Yeah - but those look like sweet potato fries, so it must be better for you!

Sadly, I have been diagnosed with pnemonia - so I'm completely on the couch until this resolves itself. This week was supposed to be week two of my training plan...I can't start up back at week one once recovered (I won't be ready in time for the race) - what would be the best approach to not completely derail my plan? (as a refresher - I am running a full marathon at the end of May, this would be week two of the intermediate marathon plan from BT, I can definitely complete all of the mileage right now required by the plan if I could breathe without hawking up a lung).

Hope everyone else is staying healthy!

Hi everyone!
I know I'm late but I hope I can join this mentor group, it looks friendly!
This is actually the first time that I am part of a mentor group. I have been lurking for a few months on BT without posting much but now it seems a good time to start.

NAME: Isabella

STORY: I am living in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. 38 years old, married for 17 years, 2 great kiddos age 9 (Laurianne) and 7 (Philippe). Used to be on the track and field team (sprinting) and in a runner club in high school, but that's it for my sports background, althought I've always been active. I picked up running in 2009 (still slow as heck and am definately not a naturally gifted runner, but I love it). I picked up biking again in 2012 and I bought my first road bike (affectively named Scott) in August 2012. I feel that bike is my strong leg. With that and the fact that I also love to be in the water, the next step was obvious!

I started tri training in March 2013 with a random plan I found online. I had 2 sprint tris in mind for 2013. I ended up doing only 1, the story of my first DNS might be told later... The one I did I enjoyed very much and finished somewhat BOP but with a smile.

CURRENT TRAINING
I took time off since Dec. 12th and was sick with the flu over the holidays. I have actually never been that sick in my entire life... I resumed training yesterday with an easy bike ride. I don't follow a training plan but am looking for a good one to 1) build base and 2) prep for my oly. Suggestions? I have between 4-6 hours a week to train.

THIS YEAR'S RACES
I'd like to do a sprint in June, an oly in august and maybe another local sprint in september. I would also like to attempt a HM in september or october.

WEIGHTLOSS
I actually lost weigh during the holidays, can you believe that? Am at my ideal/racing weight now so weigtloss is not my goal.

One of my other passions in life is to cook, so am looking forward to see / share ideas for good fueling ideas. I am a snacker, so I have to monitor that, and hormones tend to create cravings for salty and sweet...

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE
I am passionate about this sport, and feel I have so much to learn! I do believe it is as much mental than physical, and a great support system is a must to succeed. My family is more than supportive but I would love to exchange with other BT'ers and see what you all do to reach your goals.

Looking forward to follow you all!

Pam, thank you for asking! Yes my wife had her surgery this past Thursday, everything went great! The biggest concern for this surgery is they can nick a facial nerve causing facial palsy or vertigo or other less than desirable conditions! She made it through all that unscathed! She is still very sore, because they drill a hole in each side of her skull, but she is actually driving today so that is a very good sign! She will continue to heal and rest for the next 4 weeks, then she will return for the second part which will be installing and turning on her receivers! At that time we should get an idea of how long it will take to restore her hearing. Some people's hear goes right back to normal, while others may take months of rehab. Fingers are crossed, but so far all is going perfectly!!!

On the serious side of healthy eating I bought a Nutribullet for Christmas. I was a little excited and skeptical too. But wow! That thing can make a great shake out of some healthy green, red, or other combinations of veggies, fruits or nuts. They are packed with anitoxidants, protein and whatever else you want.

Carl, I'm so sorry for calling you the wrong name!!!! Sometimes I don't know where my brain is. Recover my friend.

Oh Carol, I don't know whether to laugh or cry about that pic. A jelly filled donut bun? What.... Reminds me of something that flipped me out several years ago. Paula Dean was in a cookout with another family. Paula was taking everything and putting more butter on it or frying it or putting more cheese on it. Now I love butter, fried foods, and cheese (I really, really love cheese!) but it just became a farce for me and I realized that is what many Americans do - if this tastes good and this tastes good and this tastes good, let's slap it all together, fry it, and eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I really think that episode is a major milestone for me because since then I tried to cook simplier and cleaner. So, you planning on going to that restaurant?

Jennifer, so so so sorry about the pneumonia!!!! I know that Steve will get you back on track. My advice would be recover first and then start out slowly. After a week or two, look at where you were before the sickness, where you are, where your plan says to go, and then see if you can build safely with no more than 10% increase per week. I would think that you would need to lay off of speedwork because your energy is going to be spent on getting the workout done. I think you can do it; expectations may (or may not) have to be adjusted depending upon recovery. But def listen to Steve.

Welcome Isabella! Ugh, I hate the flu. I had it one time and felt like I had to get better to die.

Jim, great news on your wife!!!!! Please keep us informed.

Anyone seen the show "Cook Your Off". Very interesting. Two of their episodes touched on something that led me into the kitchen to experiment. Basically I'm making a "salsa" with chopped avocados, tomatoes, jalepenos, roasted corn, roasted celery, roasted peppers, and anything else I think will go good. Lemon juice and balsamic vinegar and salt. My first batch was awesome, second was ok, and I just made my third batch. Onions would be good but I can't handle onions. Roasting really changes the flavors of some things.

BTW, the one plank I did yesterday.....OMG, I'm sore today. Last year I was trying to do at least 1 plank every day (if I missed a day or two, I had to double up until caught up). I haven't planked for 6 weeks and then one plank can cause that much soreness? Me thinks those things work.

Welcome to Isabella, Linda, and anyone else I may have missed!

Wow, the flu this year has really taken a toll! My best advice, get totally well first...then ease back in slowly. Races are great motivators, but we do this stuff for our health, right?

Linda, I have a NutriBullet as well. Never been a fan of "as seen on TV" stuff, but it really is a good product, and hard to even taste the greens.

Glad everyone is "enjoying" the burger of the month!

Still swimming 3X / week, and spending my other exercise time walking and working on the plantar fasciitis with the stretches and roller. Overall I'd say it's doing better, but I'm not going to even attempt to run until I can walk without a limp most of the day. Have had too much experience with one problem throwing everything off and creating another one.

Pam, your Mary is fast approaching. How you feeling?

Carol, Carol, Carol - that pic made me laugh. Someone is gonna eat that...yikes.

Mitzi - welcome back! We are on the same path - lose the bad stuff gain more of the good stuff. We are all on a chocolate challenge if you want to join in. No chocolate until February 7th.

Jay - welcome back!

Mike - it's so good to hear the spring in your step, er voice. Cheers to your year of success and no injuries!

Strykergt - I did a HIM before IM and I'm so thankful I did. The jump from Olympic to HIM is a pretty big deal so it's nice to make a big jump and not a gigantic jump.

Jennifer - lame duck sauce! Sleep as much as you possibly can.

Isabella - I have a good friend who lives in Quebec! WElcome to our, yes very friendly, group!

Jim - sounds like you're wife is making excellent strides forward, and how I hope she hears immediately!

Pam - if only we could gain as quickly as we lose. Forgive my kitchen ignorance, but how would I roast vegetables? In the oven on a cookie sheet with some oil?

I'm feeling really good about things right now. Today concludes day 8 without chocolate and I've made a very interesting discovery. I love chocolate so so so much that since I stopped eating eat I don't really eat sweets - I mean, none. Yesterday I was craving chocolate so much I decided to buy a bag of black licorice to hopefully curb the craving, but that is the only 'junk food' I've had. I just didn't know how much chocolate is what I really love more than just sweets. I've been getting in a run or bike every day along with some strength training. I feel so good. Now I just need to start actually making a training plan that will get me to my race goals. My wrist is getting more and more ROM and I expect I'll be recovered in just a few more weeks, which means I can swim again. The route 66 challenge started yesterday and I was in 9th place out of about 70 people.

Night!

Go Samantha on Route 66! The cooking shows always show roasting as putting things on the flames of a gas oven or grill. My definition of roasting may not be true roasting but I get a skillet hot (usually with olive oil) and then toss in the veggies. Stir some to keep from burning but I usually like a char on them - not too much but some.

Carol, as for the mary, I feel good, I feel bad. I feel underprepped but well rested. My shakeout runs this week have felt great to get out there and then I get tired or winded just a few miles in. Think it's all in my head. I'm hoping the fresh legs will carry me far. I have noticed that even tho I'm trying to do my runs slow and easy, they seem to be a faster speed than normal. We'll see. Weather is supposed to be sunny tho so that is good. Temp change will prob go from the 30s to 60s during the day which is hard for me to plan what to wear. Life is so much easier when it's just shorts, a sports bra, and maybe a shirt. Cold temps also affect my knee that I broke years ago but I've found that the pain/discomfort that I feel for the first few miles isn't anything that will affect the run - but I have to keep reminding myself of that. But I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for asking. I'll try to post asap afterwards. If I don't crash and have a decent race, I'll be waiting for Mel for a hour or two and I'll try to post from my phone while I'm standing in line for a massage.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Yes, I waited to be well enough to start training again, but I was worried that 1 complete month without doing anything than go from the bed to another place in the house where I could lie down would take its toll. But the easy bike went well, time to go for a run tonight!

In Quebec we have temps ranging from 20 to -40 F between December and April pretty much. It makes training a bit more difficult but I'm trying to go for a run whenever the roads are ok, rest of the time, it's bike in the basement. I should probably use this time to go more to the pool...

Pink: that salsa looks delicious. I would maybe add fresh cilantro (I put this stuff on everything!)

Jim: we feel the love and support you have for your wife... my best to both of you!

Hello to everyone, I am dealing with my first saddle sore so let me ask anyone who has experience what is the best way to handle this. I rode this morning but will not tomorrow I also held off on my run as its in a very inconvenient spot. I know it needs to heal as they can get worse quickly and then your out a lot of time.

Samantha - you are so disciplined!

Jim, I tend to read through posts quickly and missed about your wife's surgery. Glad it went well, hope recovery is complete!

Eating hasn't been great, but as usual after being really hungry and eating out of control yesterday I lost a # , even eating handfuls of corn chips. This is after being good for a week and scale not budging. I know the issue is change over the long run but I really do seem to lose after days of overeating and gain after days of working out hard - it's just discouraging.

Haven't had candy, but have eaten chocolate Zone bars - that probably doesn't count as it's still feeding that chocolate craving. Have noticed my craving for whole grain breads and butter has been hard to fight.

Did a spin class the other night - hated it. Lots of silly arm moves, rapid shifting of upper body and moving up and down. Read here on BT that those spin classes are not to be counted as biking, but chalk it up to an hour of cardio. Might ask if there is a class that is more cycling focused.

Hope everyone is having a great day.

Mitzi

Isabella, yes, I forgot about the cilantro in the salsa! And a touch of red pepper. Did I say pepper too? Can’t remember. And maybe cumin.

I plugged in the temps for the mary and I’ll do shorts. Temps will be about 41 at start but will be in the 60s by the time I finish. I know I’m a wimp but 40s are cold for me. Normally I have found that 51 is my “coldest to wear shorts to run” temp. {Ok, I know that many of you are laughing at me for debating on wearing shorts in 40s but then I’ll laugh at you later if you complain about temps in the 80s.} I’ll also wear a short sleeve shirt but I may wear my arm warmers (or the tube socks on the arm option).

Probably won't be checking back in til Sunday. Hope everyone has a great week and a wonderful weekend!

Pam, thanks for putting that list together. No wonder I was having trouble keeping everyone straight...there are a bunch of us ! And just in case you get a chance to check in, GOOOOOOOO PAM !!!!!!!! Hope you have a wonderful race experience.

Funny Pam should mention the clothing conundrum. I bought a Mickey Mouse hoodie the day before a race a few years ago. Paid $1 for it at a garage sale and decided that would be my throw-a-way shirt. Turns out it's one of my favorite warm shirts, so I have yet to wear it to a race.

Mitzi, sounds like you are doing great on the workouts! I think the spin classes are all about the instructor so don't give up. Seems that some are into all the up/down stuff, some lead more of a simulated cycling workout, and well...some are just into themselves.

Carl, how is the recovery going?

Isabella, yikes, that is some serious cold weather! Even though it usually feels good, so hard to get out the door to the pool when it's cold outside.

Jay, glad to see you back! You add a great perspective to this group, and I look forward to seeing your year unfold.

Jennifer, how are you feeling?

Mike, I think some of the others here have some experience with saddle sores, so I'm sure you will get some good feedback. All I can do is say ouch!

Steve, thinking you are traveling again....to warmer climates. Hope you are enjoying and maybe finding some real pools to swim in.

Wound up running a little bit chasing a neighbor's escaped lab night before last. Foot felt pretty good, so I tried mixing in some very short sections of running on my walk yesterday. Foot not happy afterwards and this morning, but tolerable. Swim on tap for today, so that will give it some rest + stretch and roll.

Hello all!

Wow we are a big group! Looking forward to see how everyone is doing.

Went for a short 2 mile run last night, had to kick myself in the butt but it turned out to be very enjoyable (and a nice 24F too!) The goal was to assess my running after a 1-month hiatus. From Sept. till December I was on a running focus (my weakest sport) to improve and build a nice base, ran 4-5 times a week with short and long runs mixed with some intervals. I improved A LOT during that time, endurance-wise and speed-wise. Had to stop mid-december for busy work and then sickness.

Yesterday I felt I was back to square 1. Hard to keep HR in Z2 and legs were shaking a bit after only 2 miles???
Did I really lose all the fitness I gained last fall?

Anyhow I am prepared to do the work to get my running up to par again. Any advice is welcomed.

Newbie question: do you all upload your workouts to the BT log? I usually do once in a while but usually I keep everything in Garmin Connect. Is it required as part of a mentor group?

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!

Thank you everyone for the well wishes!! She's doing great, now able to drive around and also sleep in a real bed again! She saw her surgeon yesterday and he said she is doing great! She will return in 2 weeks for another check up, then on the 10th they will put on her external devices and turn them on! YAY!! Been a crazy crazy road, but it seems we may be on the back side of this!

My training is going very well, Mitch and I are supposed to get together for a long ride Sunday!! I hope everyone's training is going great, there are a lot new friends on here, I will get caught up with everyone this weekend!

Happy Training

Yeah, well....OK. Cowboys were done before they started this year.

Isabella, I'm trying to convince myself that starting over on the run will be fun. I guess if we all progressed in a linear fashion we would have to run longer and longer and faster and faster to the point where there was no time for anything else and it would be boring. OK, that's pretty lame reasoning, but I gotta hang onto something . I'd suggest logging your workouts here because it will enable Steve and others to give you more constructive feedback. I upload my Garmin to BT for bikes and runs (once I get back to doing them), but some people prefer to just put in time and distance and let it go at that.

Another decent swim today. So thankful to have such a nice pool only a couple miles from home that is FREE at lunchtime. Question: Do any of you get phlem in the back of your throat when swimming. Towards the end of my swims, I actually get choked up...and it's not from water. Maybe from breathing in the chlorine for a while?? Wonder if it would help to add some lemon juice to a water bottle and take a sip now and then? Sorry to be gross, but no better place than here to ask such a question!

MTA: Happy trails/roads to Jim and Mitch on your ride this weekend!

Hope everyone is enjoying some good training. I did the snow shovel shuffle this morning. Nothing big and then had some fun making a snowman. The long bike yesterday left me a bit sore but getting around OK today. Trying to keep in mind it is still early and base building is still in effect.

Isabella - Logging is not required but is easy and makes it easy for us all to see how we are all progressing. Steve has great insight and it makes it easier for him to give you that feedback whenever you ask.

Carol - Starting the build over is never fun, just part of the journey. Picture the sun coming up over the Texas hills after a nice cool evening rain and maybe that will make it go a bit easier.

Mike - You make it all sound so routine and easy. What is on your schedule. You were really hammering it last year.

I am looking at getting a charity spot with STOMP the Monster at 70.3 Princeton. Sent the email the other day with no response yet. Other wise I will look at Bassman 1/2 May 4 but this crunches the schedule.

Joe - seems routine as it is routine, I guess . with my current HIM plan, every week is essentially the same schedule every day, just that the time/content of the workouts may vary week to week (get longer mostly!) My schedule every week is : M - swim Tu/AM run, PM bike W: swim Th: Bike/run brick, F: Run (later on this becomes AM Bike, PM run) Sat: long bike, sun Long Run.

It was an inspirational day just seeing post after post on FB of all the runners who dedicated thier miles to her today. Stay safe everyone and hug your loved ones. Have a great weekend!
