Enjoying my solitude and coffee before the family wakes up.  Not really sure where my training will take me today.  All l know for sure is I need to do some home projects.  Oh and wander over to REI for a little ultalight packing research.

wgraves7582 - 2010-03-18 5:51 AM Got my commute in today - need to get some running and swimming in over the next couple of days.  Rain and cold coming back so bike might be shelved for a couple - just have to commute more then!

Sorry Bill.  At least California still has its beautiful weather....

Ah, that sucks.  On a similar note, come to find my youngest has hand, foot, mouth.  We think he got it from our gym's childcare.  He feels fine, but need to keep him isolated.

It can get discouraging with all the sickness going around.  I hope everyone out there that is sick gets feeling better soon. Its not fun being sick and its frustrating when it throws off your training schedule.
Update on my son.  He was throwing up again this morning.  We don't know if its related to his hospital stay, something he got after (likely since we were at a family thing over the weekend and several others have come down sick) or if its the new medication (which causes nausea).  We're trying to get a hold of the doctor to see if he can hold off on the new meds until he is feeling better and then reintroduce them.
My son is discouraged, not only because he is still sick but also because he is missing a HOSA (Health Occupation Students Association) competition that he has been looking forward to all year. They are loading up the bus as I type this. This is his last chance to compete since he is a senior.

pdbman - 2010-03-15 3:52 PM Just got back from the pool. It was a little frustrating. First I forgot my towel and didn't have time to go back and get it so I choose to make due without it. I even checked my bag before I left to see what I needed, noticed I needed a towel and put everything else in that I needed except for my towel.  I had to eat my words for all those times I used to think "How could you forget your towel, swimsuit, etc?"  A few things I learned from this.
1-Be patient when people do "stupid" things. You will probably do the same thing at some point.
2-Fleece jackets, do not work work as a substitute for a towel.
3-It takes exactly two paper towels to dry my short hair.  I like having short hair.

My other frustration had to do with lane etiquette. I won't go into details but I think pools should have a jellyfish lane. I just kept telling myself "This is just practice for a tri when you're having to swim around other people and getting kicked, etc." Self talk doesn't usually work for me. I should have gone to the pool an hour earlier.
What did I learn from this?  I still need to learn patience.

Can they keep the noodles in the jellyfish lane, too?

I second the noodles...The 'fast' lane in next to the kids area.  Whenever someone abandons a noodle it drifts into my lane.  It is annoying to be swimming along and suddenly have a noodle under your arm.

Those of us in the jelly fish lane wouldn't know what that's like!

Before this experience, I thought I was the slowest at the pool.  People are always passing me and I do my best to pause at the end so they can pass there and I won't hold them up. These two were literally bobbing in the water.  They should have been in the same lane together but one jumped in to the lane that already had two people sharing when they could have had their own lane together.

We haven't had a QOTD in a while...

In regards to your major triathlon purchases (bikes, computers, HRMs, clothing, etc)....

Knowing what you do now...if you had to do it all over again...how would you have approached your purchases regarding triathlons.

I didn't answer this question because I don't really have any tri equipment.  I have a 15 yo mtn bike. I just chucked my old cyclo computer that quit working. I have a cheapo HRM because I didn't want to spend the big bucks just to have it sit there. (I'm looking at the garmin 405 or 310 now-Any suggestions, comments, etc?). I have some old baggy swim trunks that I'm using and want to get some tri shorts.

So does anyone have suggestions for someone who is really just a beginner (even though my status says otherwise) about equip to buy, what to buy first, etc?

Paul.....you need an avatar!

Yes I do. I have one in mind but don't know how to write the code for it. I was hoping for a cool moving avatar like yours.

You don't need a code...you can shrink it using paint (although I have issues getting it small enough for an avatar using that) or you can use a site like this one!

I meant I don't know how to write the programming code to create a moving avatar. I also don't have any pictures that I want to shrink down and show the world.  I'm still considering my options.

brick94513 - 2010-03-17 7:14 PM Tough day for me today.  I figured I would go for a quick 20 miles in some new terrain.  I had heard some good things about the area and thought why not.  Well, not so smart.  I broke some of my own preparation rules and I paid the price!  4 hours later, I completed the 20 miles.

Ride started good with some nice single track and mellow, descending switchbacks.  Nice to brush the cobwebs out.  Then I hit the first obstacle, about a knee deep stream running pretty well.  Decided to play it safe and walk it.  Well, don't carry your shoes and socks in your hand when crossing water.  I slipped, put my hand down, ended up with wet shoes and socks.

Due to the high water, the trail was gone.  So I ended up hiking roughly six miles along the river bed before being able to get back in ridable terrain.

Then I got to point on the map that showed a trail, but there was no trail.  I did find some flagging here and there.  So, I spent the next few miles with my gps, compass, and map.

At this point, I was pretty beat and was rewarded with three ridges to climb to get back to the ranger station.

So, my 20 mile ride, turned into a lesson in hike-a-bike, stream traverses, orienteering, and a climbathon (5,851 total ascent)!  I'm spent.

Tough trek. It would have taken me more then four hours.

wgraves7582 - 2010-03-17 2:33 AM #4 - Last night but it was a very slow leak so I did the easy thing and just pumped it up 2 x on the way home.  Off to the bike shop today to buy more tubes Yell

Ok, I don't mean to laugh at your expense but DANG!!! That's enough flats to cover a lifetime! (Like I need to tell YOU this, right?!)

No problems Michelle.  I figured out last year with my mileage and flats that it was still only 1 flat per 500-700 miles so that is not that bad.  And hopefully I don't get any during races   Sort of like falling in the winter and hopefully never hitting the Asphalt!!

I got a flat during my tri in July.  I was bombing down a hill and my front tire blew.  The whole tire was trashed.  I had to DNF.  I was really bummed out because I was doing really good.

Also had to cancel our anniversary plans since my son is still sick. Frown Don't dare leave him alone right now, especially since we still don't really know what it is.

That trek sounds like so much fun!!!!  I'm not a mountain biker, though.  I'm more of a hiker/peak bagger.
