I was going about 20mph today when I fell to the left side.  I landed mainly on my hip and skidded a ways--nothing is broken, but my hip (piriformis area and glute) is very sore, I sprained my right thumb and gots lots of beautiful road rash.

After fixing my chain I biked about 3m back to my car, but that left side is sore and get tighter and the thumb is not quite as good breaking.  I took advil, a cold shower and stretched.

Am I ok to ride the race tomorrow? What can I do to speed healing?

Go to a Health Food Store and get some ARNICA 30c or 200c. they are little sugar pellets. take 5 of them 3-4 times today. The pellets dissolve under your tongue. Arnica is for muscle trauma and bruising. Go NOW. It really will help.

I don't know what to tell you about the bike race, you will have to play it by ear. I am more concerned about your thumb and breaking (that is important). Ice it today for 10 minutes on / 10 off and see if it improves.

Is all the road rash clean? Use hydrogen peroxide, betadine or bactine and keep it all clean. make sure it doesn;t dry up and you pull the skin more. guess what, NO SWIMMING until your hand is better nad your skin has healed for a couple of days! Especially in a lake filled with Staph bacteria! YUK!

Let me know how you are doing tonight.

Totally stupid maneveur, I swerved to avoid hitting a squirrel and went off the asphalt into gravel.  When I tried to course correct I was going to fast and dumped the bike.

The good news is I have the Arnica.  The bad news is everything is still sore and breaking with the thumb is an issue.

I need to make a call by 4pm so I can fill my slot with someone else.  Damn.

My runner will probably not be up for biking (good runner, bad biker) and i am not sure the hip will take it.

I talked to my team and we are going to make a call tomorrow morning.  I feel bad for the swimmer.  She has been training hard for this race (she originally was planning to do the whole thing, but was to busy with kids).  I suggested the relay concept and now look where we are.  The other two teams are ready to go so the day will not be a total loss.

Thanks for the feedback and I will keep my fingers crossed (minus the thumb!).

damn Suzy - Sorry to hear this...  - you probably already cam eot a resolutiona bout this - but FWIT - an ointement can keep the road rash supple through the race  I'd be more concerned about the thumb and braking - wish I had read this earlier - good luck and hope it works out regardless of the race - there will always be other races but there is only one you..... take care of yourself

Hola all!

No bike today due to the thumb.  Did the 5K instead and as usual hated the distance.  I PR'ed big time--22:06, but I believe the course was short, both my GPS and motionbased called it a 3m race.

Hope to be back on the bike tomorrow.

PS My husband did great in his first bike race (18mph on a very hilly course) and my good friend took my bike leg and also kicked butt, about 1 minute behind my husband.  Nice to have friends!

Hi everyone:
Sorry to hear of your accident Suzy. Way to push through anyway. Congrats. I am not doing the Xterra tomorrow. I really don't feel ready and my practice schedule got messed up because of the rain so I have been working pretty hard this week. The 5K I was supposed to run 2 weeks ago was last night and I finished slower than my 1st one. BOP all the way. A girl I thought I might finish before did run/walk/run and then passed me at the end. Should I try this or just keep straight running(I use this term loosely). But I did finish!

Cheers,
Lynn

Suzy - glad to hear it worked out ok - I'd give body parts for a 22 min 3.1 OR 3 Mile.  heal quickly!

Hey Lynn, don't worry about being slower than before even the best have off days. Run/walk works for some people. give it a try in training and see what happens to your time. There is nothing on the rule sthat says you ahve to run the whole way and for some run/walk may be faster!

i finally got a swim in - while it is my strongest leg I am humbeld by how crappy i felt and  the obvious need not to rest on my laurels and think i can coast

Keep the faith.  Everyone has an off race day -- I have had many humbling moments along the way and am sure there are more to come.  I usually step back and assess the situation -- did I start out too fast?, train too much leading up to the event? etc.  It is in those moments that you grow the most.  Corny, but true for me.

I was checking out the Wausau times today and they do not calculate tranistion times only swim, bike and run times.  MY GPS run time was 22:06, but the stated time was 23:06 does that include the transition?

Suzy, most likely the T2 is added to your run time. It depends on where the mat was placed. Congrats on your PR! How does the thumb feel?

I am going to run a 5k tomorrow. I haven't run a 5k in ages and with all the long distance training i have been doing I have no idea what to expect! My husband is telling me I can break 24 minutes....we shall see. I know I can run 8:30s for 3 miles, but I don;t know about 8:00s! ouch! Lets just say Red Bull is going to be involved in this race. LOL.

Lynn, try the run/walk combo in training. I started with it and it got me through my first marathon and I even used it in the Ironman marathon I just did. I usually run for 10 minutes and then walk a minute. That doesn;t mean lollygag for a minute, but it's not speedwalking either. You will have to find the right pace for you. I recommend you do it on your longest runs.

Don't worry about missing your Xterra race. Triathlon is about confidence and if you didn't feel ready, you made the right choice. This is about having fun, first and foremost! however, don't bail on any more races.....no mater what! pick a sprint race for your next one or a duathlon for something easier than an Xterra. (I'm impressed you would sign up for one, I am totally intimidated by them!)
Have fun!

I tried Red Bull once and not as a training aid. YUCK!  Is it the caffeine that you two like? it cannot be the taste, right ?Laughing

The only thing I train with is INFINIT custom sports drink, but that has been totally for running.  Do you think you need solids when combining SBR? Not sure my stomach could handle running with food in it off the bike.....

Good luck on the 5K Jeanne.  Let us know how you do.  Personally, I hate the distance.  Too all out for me.

Thumb hurts from yesterdays ride, but I see my PT tomorrow (for my foot) so I am going to have him take a look at it.  I am sure it is just a pulled tendon and not broken.

The taste grows on ya....

Re: solid food, I have found a 2-4 fig newtons about an hour into a 2 hour bike really made a difference for me. I use accelerade while riding.. for this next tri - i am going to hydrate more - and eat a little something in the first 2/3's of the bike to try and keep from crashing on the run as I did in my first attempt -  I'm not sure it was the heat or a fuel issue. but we'll see if it makes a difference.

At this point It's all about trying to figure out what works.... and being a newbie I have no idea..

It took me a long time to figure it out too. It really is trial and error. I can't do solid food. I was using Accelerade, for short stuff and Hammer for long stuff, but it left me a little flat. My friends tride Infinit, but can't handle the sodium in it. We have all switched to Carbo pro. That is the BOMB! Its a tasteless power you can add to anything. My friends add it to a half serving on infinit, to cut on the sodium or use e-load for the electrolytes. I still like Endurolytes by Hammer.

Dave, to me, that does not sound like enough calories for you. use the calculator that suzy posted earlier about running. there is one on Infinit web site for cycling caloric replenishment. I bet you will be surprised about how little you are taking in!

And the red bull, I use for sprint races and short stuff. the taste is icky, like melted Jolly Ranchers. But 20 minutes before a race its ok.

I second the Carb-Pro comment, but only in concert with the Endurolytes you recommended.  I think Carb-Pro is great when all other beverages start tasting really narly.

I still use Accelerade for anything under 2 hours. The Carbo Pro comes in a powder or a liquid. The liquid is thick and rich....like cough syrup. But it works. you still have to add electrolytes, but this way you can customize to what the day or workout is requiring of you.

The humidity makes my excercise induced asthma kick in. So I avoid really hard efforts and walk hills on my runs. I supposed I could go to bed earlier and workout in the mornings, but a lot of local cross country runs are being held in August and I would miss out on them.

I was swimming in a lake the other day and this cove we swam into was so funky smelling, very musty...my lungs were affected very quickly and I had to turn around and go back to the middle of the lake. My friends said they smelled it, but it didn't affect them as it did me. As soon as I got to clearer water I stopped wheezing. Got some good lugeys out of it!
