OK, let's see if this works. This should be me in my blue tri-suit at the Silverlake Tri last weekend. Gravity has not been kind over the years, and lycra accentuates this, so I usually don't save or share these photos. The beauty of blogs is feeling somewhat anonymous, though.

Mike_in_WI - 2007-05-24 9:29 AM What are your feelings on BRICK workouts? Do you do them? When should you start in relation to your race and what events do you try to incorporate? Swim Bike, Bike Run, etc...

I like bricks.  There are a few people that are opposed to bricks, not many, but a few.  I remember reading a diatribe against bricks in Jeepfleeb's blog.  I like bricks, personally.  I do them so that I know what to expect on race day.  I don't expect the "rubber legs" feeling to be reduced through bricks, but it's a good indication to me of what I will feel like on race day.  Other than that, I don't think that it provides any special benefit to me.

By the way, Lynne and Jamie, you both look great!

I'm with Drew you guys look great. However that doesn't mean I have to take a picture in my TRI suit for you guys!

As for bricks, when is the best time to integrate them into your workout? My first race is July 15th, should I do a swim bike 2 weeks before and then a bike run the week before? or do you guys think I should be doing more?

Here my work page picture now just imagine a bright orange TRI suit.

Very nice to meet you Mike!!! You look an AWFUL lot like the guy that does the evening weather here on channel 13!!!

I started doing bricks almost right away. It was mostly pool/lake to bike bricks though, now I need to suck it up and do bike to run bricks.

Everyone looks so nice. I hope we can all meet at some race in the future.

I try to mix in a brick once every week. Even if means just running for 10 minutes after a bike ride. I just do it long enough so my legs get in the running mode. I find the more I do it the easier time my body has going from bike to run. I still remember the first duathlon I ever did, I walked into transition and out of it. It took me about 10 minutes before my legs would even start a slow jog. I also found that if you do some easy spinning in the last 1/2 mile on the bike, it helps the transition to running.

They should give a prize for best looking mentoring group! You've got the coloring to look great in an orange tri suit. You'll have to send us a Mr. Incredible pic after you race in it. (I can't be the only one to break down & show a giant picture of myself in lycra!!!) Lynne, if I had your wonderful Scottish hair & eyes, I'd be going for a green or purple suit, so you should probably go ahead & sell your new tri suit to me!

I've had folks recommend a short brick every week, but I'm not that dedicated. I do try to get one in at least every 2 or 3 weeks, though. I need the practice, because I'm a bit of a whiner when I transition.

I also want to see this orange tri suit. I wore mine for the 1st time last weekend. None of my family came - husband was at work, inlaws in London, no friends - Only kidding, two of my friends showed up at the finish line which was a great surprise so I do not have any pictures of me in it! I will have to wait till the place that ran it puts pics up on their website. But please, when they do put the harpoons away. I beg of you.

Ok. The babbler is back. Here's a few questions.

My 1st tri. April 22nd 2007. Totally hooked. I signed up for another semi indoor one in May. Again, went home signed up for another end of June.

Today I signed up for one end of July. I'm already signed up for August and September.

Being a total newbie and realistically unfit, is this too much or can I do it? They are all sprints. The 1st one really being indoors was easy. Got your own lap lane in the pool, biked 9 miles on a trainer, 18 laps of a indoor track. No kicking and punching in the pool, no hills on the bike ride and likewise on the run.

I only quit smoking in January and I'll be honest with you, I've had a couple of cigarettes since then. Been a good month at least now but I feel incredibly unfit and ashamed at practically every workout I do! I sometimes catch myself thinking. WHAT AM I DOING!?

Triathlons aren't fun if you're not surprised that you survived the whole thing when it's over, right?  As long as you're not overtraining in between, and you give yourself some rest time to recover every now and then, go for it!

I agree, just have fun and do all the sprint tri's you want. As long as you get the rest you need, you'll do fine, plus you will meet all kinds of new people at the races you do. Good luck.

I couldn't agree more with what has been posted.  One sprint a month isn't going to kill you.  Rather, it's just going to make you more of an addict.  If you're anything like me, pretty soon you'll start thinking, hmm... I wonder what an olympic is like.  After that you'll start entertaining the idea of a HIM.  I kind of just choose different challenges and go after them.  That's why this summer is mountain running for me.  I have only run up a few mountains in my life.  Only one of them has been as challenging as the mountains here in Utah, so I'm excited to go after it this summer.

As far as bricks are concerned... i have never actually done a swim/bike brick.  I do bike/run bricks just so I know what it's going to be like to switch from using the cycling muscles to using the running muscles.  I imagine that the swim/bike would probably be nice though.  It's never too early to start doing them, just make sure that you don't do too many and burn your body out.

Thanks, me and wife waited about 7 years before we had our first, and then we couldn't stop. The kids are so much fun, its just hard to find time to train. Either early in the morning or late at night, plus my wife is very understanding of my IM goal.

Sorry I've been away for the last day or so, this week has been very busy for me.  I spent all yesteday turning my leased car in only to buy it - but all the services and paperwork took forever.  My best friend's sister is getting married June 2nd so I've been helping out nonstop with that.  I went and looked at some trisuits the other day, but haven't bought one yet.  I'm pretty used to looking rediculous in running gear - in high school my track team wore the butthuggers and tight tanks and it was a competition every year for the girls to find the most gaughty looking tights around- orange, lime green, fuschia, I had a pair of birght green, yellow, and blue tiedye ones, haha.  I was suppose to make it to a pool to sign up for the masters team this week, but have been too busy - next Tuesday though -definately!  I am also going to get goggles, swim cap, swim watch(eventually - once I get comfortable in the water and can do more than two laps at a time) and a trisuit!

Anyone have plans for the weekend? I'm heading to VA Beach area with my boy and his family - leaving tonight and if anyone has been over on the east coast around the DC area and know what 95 traffic is like - it will be a looooooong drive.

Oh and here are some pictures of me since we are sharing

Once again, we definitely get the award for best looking mentoring group.  This is fun!  I feel like I know everyone better already!  Drew, what are you going to grad school for?  I waited a while to have kids, too, but despite how time & cash consuming they are, I highly recommend them.  Here are mine:
