing this weekend and do you have a goal for your race?

New user ![]() | ![]() Sorry I've been out of touch. Had a great Kayaking trip this weekend and now know that that part of my tri should be an easy one for me. Had to lay off the running for a few days because of shin splits. I was being silly and still making myself try to run but it only hurt that much more. I've purchased some wraps and will try those next time I can get out (rain here is bad). Glad to read up on how everyone is doing. It gives me motivation to keep going. 15 weeks to go. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone! Was feeling lazy after taking Monday off, but definitely getting back into the swing of things at this point. Last night was some laps in the pool and a short treadmill run, and so far today, I've been on the trainer and out on another short run. Planning on hitting the pool for a bit after work too, so today will be a trifecta! Mitch - It was HOT on Monday! I felt so awful for all of the marathoners. Congratulations on your new bike purchase. I couldn't open your link, but I'm sure it's great. Nice that you got all of those accessories thrown in. Hope it works out for you! Heather - Congratulations to you too on your new bike. Have you gotten a chance to take it out for a spin yet? Hope your hamstring is feeling better. I've been dealing with a chronic hamstring issue for about two years at this point, and it's definitely not fun... Beth - I'll bet that you PR at your upcoming half. You've been working hard the past few months! Eddie - A base of 10M isn't bad for the run, so don't get too worried yet. Worst case, you'll have to walk a bit. I had to at my second HIM due to it being 90 degrees. It happens, although I understand that it's not preferable. Also, thanks for posting about the tri frame. I'm not in the market for one, but hopefully you'll find someone who is. Will - No, I definitely did not get out to Walden. I'm a total cold wuss! Depending on the temperature, I probably won't get out until May or maybe even June. Megan just posted that she was there yesterday and it's 56. If you can handle that, let me know how it goes! Ken - Regardless of the speed, I'll take a swim that feels good anyday! Dave - That's awesome about the track meet, congratulations to you and the kids! I wish I had a race this weekend, but my first local race isn't until May 13. As you can see in my post to Will, the water temperatures here are still quite chilly! As for goals when it does roll around, I have a few for this one. It's a sprint, and was the first ever tri I did last year. Then, I placed 21/27 in my AG with a 21 minute 1/4M swim (yes, you read that right!), so first, I'd like to kill that swim time, then I'd like to see how high I can place. I actually placed 3rd in my AG in a race last fall that covered the same course, but I'm not sure I can get a podium now since I won't be in peak shape yet... Shannon - Welcome back, although no need to post all the time, especially if you're busy. Sorry you're dealing with shin splints, I hope they heal up quickly! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Took today off from training. Feeling run down and so tired it took all my energy just to go food shopping. So I figured that was my body's way of saying that I needed a break. After a few hours of rest I'm starting to feel better. Plan on returning to training tomorrow with renewed energy. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just registered for Xterra Stoaked in August. Of all of the races I am planning this year (including last month's PR in the Half Mary), this is the one I am most excited about. Now, I just have to get out there and work on my mountain biking skills. Cannot wait. Will |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This week I've taken it easy not sure what my muscle was going to feel like (it's actually an adductor, I first thought it was a hami, but after talking with my sister who is a Physical Therapist, sounds like an adductor) It has only been a minor twinge or nothing at all, but I figured I'd take it easy just to be sure I don't aggravate it and end up out longer as this was an aggravated muscle about a year ago, too, so it has a history. Wednesday I swam warm up, 1000 meters, warm down and it didn't seem to bother it, not surprised as i figured swimming would be the least bothersome. I took yesterday off and then today I rode easy on a stationary bike for about 9 miles and then swam a few intervals. It seems ok, still just a twinge. I may try to ride this weekend a little as I'm dying t get out on my new bike! I'll give running a shot next week, that will have been a week off from any running.

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My week of training has not been much to speak of, but at least got some workouts in. Just been feeling tired all week.I am two weeks away from my HIM. I went to the pool today and swam 30 minutes straight. don't know how many laps or speed or distance, just know it was reassuring to get the time in and get out of the pool feeling like I can jump on to the next half of the day. Hoping to get a long run on Sunday. (10 or 12 miles) and see how next week goes. Hope everyone has a good week. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Its been a frustrating two days of trying to run- on Friday I went for a 5 mi run during lunch, at what should have been a 8:30 or so pace, but ended up being alot slower. It was a little warm, and I was having trouble breathing so I dropped the pace. This morning I got up early to get a more intense 6 mi run workout in, only to have to slow to a walk at mile 2.5. Same problem- having lots of trouble breathing. As I was walking a for a few minutes, I began to notice all of the pollen on the ground. I checked out the pollen.com (who knew such a thing existed) and saw that yesterday and today have two of the highest pollen counts that Boston has seen this season. And since, I have terrible allergies anyway, I was feeling the effects. So, for the next few weeks I will have to be smart about getting in my runs- pick days with lower pollen counts, and maybe move inside to the treadmill on the worst days. On the plus side, I had a great call with my coach on Thursday. The main reason that I use a coach is to help make sure I get the most out of my limited available training time. And with my second child on the way in October (hey- I just made my BT announcement) I am a little afraid of what will happen to my time. Still, it was good to get re-assurance and some early ideas of things we can try. Of course, the topic of nutrition eventually came up and that just because I am at a good weight, doesn't mean I have a good diet. So I have a new goal- better nutrition. To start- I am going to improve my lunches- less greasy sandwiches and fries and more salads, whole grains and maybe some actual fruit. Hope everyone has a great weekend! Will

![]() Well, we all seem to be nursing twinges this week... my knees are acting up- went for a 15 mile bike and my coach told me to skip the run afterwards- go home and ice. I will swim tomorrow and see how it feel next week- go to save the knees for next Sundays's tri. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone, it's been a great couple of days of training! Yesterday morning I decided I wanted to push my run a bit and it felt great. Meanwhile, our weekend rainstorm got pushed out a day, and today was gorgeous. Went on a 35M ride and couldn't have been happier. Tomorrow it's off for morning swim analysis with my coach, then a 50 minute run. Eddie - I'm confident your race will go well, you've been putting in the work for the bike and run, and it's good to hear that your swim the other day felt good. Beth - Rest days are just as important sometimes, hope it paid off and you're feeling stronger now! Will - That's awesome news about the soon to be newest member of your family, congratulations! As for your allergy issues, hopefully the rain tomorrow will help wash away a lot of that pollen and clear things up in that department. Good luck cleaning up your diet too. That's a big issues for me too. I eat really healthy half the time, but the other half could definitely use some work... Heather - Glad to hear your muscle twinge appears to be letting up. Hopefully you'll be back to normal soon! Roxanne - Hope your knees feel better with some rest. We are quite the injured bunch lately, aren't we? Hope you're all enjoying your weekends! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got a nice 1550 yds straight swim in this morning, so I feel like I am on track for the July and August Olys. Plus a nice trainer ride this afternoon while it was raining. Looking forward to this week.
A question- has anyone here done any races with ocean swims. On of the races I am considering for late August (Rev3 Maine) has an ocean swim- at triangle pattern I believe, and for some reason I am a little freaked out by swimming out a couple of hundred yards. There is no chance of being swept to see, right? Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Eddie, Two weeks out before my HIM I was completely exhausted. Make sure you get a good taper in and your body will bounce back and be ready to race. You can smash this race just trust your training.

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone! I had an interesting training day yesterday. I had to meet with my coach and his other clients for swim analysis at a local pool. There were about 12 of us, and as the swim analysis was being done individually, everyone else was supposed to workout in the rest of the pool. It didn't have the lane ropes down, so we all broke off and were circle swimming in different sections of the pool. I guess we weren't all following the same outline initially, and another woman and I crashed into each other headlong! I think she just bashed the top of her head, but I got it in the face, so I have some attractive bruising on my nose bridge and under my left eye. Luckily, I seem to be able to cover it with makeup, so I didn't have to show up at work looking like I'd been punched in the face! Will - I haven't done a race with an ocean swim, but I'd imagine they're quite attuned to the water conditions, and wouldn't let you swim if there was a serious risk of riptides. I'm also sure they'd have a lot of volunteers in the water to help out anyone who was having issues, so I say go for it! I'd actually be signing up for that race myself if it wasn't so close to my IM... Dave - Read your race report, and it sounds like things went well, congratulations! Eddie - Glad to hear your 12M run went better than expected. Now you should feel really confident going into your taper that you'll be able to crush your upcoming race. Enjoy the break! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello guys, Sarah, all I can say is Ouch! Hope you heal soon. At least you could cover it up with make-up. After the crash in January, there is nothing I could do to cover my face Today I started the taper for my St. Anthony's this Sunday. I went to the pool for a swim and decided to practice my pacing. i have been getting better and better at keeping at steady pace and today I was going to focus on form and try to swim at a constant pace. Here are the results, after a 400 m warm-up, I did 4x400 on 8:00. My times were 7:01, 7:00, 6:59, and 7:02. I couldn't believe how close these were! Also, the fact that I could swim at an easy effort at 1:45 per 100 meters made me decide to take the swim easy on Sunday. I know I have an advantage in this part of the race, but I figured that if I swim much harder than this, I am only going to gain 1:30 to 2:00 in the 1500 m. It seems like it's not worth it and that I'll be better off saving energy for the bike and run. Let me know what you guys think of this strategy. Thanks, Sebastian |

Hi Will, I wouldn't necessarily say ocean, but the races I have done around here are all in the Gulf. I have swam quite a bit when I was a teenager in the ocean and it's pretty similar to the Gulf. I think you should be fine with swimming out a couple of hundred yards, just sight frequently to make sure you are on course. And remember, there will be volunteers on kayaks that will point you in the right direction if you veer off course. So don't worry, you'll be fine. Sebastian |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Sebastian and Sarah- ya'll are of course right. I know. Still, its the fear of the unknown. But I am going to pull the trigger on Rev3 anyways and work through it. I am planning on lots of OWS this spring/summer to get used to it again. Sarah- thanks for the well wishes, the wife and I are nervous as can be, but excited too. Sorry to hear about your eye, sounds like it hurt. Got an hour in on the trainer tonight. Looks like some swim drills tomorrow and a short run. I've had some tightness in my right hamstring the last day or so (it was acting up during my bike tonight), so I am hoping in starightens itself out. I'm gonna use some ice this evening and go to bed early for plenty of rest. Have a great week everyone. Will |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Started my taper for my half marathon today. I realized that I may have a bit of a problem with that though. How do I taper for a half marathon in six days but also keep up my fitness for an Oly tri in four weeks and a HIM in fifteen weeks? I ended up doing a small brick, 30 minutes on the trainer of intervals followed by a two mile run at an easy 10 min mile. Yeserday and today my throat has been progressively getting more sore and I know from experience that trying to swim like this will make me feel like I'm breathing fire when I get close to the chlorine. So I've decided that I will take tomorrow off and maybe Wed as well. I will be walking and doing some light weights to keep my body limber and active. Hope I don't loose to much fitness. Sarah- Ouch! That sounds painful but I'm glad you wern't seriously hurt. Hope you get to feeling better soon. Beth |

I have two weeks to my HIM. so I am planning on maintaining the same workout schedule, just decrease the intensity and duration. Not sure if that is the right approach. |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() Beth and Sarah - I hope you are both feeling better soon Will - congratulations Sebastian - I wouldnt try to loose time on the swimming just to have nothing left for the rest of the tri I decided to push myself today. I did 4+ miles walking and 5.25 miles on the stationary bike! My workouts have been so light and my healthy time is limited so i've decided to make the most of it. I have decided to make my 5k goal 25 min instead of 20. I think its more reasonable. Who knows maybe I'll suprise myself |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() The bike I bought a few weeks ago is in the shop getting a tune up and should be done Thursday. I'm excited to say the least to finally get out there for the season given the warm weather thus far here in New England. Until now I've been doing limited tri specific training and have been focusing on strength training in a bootcamp style gym and spinning once per week couple with a 5K every few weeks. On a side note I set a PR in last Friday's 5K--20 secs off my previous PR. Now that the weather is changing for the better the spinning will be replaced with cycling at least once per week. Best advantage I have is being able to train right at the course I will be running this summer. A bike group tackles the same route as the Timberman here in NH, so once that starts up I will be able to learn the nuances of the route. I'm not going for a record in August...just trying to finish! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Eddie- if your HIM is in two weeks the time to taper is now. What I would suggest is to keep your frequency but reduce your intensity for the first week. On the second week reduce yourself to two to three light workouts with at least two days of rest before race day. You need to give your muscles time to rest and recover from training. You also have to give your body time to store up energy. Also push the water, your body will store it in your muscles and have it readly available when you need it when racing. On another note last night my health steadily went south. Now I just feel awful and I've got to work tonight. I'm Ok as long as I done get off the couch. As soon as I try to get up and move around my stomach flips itself into a massive knot. I hope that I can recover in time for my half marathon. The only good thing is that I'm in taper mode so missing a few workouts is not a big deal. Beth |
